..."[A] welcome contribution to the field of gender and education in Africa...important for those interested in gender issues and concerned about education as a tool to empower women."
-Comparative Education Review
"The strengths of this book lie in its detailed imagery and personal portraits. I appreciated the illustrations and the location map, images to augment the dialogue in the text. The author poses many useful questions. How can such divergent views of schooling be reconciled in a community? How do community members remain loyal to national principles and curriculum even in the face of questions about the direct relevance of the curriculum? The author's honesty about her roles as researchers is refreshing, telling us how she operated both as a participant and as observer, and how she was received as an outsider, with the admonition that "a person living in a foreign place should not question everything she sees, but upon returning to her natal household, may comment all she wants..""

Courtesans and Tantric Consorts: Sexualities in Buddhist Narrative, Iconography, and Ritual, by Serinity Young

The wisest teachings of Buddhism say that, like all oppositions, one must move beyond gender. But as Serinity Young shows in this enlightening work, the rhetoric of Buddhist texts, the symbolism of its iconography, and the performative import of its rituals, tell different, and often contradictory, stories. In Courtesans and Tantric Consorts, Serinity Young takes the reader on a journey through more than 2000 years of biographical writings, iconographic depictions, and ritual practices revealing Buddhism's deep struggles with gender.
Juxtaposing empowering images of women with their textual repudiation, beginning with the Buddha himself who abandoned his wife; tantric courtesans who are considered necessary to male enlightenment with fertility rituals designed to ensure male offspring; tales of gender-bending gods and goddesses with all male heavens; Serinity Young draws on a vast range of sources to reveal the colourful, and often troubling, mosaic of beliefs that inform Buddhist views about gender and sexuality.

Review
"By considering both the textual and the art historical data, this interdisciplinary study offers us many new insights concerning both women and women's relationships to men. An erudite book that, while taking into account all of the most recent scholarship in the field, goes beyond it to offer us fresh new insights....A major contribution to the literature on women in Buddhism."
-Jose Ignacio Cabezon, XIVth Dalai Lama Professor of Tibetan Buddhism and Cultural Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara
"This book is excellent...wonderfully detailed, full of substantial narrative and anecdote and liberal in its comparisons."
-Ellison Findly, Professor of Religion and International Studies, Trinity College
"Clearly structured, lucidly written, judiciously illustrated with examples from the primary texts, and accessible to the nonspecialist...it will be an important resource for students and teachers alike."
-Eugene V. Gallager, Connecticut College
"This book is a tour de force, marshalling a broad range of materials--textual, ritual, and iconographical--to tackle a complex issue in the forefront of Buddhist studies today, that of sexuality and gender. This book is not to be missed and is a significant contribution to our understanding of the Indo-Tibetan culture of Buddism."
-Ellison Findly, Trinity College, Hartford

Thought Provoking
By Robert
Clever, insightful, well-written and though provoking.

This is an account that is somewhat wider than its title implies. It examines various categories of women (including courtesans and consorts) through the use of Buddhist texts. Young provides a pleasingly nuanced analysis of how male monastic writers have suppressed and marginalised women in the Buddhist tradition in an attempt to control and co-opt their power.

Worth reading for anyone with an interest in gender and Buddhism.

a waste of paper
By Gregory Ge
If you want to buy a book introducing you to Karmamudra, this is not the book for you. If you want to read a feminist critique of Buddhism, which seems to be the raison d'être of this book, then there are many better books out there.

Young makes an effort at criticizing Buddhism, particularly Tibetan Buddhism's view towards women. One might be tempted to criticize the very goal of this endeavor - after all, it does not seem to make much sense to use perspectives of the enlightened west to skewer the traditions of an isolated land seemingly trapped in a time capsule. However, one does not need to engage in such discourse before criticizing the book.

(1) The research is sophomoric. Young really did not bring any original research into this book, and her observations based on art history really adds little to what we already know. Reading through her rather pathetic bibliography, one sees the same names over and over again. Snellgrove seems to be her only guide in exploring karmamudra. My question is, if Snellgrove has already done such a good job, what is the point of wasting more paper (and taxpayer's money) on this new little volume? Because of the esoteric nature of the karmamudra practice, it would be nice to have some new insight, and some original research. We have quite a lot of material available in Tibetan, and it would be nice if Young can explore these materials. But, as it would become apparent to the readers very early on, she does not know the Tibetan language.

(2) The title is misleading. The title gives you the perception that this book is actually about tantric Buddhism. You will be disappointed. Only one chapter of this book deals with tantric Buddhism. Most of the materials for that chapter came either from Snellgrove's magna opus, or Dowman's book on Yeshe Tsogyel. There is really nothing original about this book.

(3) Organization is poor. The book is crudely divided into three parts, with one focused on the life of the Buddha, one on parents-children relationship, and one on sexuality in Buddhism. Since Buddhism is a large and diverse religion (one might even be tempted to call it "religions"), it is not helpful at all to criticize the entire Buddhist universe. The Mahayana's view towards women has nothing to do with the southern, or the northern Buddhist lineages.

Conclusion. This book reminds me of myself during my college days, when I would attempt to write a paper the night before it's due, and desperately try to drag myself across the final word count (while drinking copious amounts of coffee and energy drinks). The product in the end is poor. Looking back, I am ashamed of what I have written. Young should similarly be ashamed of this book.

Not Authentic and well understood representation of past
By DD
I agree with previous review by Gregory. The research paid for by several US sponsors cannot yield good conclusions as in the case of this book. Buddhism of ancient times is not easily understand by today's human minds (of 20th-21st century). Researching the materials and visiting sites and talking to experts does not make one spiritual enough to understand the background of 500BC-3AD(CE). Unless author in their previous incarnation lived in that era they wont be even able to write book on the same. Hence we should ignore such books written by amateur authors regardless of how much dollars and support that was poured in to the same.

From Publishers Weekly
In her challenging book, environmental historian Merchant (The Death of Nature) attempts to put the current ecological crisis into perspective by examining historical thoughts regarding the loss of Eden and attempts to recover it. One idea is rooted in the scientific revolution of the 17th century: this optimistic scenario asserts that Eden can be regained by re-creating the garden through suburbs, malls and bioengineered food. A more recent idea, embraced by environmentalists, simply states that the earth is in a long decline from Eden in its pristine state. Some colonists thought the New World was already an Eden. Others saw it as a land that needed to be converted into an Eden so its natural resources could be harvested as profitable commodities. In the latter scenario, the fallen Adam redeems himself by becoming the heroic American Adam who transforms nature a female object, or Eve into a fruitful garden. Merchant points out the flaws in many of these Garden of Eden narratives: the first scenario, for example, leads to a totally artificial world and ignores the fact that we can't dominate nature because it is chaotic, complex and unpredictable. Merchant proposes a new narrative in which men, women and the earth work together, giving the needs of nature equal weight with the needs of humans. Unfortunately, her proposals for cooperation between corporations, communities, government agencies and environmental groups are not original. Coming after her penetrating treatment of the historical narratives, this part of the book is disappointing. Yet she covers a wealth of information and sheds light on the thinking of generations of scientists, philosophers and environmentalists. Illus. not seen by PW.

Review
[Merchant] covers a wealth of information and sheds light on the thinking of generations of scientists, philosophers, and environmentalists. -- Publishers Weekly
Fascinating and enjoyable reading. Merchant provides a richly documented analysis of the shifting rationales for dominating, degrading and reinventing the natural world. -- Devra Davis, author of When Smoke Ran Like Water: Tales of Environmental Deception and the Battle Against Pollution
In an age dominated by violence, conflict, disharmony, and terror, Reinventing Eden offers an alternative to 'either you're with us or you're our enemy' logic and could help create harmony out of disharmony, a peaceful order out of violent chaos. A timely book for our troubled times and troubled thinking. -- Vandana Shiva, author of Water Wars: Privatization, Pollution, and Profit
Intelligent, passionate, clearly written (and thus excellent for teaching) and challenging, they make powerful contributions to understanding both The Mess We're In and the ways in which we've thought about that mess. Carolyn Merchant is one of the world's most important environmental thinkers...This is a visionary book of intellectual history and ethics. -- Roger S. Gottlieb, Worcester Polytechnic Institute
Merchant leads the reader away from the linear desert of the Enlightenment into the lush narrative complexity of an ecological Promised Land, where chaos theory ensures that humans will be partners with Nature. -- Technology and Culture
Carolyn Merchant has made another important contribution to our understanding of Western civilization and American culture...an amply researched, well written, closely reasoned study that belongs on the shelf of every Americanist
. -- Paul W. Rea, St. Mary's College of California, SLE
It remains a very useful introduction to this interdisciplinary, critical practice that encourages visual literacy. -- Angela Dietz, Saint Louis University

About the Author
Carolyn Merchant is Chancellor's Professor of Environmental History, Philosophy, and Ethics at the University of California, Berkeley. She is the current president of the American Society of Environmental History. She is also the author of Radical Ecology and Earthcare (both published by Routledge).

This book bites
By Fogline
Reinventing Eden is pure environmental dribble. I agree with a previous review the book could have been at least a hundred pages shorter. If you like to draw your own conlusions don't read this book because the author is more than happy to insert her own conclusions.

The search of Eden has led to an erosion of nature
By Midwest Book Review
The "Garden Of Eden" was a paradise lost, and mankind has spent centuries searching for it. Reinventing Eden reveals how the image and myth of Eden has actually led to further degradation of the planet, revealing its origins, its influence on political and social thought, and related issues concerning man and nature. Human manipulation of the environment in search of Eden has led to an erosion of nature: Reinventing Eden documents exactly how.

No Resolution
By Tommy Turpolene
This book is an exposition of two contrasting forms of reclaiming Eden, one through restoring Nature, the other through creating a technological Eden. I agree with Amazon's review from Publishers Weekly. The final chapter is flawed, but to see why, we need to go back to Merchant's other work, one that leads to this one: The Death of Nature. Here she shows the history of the transformation of the European view of Nature from organic to mechanistic. Her view in both of these books is predominantly mechanistic. This is because that a partnership ethic is mechanistic rather than holistic. You cannot have a partnership between a part and the whole. The farthest one can go in that direction is, perhaps, to be a "team player". This book is better for those who are following Merchant's work than as general reading. Merchant has a generally linear view of history with "infinite" possibilities. If we allow a cyclical view of time, the whole book can be seen in a different light.

Puberty, Sexuality and the Self: Girls and Boys at Adolescence (Politics of Language), by Karin Martin

Puberty, Sexuality and the Self considers the effects of puberty and teenage sexuality on adolescents. By analyzing interviews with 55 teenagers, Karin Martin finds that girls' self-esteem drops significantly more than boys' does at adolescence. While this finding is supported by previous studies, Martin picks up where these earlier studies leave off by focusing on girls' development and considering different experiences of puberty and sex as an explanation for girls' greater drop in self-esteem.

Puberty, Sexuality and the Self examines voice change, breast development, shaving, expectations of sex, the decision to have sex, experiences of sex and how boys and girls manage their emotions and selves throughout all of these new experiences. Comparing boys and girls at adolescence, Martin takes a qualitative look at puberty and sexuality, supporting her theory in the words of the adolescents themselves.

Furnishing the Eighteenth Century: What Furniture Can Tell Us about the European and American PastFrom Routledge

Furnishing the Eighteenth Century provides an illuminating, interdisciplinary look into European and American furniture during the century that connoisseurs and collectors consider its golden age. Lavishly illustrated, this lively collection of essays by historians, art historians, and literary scholars examines the ways furniture of this period reflects the global contacts and social rituals developed in eighteenth-century Europe and America.   Drawing on literature, painting, account books and death inventories, this diverse compilation explores how and why eighteenth-century men and women on both sides of the Atlantic purchased and used furniture. Ultimately, these essays make the past come alive, showing us what made desks, tables and chairs deeply meaningful in their own time and historically informative today.

Review

"The twelve essays that constitute this collection provide ample new, thoughtful, and frequently surprising revelations about what eighteenth-century furniture said to a broad range of makers, users, and audiences." – Enfilade, newsletter for Historians of Eighteenth-Century Art and Architecture

"There have been few attempts to make the history of furniture above all a form of cultural and social history ... all of these essays add to our stock of knowledge about furniture's importance." – H-France review

"This book contains meticulous archival scholarship in abundance, attention to detail in a series of wonderful close observations, but most of all, in individual essays and as a project as a whole, a wonderful panorama of the imaginative routes taken by recent scholarship on the decorative arts. At many points I was both inspired by the imaginative range and humbled by the work rate of cultural historians of the decorative, enough to shame us complacent historians of the two-dimensional image. The answer to the skeptic’s question, 'Can the settee speak?' is, on the basis of the work presented in this volume, a resounding yes." – Mark Ledbury, Eighteenth-Century Life

"The book would make a really interesting addition to any design-related library, especially for a reader who appreciates in-depth essays." – Style Court blog: www.stylecourt.blogspot.com

Very Comprehensive
By ONG EU JIN
This atlas is very comprehensive and contains colour maps showing the religious composition of the various regions of the United States from the pre-colonial days down to the present.
The atlas is also very useful for those who are interested in the emigration of the various ethnic groups to America as religious affiliation is closely tied to ethnicity and country/area of origin (especially in the colonial period to the 1800s).

It can be observed from these maps that different ethnic groups arrived during different periods and that their settlement were concentrated in specific regions.
For the period before independence (ie. 1776), there are maps showing the emigration of the Puritans/Congregationalists from the counties of Eastern England to New England, the Anglicans to Virginia and other Southern states along the Atlantic coast, Northern English and Welsh Quakers to Pennsylvania, Scotch-Irish Presbyterians to the Middles colonies and thereafter, onwards to the backcountry. There were also the Dutch Reformed (and some French Huguenot) in New York who settled there when that state belonged to Holland, and the Lutherans, Reformed and Mennonites who emigrated from Germany to the Middle colonies. Meanwhile, Louisiana was mainly Catholic due to French and some Spanish settlers.
A phenomenon which I found interesting was the transformation of denominational affiliation in the Southern states from Anglicanism and Presbyterianism to Baptist (and Methodist)and later, the emergence of Unitarians and Universalist among the Yankees in New England. All these showed regional trends.
This religious affiliation can be traced as migrants moved Westwards from the original colonies. Hence, the Yankees brought with them Congregationalism to the Midwest whilst Texas, Arkansas etc. had large Baptist and Methodist groups due to settlers from other Southern states.
In the 1800s, one can see how America was transformed from an almost exclusively Protestant Anglo-Saxon/Western European civilisation with the immigration of Catholics from Ireland, Germany and continental Europe. Orthodox imigrants form Eastern Europe in the late 1800s to early 1900s added even greater to the diversity.
And of course, in the late 20th century, America became a microcosm of the world with immigrants from Asia, Africa etc. [with large numbers of Buddhists (of various sects), Hindus, Bahais, Sikhs and Muslims (who enjoyed a phenomenal growth in part due to the large-scale conversions among African-Americans)].
This atlas also has maps showing the religious transformation in the African-American community i.e. from having their own Methodist and Baptist denominations to the formation of Black Hebrew organisations and the Nation of Islam and quasi-Muslim sects (such as Moorish Science).
The last few maps showed that despite the change in ethnic composition over the years, the various regions are still unique in their concentration of various denominations.

Helpful illustrations but poor editing
By Matthew Hisrich
The graphics in this text provide a useful visual supplement to standard books on U.S. religious history. Unfortunately, the text is filled with distracting errors - misspellings, incomplete sentences that end abruptly, and times where it seems the text was patched together without checking to make sure the result made any sense. A revised version is definitely called for, but until then this still remains a worthwhile purchase for its combination of helpful content and low cost.

Provides a focus on the history and geographic development
By Midwest Book Review
Brett Carroll's Historical Atlas of Religion in America provides a focus on the history and geographic development of American religions, providing maps and visual details to bring alive the connections between American political and religious history. From parts played by religious groups of Europe to the development of sects in the country, this provided a well-rounded survey.
