Review
"In "Exploring Ancient Native America, author David Hurst Thomas...works hard to tell the story of ancient America "strictly in terms of places and artifacts you can see for yourself..."he seems eager to steer clear of the Eurocentric version of American history and enhances his fact-filled reports with perspectives from a host of Native American tribes...The work is scholarly but easy to read... This is not a tour book that tells you where to eat or where to stay or how to entertain yourself when you get there--unless you're one to feed on mystery, sleep with the stars and thrill to small revelations."
-"Chicago Tribune
..."a fine guide which includes a healthy dose of Native American history along with basic ideas and instructions for locating archaeological sites."
-"Midwest Book Review

To the points, all the important ones
By Marco Buendia
Good general introduction to archaeological research into Native American sites in North America (and in one chapter, including Europeans, from the Vikings to the Spaniards, focussing on how they interacted with the Americans), intended for the general reader, written in a very plain direct style. This is a history not only of the ancient Americans themselves but the history of archaeology in the US and Canada as well. Rich in good functional illustrations (maps, black and white drawings of the old school, not decorative, though there is a series of color plates). Particularly notable for concrete and practical information on sites the layperson can visit; some directory information may have dated but most of it still usable. Readers may start the book from the beginning or usefully dip into it in relation to a place they intend to visit.

Begins with a rocky first chapter that glosses over the history of the origin of man. After this it begins to get good. It was required reading for a course I took at a community college. The subsequent chapters tell a lot of active archaeology and even provides addresses to sites and museums. Both black-and-white photography and color pictures are included as well. Being from California, there is also an interesting depiction of California mission history that you just don't get from the missions themselves (except for one!).

They are probably not arrowheads.
By Old Master
After fining an arrowhead in Colorado I was curious as to its provinence. In this book I learned that what we call arrowheads are projectile points, and too heavy for a bow, even though they seem small. And it may well be over 1,000 years old. This is a wonderful tour through Native American sites and the past.
