A Book To Sink Your Teeth Into

This relatively small book is an excellent starting point for those interested in whether a statistical analysis of available facts surrounding arms sales and war can be correlated. I'll spoil the surprise: not easily done!
I am a Hawk, and I suspect the writer is not. However, I will not be able to throw stones for a long time, as the writer selects and justifies analytical models, methods, and data. You might argue the technical points, but not the overall effort. And you can't even begin to argue until you have absorbed the provided information. A must for those wanting to enter into statistical 'proof' for or against weapons control and conflict discussions. May also be a good shopping point for future theses and research for mathematically inclined war and peace specialists.
Those with zero statistical background should have a 'reading buddy' for this book.

About the Author
Patricia Hill Collins is Charles Phelps Taft Distinguished Professor in the Department of African-American Studies at the University of Cincinnati. Inspired

Patricia Hill Collins exemplifies a practitioner's and theorist's point of view on black feminism as it relates to Africa American and our African sisters. She references critical and inspiring data and quotes from a varied repetoire of authors, historians, and philosophers. The author explains the context and format of her subject upon initial reading. This book also draws commonalities among the issues and concerns among African American women and our international sisterhood (i.e., African, Carribean, etc.,) It illustrates the social and cultural values among all groups, the commonalities among the values while focusing on the African American feminist aspect. This is a must read for any person, be it woman or not, African American or other. It brings about a social and cultural understanding that is pertinent to the "holonomy" of understanding and appreciating varied cultural, social and historical values and experiences while commencing to the building of community. Please add this title to your collection of literature. You won't be disappointed; if for nothing more than to open your world to receive another perspective.

A dense but accessible read

This book is dense with thoughts and ideas, written in a looping structure that weaves the vast diversity of black women's voices into a colorful tapestry of intricate detail and contradiction. This is its strength, and its weakness. Collins specifically avoids exclusivity, and this means she includes a few... well, "out there" thoughts from others. Most notably, she cites Tuan on p 139 who asserts that people go to zoos to see monkeys copulate. But this is an extreme, and very rare. More commonly, she grounds these diverse thoughts in real-world experiences. Most impressively, she makes the case that intellectual thought is not limited to the academy, but must include all those who think seriously about their lives. This means that groups - such as Black women - who have been historically excluded from the academy can rediscover their own intellectual traditions outside of academia, and tie them all together. I am glad that I read this book. It has many perspectives I simply was not aware of before I opened it. While I may not agree with all of Collins' assertions, I definitely respect them. It is a dense book, but the very structure of it makes it accessible through its layering technique. Further, Collins writes in a unadorned style that makes absorbing unfamiliar viewpoints all the easier.

Collins'analysis of black feminism is an enlightening piece of literature that forces its readers to chanllenge main stream assumptions and discover the underlying mechanisms of racism and sexism in America. To create this effect, she uses a range of feminist perspectives form the calm subtleties of Angela Davis to the slightly boisterous philosopy of Bell Hooks. Nevertheless, by displaying these perspectives equally Collins shows that the struggle for equally is not an individual struggle but one that requires collectively. This book is intensely thought provoking and it is guaranteed to give its readers profound insight into black feminism.

An Expanded Understanding of the Value and Nature of Democracy

In this book, author Morton Schoolman addresses the familiar idea of democracy from a new and liberating angle. He offers an account that takes this highly valued form of politics beyond formal governmental structures or processes of political participation to the development of the idea of a "culture of democracy," which is distinguished by the presence of a form of aesthetic reason that enables a new relationship of individuals to difference. Rather than engage in the 'violent' behavior that results from the perspective that there is one, absolute and true representation of reality, participants in this democratic culture are able to relate to each other in ways that recognize and thrive off of the the contingent and multiplicitous nature of human identity and understanding.

By demonstrating how democracy offers a way of negotiating difference that is respectful of the pluralistic nature of human existence, Schoolman offers a justification for the promotion of global democratization that is refreshingly absent of the ideological disconnects that are the hallmark of mainstream neo-liberal theories, which tie the achievement of greater freedom in society to the economic structures of "free-market" capitalism. In the current global context of the increasingly violent geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East and the rise of China, a country notorious for human rights abuses, to a position of significant global influence, Schoolman's book is especially timely in offering hope and purpose through the pursuit of democracy to scholars, students, decision-makers and ordinary citizens alike.

Bob Bertolino, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Rehabilitation Counseling at Maryville University in St. Louis, Missouri and Senior Clinical Advisor at Youth In Need, Inc. He is a licensed marital and family therapist, professional counselor, and clinical social worker in the state of Missouri, a National Certified Counselor, Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, National Board Certified Hypnotherapist, and a clinical member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

Good book for positive psychology groups

This book contains many useful ideas and exercises for a positive psychology group. It has been an important resource for the weekly positive aging group I facilitate.

Not useful for therapists

Very thin content. If you've been using positive psychology in your practice by incorporating research techniques then you're also going to find this handbook very disappointing. I was hoping for printable handouts but wish that I'd just purchased the Kindle version and saved some money. There's nothing but light over-views that are lacking. To me these authors don't have a practical working knowledge of the subject, it's like they've taken some research in the field and lacking that deeper working knowledge, have turned out some pages to sell based on what they've gleaned.

If you haven't studied positive psychology or kept current with the research then you'll most likely find some ideas helpful although I would recommend reading the material and research noted in the footnotes. For me this was a waste of time and $55.

I think that as a self-help book this could be very useful. If the author's had marketed this book as a self-help book I would it another star or two.

I can't believe this book is not getting more attention. If you want to do positive psychology therapy, this is the book. It lays out many week's worth of exercises and areas of discussion. Start with this and then add to it if you want to expand your knowledge and repertoire even more.

Essential Reading for Therapists, Counselors and Coaches

As a Life Coach whose specialty is men in relationship transition, I found this book to be of great value in learning how both female and male therapists and coaches might develop greater skill in working with men. Gender in the Therapy Hour would be an excellent text for graduate students in counseling and therapy. The individual authors' personal and professional stories lend a background to their discoveries in working with the male population. Vignettes and case studies offer detailed examples of complex psychological and sociological issues that confront ordinary men today. Cogent learning points are carefully set out.

Holly Barlow Sweet is one of the contributors as well as the general editor of this book. She explains the aim of the book in her preface. She cites the consistent structure of each chapter, contributed by different female professionals. Dr. Sweet also couches the issue at hand within the context of feminism and the need to bring the principles and lessons of feminism into the world of men in a way that will offer maximum positive impact for men's lives.

Dr. Sweet sets the tone for the book in her first chapter: Women working With Men. She aptly sets forth the reasons why female therapists should care about men's issues, "Although there has been a significant increase in interest in men's studies since the early 1990s, there has been a lag in the incorporation of materials about men's issues in counseling programs." (page 3-4) She then cites the challenges and opportunities for female therapists to work with men and offers a comprehensive list of probable challenges for women who choose to work with men (pages 10-15).

In Dr. Sweet's second offering in Chapter 9, Counseling Depressed Men, she unveils this complex issue with sensitivity and much empathic regard for the men who so suffer, often in silent desperation. She also offers a series of possible therapeutic modalities that can aid in the effective treatment of this matter.

I would recommend Gender in the Therapy Hour as a required text of every graduate school's counseling curriculum. I would also recommend this as required reading for anyone currently working in the counseling and coaching fields, both to understand men better and to comprehend the challenges women face in their own therapeutic journeys when men are involved directly or tangentially.

Fair warning: this book is written by all of its female authors in a fairly dense academic/clinical style. I found some of the personal histories and professional journeys of the authors to be ponderous at times and too detailed (maybe because of my male perspective?) and wondered if more editing could have been done by the authors themselves to highlight the important points they were trying to make without quite as much back-story.

This is not a self-help book for the average reader, but is a necessary adjunct to professionals' ongoing development. The references at the end of most chapters will be welcomed by anyone doing research on this topic.
