In Blood Stories Janet Lee and Jennifer Sasser-Coen focus on menarche as a central aspect of body politics in contemporary society. Using a social constructivist post structuralist view of the subject, the book emphasizes that it is in part through the body that women are integrated into the social and sexual disorder, and it is in part through the discourses and disciplinary practices of menstruation, framed as ""feminine"" normative practices, that heterosexuality is constructed and reconstructed in everyday live.

Janet Lee is Associate Professor and Director of Women's Studies at Oregon State University. Jennifer Sasser Coen is a doctoral candidate and instructor in the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences at Oregon State University.

The 13-chapter text is organized around six decision-making questions― the "5Ws and H" of media ethics. The questions encourage students to articulate the issues; apply codes, policies or laws; consider the needs of stakeholders; sift and sort through conflicting values; integrate philosophic principles; and pose a "test of publicity." Specifically, the questions ask:

• What’s your problem?

• Why not follow the rules?

• Who wins, who loses?

• What’s it worth?

• Who’s whispering in your ear?

• How’s your decision going to look?

As they progress through the text, students are encouraged to resolve dozens of practical applications and increasingly complex case studies relating to journalism, new media, advertising, public relations, and entertainment.

About the Author

Jay Black is Poynter Jamison Chair in Media Ethics, Emeritus, at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. He is founding co-editor of the Journal of Mass Media Ethics and has authored or edited ten volumes. He was named co-winner of the first Freedom Forum Journalism Teacher of the Year award in 1997.

Chris Roberts is an assistant professor at the University of Alabama. He started his media career working for newspapers and radio stations in his hometown of Anniston, Alabama, before becoming a full-time reporter and editor for newspapers in Birmingham, Ala., and Columbia, S.C.

So Far, It's Great!

The only reason I haven't given this book a 5-star rating is because I haven't finished the course for which I'm using it. I can say this about it, though:

First of all, the physical quality of the book is great. The cover has a welcoming visual and tactile feel to it, and the pages are clearly made of durable paper. I plan on keeping this book when the course is over. The book's content will certainly prove applicable outside of the classroom. This book is obviously a resource that will be useful no matter what corner of the media industry I end up in.

Doing Ethics in Media is a subject matter that traverses many disciplines and several industries. The book's authors are well-spoken, well-written and credible--both having amassed decades in industry and life experience. Additionally, the supplemental online multimedia materials, which are free, have also already helped add to my grasp of course content. I look forward to using this book in the future--both in class and in my career.

Under particular scrutiny are the trope of woman/death, the eroticizing and sexualizing of death, and the ways in which the gendered subject is represented in dialogue with the processes of death, dying, and grief. Through close readings of historical literature, fantasy fictions, realistic novels, dead-narrator tales, and texts from genres including Gothic, horror, and post-disaster, James reveals not only how cultural discourses influence and are influenced by literary works, but how relevant the study of death is to adolescent fiction--the literature of "becoming."

Masterful

Emily Kuriloff's book is a beautiful, masterful interweaving of psychoanalysis and history. It combines interviews with some of the most luminous minds in psychoanalysis with careful research. It is incredible that the story of the holocaust's impact on theory and practice has hardly been touched upon until now. To understand why, you need to read this wonderful book.

An Exceptionally Important Contribution to Psychoanalysis

This is a powerful, profound, and at times frankly painful study of challenging topics of great importance. Kuriloff addresses an area of formidable complexity, the rarely-articulated interactions among historical events, the peoples and individuals both driving and driven by those events, evolution in the history of ideas, and the expression of those forces and factors in the praxis and activities of the persons and institutions that play major roles in affecting culture, scientific and clinical discourse, and in the healing arts as practiced within those societal and intellectual contexts. The author's interviews with thoughtful analysts and relatives of analysts reflecting on the Holocaust, the additional trauma of emigration and the myriad losses endured in losing one's past and one's culture, and other traumata too numerous to list in their aftermath, are touching and informative. Her attempts to formulate an understanding of how the experiences and coping styles of European analysts in America have shaped the theories, institutions, and practices of modern American psychoanalysis deserve careful study and consideration. Fascinating, insightful, and often uncomfortable, Kuriloff's book is essential reading for psychoanalysts and those interested in psychoanalysis, students of trauma and dissociation, and for those who ponder the construction of culture, the history of ideas, and the evolution of scientific thought.

Unforgettable

While this book is informed by a psychoanalytic perspective, it is accessible to all who are moved by the powerful secrets and silences of trauma. The narrative emerges via conversations between the author and survivors/emigres of the Shoah--eloquent, creative individuals who affected psychoanalytic thought, but really all of Western thought. These people, their children, and their children's children, illustrate the impact of history-- both global and personal-- on our sense of ourselves, and our views of one another and our world. We are reminded, once and for all, to speak to the past, so that it may teach us now. A must read.
