Yes--the sexual relations expert is now a proud grandmother of three, and she's got plenty of grandparenting information, advice, and resources to share with families. Areas of discussion include, but are not limited to, common concerns (spare the rod and spoil the child?), the developing relationship of grandparenting, choosing your grandparenting style, grandparents and divorce, and the ever-changing definition of "family." With intelligence and wit, Westheimer "offers valuable insights into a rewarding and complex relationship that unites generations."

Two well-known authors present their views of grandparenthood, and both are excellent. "Dr. Ruth" Westheimer (Dr. Ruth Talks About Grandparents, Farrar, 1997, among many other titles) does what she does best, presenting thorough, commonsense, well-organized advice filled with lots of love all around. She argues that "you are not the parent" and that problems must be anticipated before they loom large. Open to the different roles and styles grandparents can adopt, Dr. Ruth insists that grandparenting is really just giving your love and your time. Clearly, Dr. Ruth relishes her own grandparenthood and hopes that all readers will do the same. There are bibliographies in each chapter, with lots of recommended resources. The real zest comes from Elgin (e.g., The Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense, LJ 8/80). She comes up with 21 principles, including "the grandmother way is the easy way" and "it's always safe to talk to a grandmother." She goes into collecting family stories, maintaining a family loan fund, dealing with disgrace, and what to do for "the dwindles" (remedy: take to your bed). Elgin's point is that "grandmothers matter enormously." She praises young men who find old ladies beautiful, values the art of grannycraft, and relishes aging. Clearly a delight to read. The little old lady whose frankness about sex makes linebackers blush changes her tune, because Dr. Ruth has become Grandma Ruth. With the discrete help of Kaplan, she advises how to be a good grandparent, beginning with the injunction to get along first with your grown child and his or her spouse. Don't be a boss or an adversary to the middle generation, she says, and try to answer your grandchildren's companionship needs appropriately at each stage of their lives by, for instance, playing with them when they're pre-and early-school age or maintaining caring contact during busy, self-absorbed teen years. She wouldn't be Dr. Ruth, of course, if she didn't puncture some myths, and here she lays the historical three-generation family to rest: folks mostly didn't live long enough and had too many children for there to be much three-generational cohabitation before the middle of this century. In compassionate, no-nonsense chapters, she also recognizes nontraditional, single-parent, and divorced families, and how grandparents can help them, and grandparents who have to parent their grandchildren. Finally, she discusses how grandparents can counter boorish humor about the elderly and serve, when they decline, as models for approaching life's end well. With resource references concluding each chapter, this will probably be another hit for one of America's favorite advisors. Ray Olson

Grandparenthood

This is an awesome book. It offers suggestions on how to not lose focus of your first role "Parent", while enjoying your new role as Grandparent. I am awaiting the birth of my first Grandchild and this book has helped me see the importance of so many things I probably wouldn't have thought about. It's not all serious and demanding...it's filled with humor and shared experiences. I love this book and would recommend it to anyone...even those with experience in Grandparenting. Five and a half stars for this one!
