Review

"Gaming the Past makes a compelling case that computer-based historical simulation games are a legitimate and important curriculum resource for 21st-century learning that goes beyond hipness or novelty to foster the rich and rigorous critical analysis, interpretation, and synthesis skills that are so fundamental to a robust democracy. For the unsure and convinced history teacher or teacher educator, this is a worthwhile read and handy guide."
―The History Teacher

"One of the most comprehensive resources I have found.  Whether providing a rationale for parents and administrators to actual lesson plans, this book is ‘one stop shopping’ for digital game use in the social studies classroom."

Very useful book for the tech savvy teacher
By Evan C. Wright
I purchased Gaming the Past because I am both a certified history teacher and a programmer of educational software. This is an excellent book to have if you are either. For teachers interested in using games and simulations to teach social studies, this book is going to save you a lot of work as well as trial and error. Simply getting a handle on what software is available is a huge task let alone evaluating its classroom suitability. Fortunately, Gaming the Past provides not only a survey of available software applications, including their merits and weaknesses, but practical strategies for using them in the classroom. For a variety of reasons, teachers who wish to use simulations will have to adapt commercial games to their curricula and it is not necessarily obvious how to do this. However, the book contains Dr. McCall's experiences doing exactly this. Additionally, this is an excellent resource to own if you are interested in developing educational software. The needs of the classroom teacher are very different from that of the recreational gamer and this book will help you get an idea of what exactly those needs are. It would be also wise to consult the catalog of software in appendix A before starting on a programming project to make sure your work will be sufficiently different from existing simulations. Dr. McCall's book is the type of work that aspiring teachers need to read in order to break education out of the lecture model into which it all too often regresses, as well as to make it more appealing to today's tech savvy students.
