The Power of Writing in Organizations: From Letters to Online Interactions (Organization and Management Series), by Anne-Laure Fayard, Anc

This book demonstrates the power of writing in informal and formal organizations in the past and the present. It shows how writing, despite long lasting criticisms that can be traced back to Plato, and in spite of its frequent definition as a mere recording medium is in fact a creative mode of communication that supports the expression of emotions, the developing knowledge, and the building of strong communities among faraway individuals. The first part of the book illustrates how this has been true historically. The focus on writing as a fundamental mode of communication – the other being speech or the oral mode – is still important in our technology-infused world, where writing seems to have been reduced to short cryptic text messages or tweets. Precisely because of their heavy reliance on technology, current practices are in need of a deeper understanding that focus on deep as opposed to surface features and unveil the four essential mechanisms – objectification, reflecting, specifying, and addressing – that give writing its creative powers.
In the second part of the book, we use contemporary case studies and interviews to illustrate how shifting our focus from the media to the mode of communication and focusing on the mechanisms of writing allows us to go beyond current debates about the capabilities of various communication media and to understand better today’s communicative practices. This book is an attempt to unveil the powers of writing as well as to highlight the implications for organizations of the potential loss of these powers in today’s world where writing-based distributed collaborations, interpersonal relationships, and online communities are key sources of innovation and support for individuals and organizations.

Review

“This is an important book, but it is also a delight to read. It is important because it calls attention to a neglected dimension of organization, its foundation in the media of communication. It is a pleasure to read because its analysis is concise and to the point, and it is enriched by relevant illustrative examples. It is the kind of book that should be part of every student’s introduction to organizational and management studies, but it is also a book that we should all read, to understand the world we are in, where reading is taking on a whole new meaning when books are becoming accessible, as never before.” - James Taylor, Emeritus Professor of Communication, Université de Montréal, Canada

“This is a most timely book. In a world where writing increasingly appears as cryptic one-line text-messaging, it reminds us of the true powers of writing that come from a focus on the deep structure of communication – expressing emotions, developing knowledge, and building community – rather than surface features. The book is useful to anyone interested in understanding the impact of new communication technologies on organizational processes, and in harnessing the true powers of writing." - C. Marlene Fiol, Professor of Strategic Management, The Business School, University of Colorado Denver, USA

"By focusing on the written mode rather than on specific communication media, Fayard and Metiu bring a refreshing and productive new perspective to the literature on computer-mediated-communication (CMC). They show that writing―whether letters three centuries ago or email today―has critical powers for expressing emotions, developing knowledge, and building communities. The historical cases that they analyze bring a particular richness to their argument. This is a must-read for all CMC scholars, but also for a wide audience interested in what new communication technologies mean for society." - JoAnne Yates, Sloan Distinguished Professor of Management, MIT Sloan School of Management

"It is generally assumed that writing is an activity reserved for novelists, scholars and journalists. Yet writing plays a crucial role in organizing, not only as means of communication, but also as means of inscribing and stabilizing actions and events. Anca Metiu and Anne-Laure Fayard explore writing on paper and online, within and outside formal organizations, thus revealing its less recognized but vital functions." -Barbara Czarniawska, Professor of Management Studies, University of Gothenburg, Sweden

How the Irish Became White, by Noel Ignatiev

Ignatiev traces the tattered history of Irish and African-American relations, revealing how the Irish used labor unions, the Catholic Church and the Democratic party to succeed in American. He uncovers the roots of conflict between Irish-Americans and African-Americans and draws a powerful connection between the embracing of white supremacy and Irish "success" in 19th century American society.

From Publishers Weekly
In the first half of the 19th century, some three million Irish emigrated to America, trading a ruling elite of Anglo-Irish Anglicans for one of WASPs. The Irish immigrants were (self-evidently) not Anglo-Saxon; most were not Protestant; and, as far as many of the nativists were concerned, they weren't white, either. Just how, in the years surrounding the Civil War, the Irish evolved from an oppressed, unwelcome social class to become part of a white racial class is the focus of Harvard lecturer Ignatiev's well-researched, intriguing although haphazardly structured book. By mid-century, Irish voting solidarity gave them political power, a power augmented by the brute force of groups descended from the Molly Maguires. With help, the Irish pushed blacks out of the lower-class jobs and neighborhoods they had originally shared. And though many Irish had been oppressed by the Penal Laws, they opposed abolition?even when Daniel O'Connell, "the Liberator," threatened that Irish-Americans who countenanced slavery would be recognized "as Irishmen no longer." The book's structure lacks cohesion: chapters zigzag chronologically and geographically, and Ignatiev's writing is thick with redundancies and overlong digressions. But for the careful reader, he offers much to think about and an important perspective on the American history of race and class.
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
In a book he admits raises more questions than it answers, Ignatiev, a radical activist and editor of the journal Race Traitor, asserts that the Irish were initially discriminated against in the United States and "became white" by embracing racism, a concept Ignatiev (citing Daniel O'Connell) says they learned in the United States. Ignatiev targets the Irish because they were the largest immigrant group to compete with blacks for manual labor jobs. Does American labor history dismiss racism as an element in the workers' struggles? Did oppression in Ireland under the Penal Laws help to make the Irish oppressors in America, or did they learn racism only after reaching America? While many of the primary sources support Irish racism, fewer support Ignatiev's opinion on where it began. This book is more a springboard for discussion than a source of answers but is strongly recommended for that purpose.?Robert C. Moore, DuPont Merck Pharmaceutical Co. Information Svcs., N. Billerica, Mass.

Review
"...carefully researched and often-illuminating." -- The New York Times Magazine

"In the historical literature on "race" relations there is much that safely can be ignored. However from time to time a study comes along that truly can be called "path breaking," "seminal," "essential," a "must read." How the Irish Became White is such a study. Squarely in the intellectual tradition of C.L.R. James, and extending and building upon the work of Alexander Saxton and David Roediger, Noel Ignatiev has produced that rare work of historical scholarship that while firmly grounded in past events, also speaks forcefully to current concerns. Well done Brother Ignatiev." -- Professor John Bracey, W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies, University of Massachusetts, Amherst

"This meditation on the sources of racial antipathy is no ordinary work of history, but a sophisticated polemic against traditional conceptions of race . .." -- Boston Globe

A challenging but worthwhile read
By Raven
This is a hard book to read, not because of any overdose of erudition or inaccessibility of the text, but due to the emotional reaction it can evoke from the reader. (This is easily demonstrated by a look at the other reviews.) If one has Irish ancestry, it's hard not to take personally. However, a historical retrospective of the social perceptions of Irish-Americans over the last 150 years is well worth reading. The shift in Irish-American image over time is fascinating; it's pleasing to see a group pull themselves out of disfavor and disturbing to see it happen at the expense of others in similar disfavor. Ignatiev illustrates the context of this perception shift well, with illustrative examples from events and news sources of the time. The book is moderately well documented, allowing the reader to search out further references at will. While there are a few points where the author oversimplifies for length and cohesiveness of narrative, overall it's an interesting read, and a reasonable treatment of a painful and complicated issue.

Never really got to the point
By M. Snyder
I read this book with great anticipation. I am a student of Irish American history and this book stood out as one that had great potential, but never really got off the ground. Ignatiev, in my opinion, never got to his point. The book rambled on about fire fighters and Philadelphia but never equated how this made the Irish "white." It really more argued about how Irish and Blacks lived together for a long time and then all of a sudden the Irish started to hate Blacks--but never went into any detail about why or how; instead it talked about Irish labor strikes--against other whites--and the political career of an opportunistic Irish politician/fireman. The book also glazed over the St Patrick's Brigade in Mexico and never mentioned anything about the role the Irish played in the Civil War, national elections, or the draft riots. This study is not "path breaking" as the back cover says but is instead incomplete at best. Shannon's "The American Irish" is a more complete and better told story.

Design for Learning in Virtual Worlds, the first book focused specifically on how to design virtual worlds for educational purposes, explores:

• the history and evolution of virtual worlds

• the theories behind the use of virtual worlds for learning

• the design of curricula in virtual worlds

• design guidelines for elements experienced in virtual worlds that support learning

• design guidelines for learning quests and activities in virtual worlds.

The authors also examine the theories and associated design principles used to create embedded assessments in virtual worlds. Finally, a framework and methodology is provided to assist professionals in evaluating "off-the-shelf" virtual worlds for use in educational and training settings. Rough Medicine: Surgeons at Sea in the Age of Sail, by Joan Druett

Using diaries, journals, and correspondences, Druett recounts the daily grind surgeons on nineteenth-century whaling ships faced: the rudimentary tools they used, the treatments they had at their disposal, the sorts of people they encountered in their travels, and the dangers they faced under the harsh conditions of life at sea.

From Publishers Weekly
Why would a medical doctor put himself on a whaling vessel in the age of sail? The pay was not tremendous, the company less than stimulating and the danger of disaster significant. Having sketched the origins of doctoring at sea, highlighting John Woodall (1569-1643), "the Father of Sea Surgery," Druett for the most part follows a group of British doctors who shipped out in the 1830s to find adventure and fortune in exotic waters such as the Celebes Sea. Also included is an account of one distinguished New York surgeon, John B. King, who sailed at the same time on a Nantucket whaler. None did amazingly well, nor did any do especially badly, but their collective experience will be of special interest to readers who enjoy the literature of sailing ships. Druett showcases excellent research with generous quotations of primary documentsAsome of which are reproduced along with paintings, etchings, photographs and drawings. One of the three appendices compares what Dr. Woodall's and Dr. King's medical chests contained, demonstrating that the herbal treatments used during the 17th century had been replaced by more purely chemical remedies in the 19th. The pursuit of adventure seems to have been these generally well-educated gentlemen's motivation, but Druett's writing does not conform to the fast-paced style of adventure narrative. Those who enjoyed Patrick O'Brian's eye for historical detail will delight in Druett, a dedicated historian, but they will not find the same talent for drama. (Dec.)

From Booklist
New Zealander Druett, who has written on women at sea, here considers 11 male professional seafarers, surgeons on whaling ships during 1823-43, on voyages that took them to the South Seas, south and east of China, and lasted from two to four years. Druett has read and absorbed the men's journals, which range in manner from cool and scientific in the notes of an amateur biologist to newsy and illustrated in those of a particularly attentive observer. She opens the book with an account of the first surgeon general of the East India Company and his medical sea chest, and continues with English whaling ship surgeons because England required whalers to carry a surgeon (the U.S. didn't, and a captain often had to perform as one). Filled with accounts of the drama and tedium of whaling, exciting battles with whales, and the occasional gruesome medical event, the book should please sailing buffs, history buffs, and fans of the well-told, lively story. `As long as men and women have gone to sea, doctors have accompanied them.'
By Jennifer Cameron-Smith
What inspired doctors to sign up for journeys that could involve spending three years away from home? What surgical tools and medicines did doctors have available at sea in the age of sail?

In this interesting book, Ms Druett provides a history of the role of physicians in the closed society of a ship of sea in the age of sail. This was the time in which many lengthy voyages of discovery were undertaken and considerable periods were spent out of the sight of land and far away from home. Ms Druett is a maritime historian rather than a physician, and her perspective is fascinating. It may be that a physician will one day tackle this subject from a purely medical perspective but such an approach is unlikely to include the life and colour of Ms Druett's account.

So, why did doctors undertake long voyages at sea? The answers are many and varied. Some did it for the adventure and others because of their desire to practice medicine at sea. Others were escaping their pasts and in some cases it is not at all clear. What is very clear, though, is that travellers in the age of sail were brave and the doctors who tended them did so with very limited tools and medicines.

I would recommend this book to anyone who want to know more about maritime history.

Best Medicine
By John Townley
Medicine has long been an adventurous and rewarding profession - but these days we count those adventures in the halls of hospitals and rewards range from fat grants to the Nobel Prize. No modern physician, however, can tell the tale of being lionized by South Sea cannibals, tattooed from neck to toe, and then living to profit from several hit books about the experience.
That's just one of the unlikely thrillers found in the pages of Joan Druett's engaging and well-documented book Rough Medicine, a sweeping account of the lives of ships' physicians during the rough-and-ready times of the tall ship whalers. Armed with only a whiff of what would become modern medical knowledge and a sizeable chest of surgical tools, chemical cures, and organic nostrums they dealt with scurvy, malaria, yellow fever, bloody accidents and war wounds in ways the medical profession had never before dreamed. Indeed, if the surgeon was absent, the captain could fill in, administering a bit of bottle #6 with unguent #23 according to a book of symptoms and hope for the best!
What was so revolutionary about this? Everything. When the great sea trade routes were first established in the late Renaissance, medicine on shore was a bureaucratic tangle of licensed and often unionized doctors, surgeons, physicians, and pharmacists, all with their own conflicting turf, still mostly leaning on the antiquated texts of Galen to mete out their medical attentions.
That worked badly enough on shore, but at sea it was more or less useless. Starting with Dr. James Woodall's first all-in-one medicine-to-go sea chest in 1619, all the competing parts of the profession were packed into a single box and shipped off to sea under the command of one ship's surgeon. It was the ancestor of the modern emergency medical kit you now find in a paramedic's vehicle - designed to cut to the chase and get the job done, using whichever medical approach seemed to fit the emergency.
Ships doctors, along the way, turned into keen scientific observers of the societies and medicines of the seven seas and often doubled as accountants and journal-keepers (they could read and write) and even found themselves in command of the quarterdeck when the captain was busy in a whaleboat with a harpoon in his hand.
Some got rich, some came back in rags, some never came back at all. But all found the necessity to turn the medical profession into a personal unified vision of problems, symptoms, and remedies, judged less by dated physical concepts and more by immediate physical necessity. In doing so, they presaged the modern emergency room, where quick common sense and triage ruled the day, along with a large dose of human understanding and compassion.
This could have been a windy, scholarly tome on medical history as it evolved upon the waves, but under Druett's skillful hand it is a page-turner, backed with what is clearly the understanding and background of a world-class maritime scholar. I read it straight through at one sitting, including the complete listed contents of two period sea medicine chests, much of which can be found today in an alternative medicine store. What goes around, comes around - thousands of years of hands-on medicine still has a lot to say to us. In Ms. Druett's wonderful book, it has surely found home port.

New Ways of Organizing Work: Developments, Perspectives, and Experiences (Routledge Studies in Human Resource Development)From Brand: Ro

New Ways of Organizing Work offers a broader understanding of changes to the way work is organized and the implications for relevant stakeholders. It brings together contributions from a well established group of international scholars to examine the nature and consequences of new ways of working. The book draws on studies of a variety of new forms of work, involving a diverse range of employees and drawing on experiences in a variety of countries. It includes three main empirical sections. The first focuses on different forms of work and working arrangements, stimulated by the use of technology, increased competitive pressure and media portrayal of work and working. In contrast to much other work in the field, a strong theme of this book is individuals’ experiences of new ways of working. The second empirical section examines this theme with a specific focus on remote workers and their responses to new ways of working. Exploring contemporary trends towards increasing use of global teams, the third section examines the implications of distributed teams and the challenges for managing performance and knowledge transfer.

The End of the First Indochina War: A Global History (Routledge Studies on History and Globalization), by James Waite

The French withdrawal from Vietnam in 1954 was the product of global pressures and triggered significant global consequences. By treating the war as an international issue, this book places Indochina at the center of the Cold War in the mid-1950s. Arguing that the Indochina War cannot be understood as a topic of Franco-US relations, but ought to be treated as international history, this volume brings in Vietnamese and other global agents, including New Zealand, Australia, and especially Britain, as well as China and the Soviet Union. Importantly, the book also argues that the successful French withdrawal from Vietnam – a political defeat for the Eisenhower administration – helped to avert outright warfare between the major powers, although with very mixed results for the inhabitants of Vietnam who faced partition and further bloodshed.

The End of the First Indochina War explores the complexities of intra-alliance competition over global strategy – especially between the United States and British Commonwealth – arguing that these rivalries are as important to understanding the Cold War as east-west confrontation. This is the first truly global interpretation of the French defeat in 1954, based on the author’s research in five western countries and the latest scholarship from historians of Vietnam, China, and Russia. Readers will find much that is new both in terms of archival revelations and original interpretations.

Individual and Society: Sociological Social Psychology, by Lizabeth Crawford, Katherine Novak

Unlike other texts for undergraduate sociological social psychology courses, this text presents the three distinct traditions (or "faces") in sociological social psychology (symbolic interactionism, social structure and personality, and group processes and structures) and emphasizes the different theoretical frameworks within which social psychological analyses are conducted within each research tradition. With this approach, the authors make clear the link between "face" of sociological social psychology, theory, and methodology. Thus, students gain an appreciably better understanding of the field of sociological social psychology; how and why social psychologists trained in sociology ask particular kinds of questions; the types of research they are involved in; and how their findings have been, or can be, applied to contemporary societal patterns and problems. Great writing makes this approach successful and interesting for students, resulting in a richer, more powerful course experience. A website offers instructors high quality support material, written by the authors, which you will appreciate and value."

Review

"This work combines a fairly exhaustive review of the relevant literature, in-depth descriptions of both classic studies and current research, and applications based in real life. Add to this questions and thought exercises designed to help students learn to apply concepts to their own lives, as well as ways to seek out data to test hypotheses, and this text is the whole package. This text easily surpasses any others I have used for undergraduate Social Psychology classes."

-Tiffiny Guidry, University of Alabama (January, 2013)

"This text has several strengths in comparison to the Rohall book (Pearson,) I have used. It offers more depth, both in the theoretical perspectives and the topics. It potentially gives students a better sense of social psychology as a distinct field by explaining how and why social psychology can answer certain kinds of questions, and not others. And it provides more ways to engage students with the material as they read."

-Leslie Irvine, University of Colorado (January, 2013)

"This book is outstanding. This would be an excellent textbook for a social psychology course with an instructor who is from the SI orientation….it is better than the Charon text, and in my opinion, that is saying a lot!"

-Dominic Little, California State University, Northridge (January, 2013)

"The greater emphasis placed on SOCIOLOGICAL social psychology in this textbook resembles what I see in the book I currently use (Social Psychology: Sociological Perspectives by Rohall, Milkie, and Lucas 2011, Pearson). It is especially similar that both textbooks introduce and organizes materials around the three faces of sociological social psychology: SI, SSP, and GP (or GPS). However, I feel that this textbook does a superior job of providing more in-depth explanation of each perspective by dedicating a chapter for each. For that reason, I would definitely consider adopting this text over the one I am currently using."

-Aya Kimura Ida, California State University, Sacramento (January, 2013)
