It demonstrates how fascist ideology linked the prospect of violent ‘cleansing’ to utopias of national/racial regeneration, thus encouraging and legitimizing targeted hatred against particular ‘others’. It also shows how the diffusion and internationalization of fascism in the 1930s produced a sense of a revolutionary new beginning and created a transnational fascist ‘new order’ in which Nazi Germany came to occupy a potent position of authority. The book analyzes how the eliminationist initiative and precedent of Nazi Germany became a second ‘license’ that empowered fascist regimes across Europe to embark on their own eliminationist projects with diminished accountability. Finally, it examines how this ‘license’ – enhanced by the actions of fascists and the collapse of order caused by World War Two – released individuals and communities from the burden of legal and moral accountability, turning them into accomplishes in the most wide, brutal, and devastating genocidal campaign that the continent had ever experienced.

Aristotle Kallis is Senior Lecturer in European Studies at Lancaster University. His publications include National Socialist Propaganda and the Second World War (2005) and The Fascism Reader (2003), as well as articles and essays on the history of fascism, genocide, and propaganda.

A sobering account of the horrors of Nazism

This a fascinating study of the murderous ideology of Germany's National Socialism and of its allies in Europe.

Kallis shows that "there were fascist or `fascistised' movements across Europe that perceived themselves as `agents' of the wider National-Socialist project. Of all `agents' of collaboration these movements came to epitomise a model of extreme `collaborationism' - ideology-driven, fanatical, missionary almost unconditional. ... Their role in inciting violence against `others' among the local population, in assisting the National-Socialist authorities in their murderous tasks, in instigating pogroms, and in making all sorts of eliminationist measures possible cannot possibly be exaggerated."

In every country, these movements were a fifth column, committed to destroying their own country's independence and sovereignty by aiding Hitler to conquer it. The struggle in the Soviet Union was particularly intense, especially in Ukraine. As Kallis writes, "Throughout the 1930s the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) had developed strong links with National-Socialist Germany and became sufficiently `fascistised' in ideological and formal terms to throw its lot with the National-Socialist Neuordnung."

He notes, "leaflets prepared by the OUN in June 1941 exhorted the local population to `annihilate ... your enemies - Moscow, the Poles, the Hungarians, the Jews'. Meanwhile, OUN-staffed divisions fighting alongside the Wehrmacht forces established a reign of terror in many parts of western Ukraine, murdering thousands - predominantly Jews."

The Nazis recruited Ukrainians `for large-scale cleansing operations'. "In Ukraine, almost 28,000 were recruited - a figure that rose substantially until the end of the war, including volunteers in various SS formations that fought alongside the Germans until the very end."

In all, this book gives a sobering account of the horrors of Nazism's genocidal ideas and practice.

Cities in the Telecom Age: The Fracturing of Geographies

I have not finished this book quite yet but felt it deserved a quick note to give everyone a "head-up"! If you read any one book today for an insight into where technology is taking us - THIS IS THE ONE! It ties the internet and telecom together and explains in very studied ways where we were 10 or 15 years ago, where we are today, and where we are headed. Technology changes daily, so this book may become somewhat dated quickly, but it will be easy to update.

Multifaceted and Comprehensive

This edited book is an excellent addition to any collection of works concerning cities in the electronic age. Each chapter covers topics that provide insight and new ways of examining our ever changing urban environment. The references cited also provide a springboard for further readings on each topic.

Arora-Jonsson also analyzes how dominant ideas about the environment, development and gender equality shape the spaces in which women and men take action through global discourses and grassroots activism.

Questioning the conventional belief that development brings about greater gender equality and more efficient environmental management, this volume scrutinizes how environmental imaginations are key to crafting gender relations. It shows gender to be at the heart of environmental negotiations while at the same time making a case for environmental sensibilities as integral to gender relations. At the confluence of development, environmental and gender studies, the book contributes to a much-needed dialogue between these fields, proposing new futures in environmental management.

A comprehensive history of modernization in Turkey

This book is all about the struggle given in Turkey towards modernization or Westernization, starts with 1750 and ends with modern Turkey. Very comprehensive, covering political,educational, religious and economical changes and birth of Turkish nationalism. A refresher book for the Turks and an exampler for other nations to learn from experiences. There are too many personages to know who they were, many similar names to follow in two hunder years of struggle towards modernization but author has provided clear cut phases in every part of the revolution. This book clearly shows the obstacle mollahs put on the way of modernization.When Einstein was putting a finishing touches to his theories, finally science was allowed being thought in the schools, all the story in this book.

A Timeless Masterpiece!

For anyone who wishes to study islam and secularism (especially in Ottoman Turkey) this is a "must read" book. Portions of this book was serialized in Dogan Avci's weekly "Yon" magazine in the 1960s. Berkes was deadly accurate in his political forecast....and it is a huge loss for humanity that he died in London and not in Turkey where he had wished to retire. Despite his warnings, look where Turkey is today.

Struggle for Modernization in Muslim Turkey

This book needs to be read especially now by all muslims of the world. Obviously, the muslim world has to change, strip itself from Islamic zealotry which interferes with every aspect of life, from education to justice. The first attempt to do this occured in the Ottoman Empire. The book is the story of the first modernization movement in the moslem world: its challenges, obstructions and results.
The reformists in the empire realize that religion and social institutions have to be separated since this was what Westerners had done. The reformists want to teach contemporary science in schools but here the challenge comes. No! everything is in Kur'an so we don't need to know that so-called science. Reformists attempt to outlaw polygamy but the same challenge comes. No! It accords with Islam. By and large, from the 18th century to the 20th modernization movement in Turkey faced this kind of challenges by clergy. Islam has been a religion that interferes with every aspects of life, every social institution so that it was necessary to separate religion and social institutions (secularism). Defeats of the empire to Russians and the West necessiated these reforms and despite the challenges, inch by inch Turkish instituions were secularized.
Today's Turkey, despite its flaws in democracy and economy, stands out as the most democratic and industrialized muslim country and a serious regional power. There are lessons to be taken from the Turkish experience of secularization and modernization for all muslim countries. And this book is an excellent start off.
