About the Author
Ellen T. Luepker, MSW, BCD, is a licensed psychologist and clinical social worker in private practice, and an instructor in the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. She provides training to mental health professionals nationally and abroad on ethical issues and consultation to regulatory boards and attorneys regarding malpractice cases. She was honored by the National Academy of Practice as a Distinguished Practitioner, by the National Association of Social Workers as a Social Work Pioneer, and received Smith College’s Day-Garrett Award for her contributions to professional standards in mental health care.

Necessary, important, and a pleasure to read

As a psychologist in private practice, I found this book indispensable. I'm sure that would be equally true for someone in any one of the mental health professions. The thing was, I clearly needed to know more about the "paperwork" aspects of therapy practice that I hadn't learned in my graduate work. But I imagined that a book about record-keeping would be dry and dull, and of course I was more interested in reading about clinical work. Fortunately, I found Ellen Luepker's book and was pleasantly surprised that it was not dull at all. It is well organized and well-written, in an engaging, lively style that makes it very enjoyable to read. She uses lots of clinical illustrations that make all the principles understandable and stimulate clear thinking about how to apply them in your own situation.
Confidentiality is at the heart of clinical practice, and it is also at the heart of the book. It is as much a book about professional ethics as about records, and it becomes clear how these issues are intertwined.
In the latest edition, the issues brought up by the use of various electronic forms of communication are discussed with the same clarity as the earlier book. Additional areas of concern, such as closing out a practice in retirement or illness, have been added as well.
I wish I could have read this book as a text in a grad school course on professional practice. For those of us who missed that opportunity, it still adds a great deal of richly useful and important information to that which we have picked up along the way for ourselves. And for practitioners nearing retirement, it offers some of the most thoughtful advice available anywhere.

Good overall

Good resource for psychotherapist's documenting and record keeping. A bit minimalist - that is, the author doesn't give a lot of details but just gets right to the points without a lot of fluff. Gives facts and examples which is great. This is a rather dry topic so to keep it simple and short is a great idea. She touches on just about every area so it really is a comprehensive resource. I was a little concerned that it would be out of date as HIPAA requirements are an ever changing landscape but I was surprised to find that it was mostly current with a few exceptions (see below).
Some concerns I encountered: (1) she talks about using Skype. I'm not sure if she's using the term "Skype" as a catch all term for video conferencing (like someone would use "googling" for "Internet search") or if she really means using Skype software. Either way Skype isn't HIPAA compliant so it concerns me that an author writing about psychotherapy documentation could suggest the use of a non HIPAA compliant software application. (2) there's no talk of collateral informed consent. I was hoping to get some examples of collateral informed consent.
