Great overview of near death literature

I stumbled onto this book after losing my Mother. I didn't want to read just one author who might overload me with his own set of beliefs on the subject. I wanted a representative and reasonably objective overview of the subject, and that is just what this book delivers. It covers the full range from uplifting stories of light and love and ultimate understanding on the other side to academic essays on the cultural and religious significance of near death imagery. You get believers and nonbelievers, scientists and saints between the covers of this collection. I read the whole book and am rereading it now. For a skeptic who really wonders where her Mom is now, it is comforting and thought provoking without being saccharine or preachy.

I have read quite a few books about life after "death.." or the study of death.. even from the occult's point of view. What I love about this work is its lack of assertions.. or assumptions. The work is a recount/summary of other people's experiences, straight from their own books/works. It's interesting to read how some of these people were forced to experience the pain they'd inflicted on others throughout their "human life..." The book is humorous, entertaining, and simply a diary of people's afterlife experiences. From a non religious point of view, I like this book because the people state what they experienced. It's a very factual, matter of fact book, with some opinions interjected. I wanted the opinions, but I like that the author does not tell us "there is ______.. and this is why _____.. and here's what happens: ______" etc.. It's just a diary of people's accounts of "heaven.." or "hell.." however you want to look at it, along with how perhaps they changed their lives after returning to earth (after near death experiences). This book finally delivers what I was looking for regarding the after life: factual recounts from NDEs (Near Death Experiences). For those confused, the book is recount of Near Death Experiences.. some of the people quoted were "dead" for up to 1.5 hours and returned to life after "dying.."

I read this book for my Anthropology of Death course. It is the best book that I have read for any of my classes. It looks at all aspects of death, it integrates different opions from doctors, psychologists, and other people who have had near death experiences. It discusses the stages of dying and the NDE. It was a great book. It gets you thinking about what could be beyond.

About the Author

John Hattie is Professor and Director of the Melbourne Education Research Institute at the University of Melbourne, Australia and Honorary Professor at the University of Auckland. The author of the international bestsellers Visible Learning and Visible Learning for Teachers, he has served as President of the International Text Commission, and associate editor of the British Journal of Educational Psychology. He has published and presented over 550 papers and has supervised 160 theses students.

Eric Anderman is Professor of Educational Psychology and Chair of the Department of Educational Studies at The Ohio State University. In 1999 he was awarded the Richard E. Snow Early Career Achievement Award from the American Psychological Association (APA) and he served as President of Division 15 of APA in 2008. In addition to authoring and editing several books, he has served on the editorial boards of several major journals and as the Associate Editor of the Journal of Educational Psychology from 2002-2009.

This books is very helpful with conceptualizing and contextualizing student achievement needs internationally from primary to tertiary education. However, I wish more chapters could have been devoted towards tertiary needs.

I hate leaving negative reviews for books

I hate leaving negative reviews for books, but this one was just too much. It was assigned for a graduate level class, however, if you're familiar with or interested in educational research this book is not for you. Many of the topics addressed are well covered by other prominent researchers- and that is to be expected for an overview. I'm not criticizing that. But if this book is being used for introductory purposes it's not very good. It wasn't well cited; there were times where interesting studies were addressed but there was no way of knowing what those studies were, or who did them. There was no way to pursue additional inquiry.. if I hadn't rented it, I would quote some of the more unnerving passages.

All I'm asking here, is that if you are a faculty member and you are considering assigning this book, please take the time to skim through it first. There are some chapters that would be good for introducing a topic for further inquiry. But as a student, for the price- it may not be worth it to ask your students to purchase the whole book.

A timely discourse on an urgent international issue

In this important work, leading scholars from around the Western world join together to discuss the problematic science, ethics and morality underlying contemporary approaches to populations deemed high risk. These include sex offenders, suspected terrorists, illegal immigrants, violent youth, and the mentally ill.

Among the highlights:

Forensic psychologist David Cooke and statistician Christine Michie of Scotland issue their strongest warning yet about the fraud being perpetrated by proponents of "actuarial" risk prediction, whose illusion of scientific certainty camouflages predictions that are highly inaccurate and misleading.

Legal scholar Eric Janus shines a spotlight on the United States' costly experiment with civil detention of sex offenders. Janus's enticing theory is that the Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) laws are a tool of conservatives bent on rolling back feminist gains in the struggle against sexual violence and gender inequality. He advocates for a return to an empirically guided, public-health approach as the sanest way to combat sexual violence while also safeguarding tax dollars from waste.

Several chapters focus on a hybrid model out of Scotland, the "Order for Lifelong Restriction." This order involves the imposition of an indeterminate sentence to be followed by lifelong supervision.

Many of the chapters in this timely collection will no doubt prove prophetic. The current state of fear-based hysteria, like all social movements, will wane in time. Politicians and the public will realize how costly and ineffective are many of the currently cherished practices and will reverse course. As the editors conclude:

"What is clear from many of the chapters in this book is that schemes for imprisoning or detaining people for what they might do are costly, likely to contravene international human rights obligations, and have not proven to be effective in reducing crime, particularly sex offences. Detaining more and more people gives rise to the risk that detention regimes will collapse under the weight of numbers."

An area of controversy

This book covers an area which is in controversy in NSW where the reviewer lives and works. There are psychiatrists there who state that risk assessment and risk management planning are not a valid use of the resources allocated to mental health services and there are those who are working hard to train other staff in the art. this book is an international look at initiatives in this field of endeavour. it provides a host of information for the curious professional which is invaluable in preparing teaching re models to compare with the local situation where they are working. it also provides reassurance that the movement to do careful risk assessment and risk management planning is very alive and well supported and not an aberration. It helps to look at the legislation that might create structures to carry this process out ,not only on the high risk mentally ill, but also with those patients who have personality disorder and others just involved in the criminal Justice system. I think that it should be required reading for all Forensic Psychiatrists and those professionals who work with hem, legal, psychological,and nursing.
