A term paper or lecture notes

I have a couple shelves of Shakespeare books, including all the usual guiding lights. I don't think I'd buy this book again. It reads like a cross between a term paper into which the eager writer has thrown every possible source to prove his diligence, and the author's Harvard lecture notes, with their somewhat more long-winded, chatty style. Also, a lot of the things she points out seem to fall into the category of "universal truths," such as the transition in life from childhood to adulthood with sexual awakening. Maybe I'm going out on a limb here, but I hardly think that is unique to Shakespeare! In fact, in her discussion of the Comedies, which end in marriages and obviously have this theme, you are forced to wonder why the focus on mining these truths exclusively in Shakespeare, since the comedies reworked material that was popular at the time and hardly unique to the Bard. What's interesting is HOW he treated this material, not the fact that he did so in umpteen plays! Finally, it is not written to be a pleasant read, accessible to the casual reader. I'd read it if I needed material for a college paper, but not for pleasure. It is also kind of pricey for a slim paperback.
