An embarrassment of riches

Ten years ago, if one wanted to teach a course in film music, it took many hours of photocopying source material and a compromise as to which of the few available (and expensive) textbooks to require. Now, one is spoiled by choice. This sourcebook follows on last year's The Hollywood Film Music Reader as well as this spring's Celluloid Symphonies: Texts and Contexts in Film Music History, and is perhaps, the more important of the three. Cooke's Reader collated a "best of" of much of what was still available, and a "greatest hits" of that which was not, plenty of essential reading. Hubbert's Celluloid Symphonies is another great compilation, but her reading of the history brings little new or important to the subject. Perhaps because Cooke and Hubbert beat them to the usual suspects, Wierzbicki, Platte, and Roust both roam further afield and bravely try to bring the collection right up to this year. All three collections are well annotated, but as the Routledge Sourcebook contains many divergent and unexpected sources, the annotations are all that more informative, rather then just making the necessary introductions. There are a number of overlapping inclusions, including the e.g. ever popular "Jackass Music", Clarence Sinn's "Music for the Pictures", Rapée, so if one is limited to a single volume, you have to compare the included titles carefully.
What I have especially enjoyed in this collection: the unknown to me survey of French opinions circa 1919 (Part 1-2.2) and the last two parts which take on the last 25 years. The choice of Michael Prager's 2004 Keyboard Magazine article that describes the working process of a contemporary composer's atelier, is surprisingly choice. But contemporary media music has evolved into such a strictly functional element that it is hard to find the same kind of gushy musicological or popular appreciations of recent film music, outside of the fanboy or trainspotter genre. In this volume the editors have dug hard and scratched up a thin gruel compared to that of the first three-quarters of film music history, but their attempt deserves applause.
This brings the general, if not complaints, certainly worries about "film music" literature. Almost all film music books must be pitched at a general audience, keeping a ceiling on the type and depth of material that can be used. The feature film is to media as Ferraris and Bentleys are to automobiles: they represent a thin layer on the top of what is being produced. Whether television music should even be included in such a volume is the stuff of long discussions, but I can not but feel that this lack of strong representation of the "other" 99% represents an unspoken-of elephant in the room. Deeper academic material, such as the studies that have been done in the scientific or semiotic fields, are still smaller in number and of a hard-to-read-for-a-layman, technical nature, but should they not be represented in a small way? One could imagine a layman being at least curious about Annabel Cohen's Congruence-Associationist Framework, or Scott Lipscomb's accent structure alignment research Selected Reports in Ethnomusicology, Vol. 12: Perspectives in Systematic Musicology.
Well, that is why there are editors, and these have done a great work and service to the field. Are you interested in film music? If so, you can't afford not to have this book.
