Daniel C. Hellinger is Professor of Political Science and Director of the International Relations program at Webster University, St. Louis, Missouri. He has published numerous scholarly articles and books on Latin American politics, is past president of the Venezuelan Studies Section of the Latin American Studies Association, serves as a Participating Editor for Latin American Perspectives, serves on the advisory board for the Washington based Center for Democracy, and regularly comments on Latin American politics for the InterAmerican Dialogue’s Latin American Advisor.

the complete history of Latin America is inside!!

I was required to read this book as course requirement. The author himself was my professor of this course. The book is very detailed and full of names and dates. It gives you a complete idea about the history of Latin America. Even though the book is rich with heavy information i enjoyed reading it.

great practical manual

I have purchased many therapy books which would be presented as practical manuals only to get quickly lost in theory, thus leaving the reader wondering how this technique is actually supposed to be implemented in clinical practice. This book, on the other hand, is exactly what it is presented as, that is, a practical manual for sand therapy. The authors make it clear that this book by itself is far from providing training for the implementation of sand therapy, said this, the books provides a great introduction to the subject of sand therapy by giving a down to earth review of how sand therapy can be integrated in clinical practice. Given the very reasonable price of this book and the remarkable quality of the manual I would highly recommend it to clinicians who are starting to look into applying sand therapy or that just want a fresh outlook on the subject.

This book is amazing! The information is concise, accurate, descriptive, and easy to understand and apply. I am on a journey to learn more about Sandplay Therapy which differs from Sandtray therapy; however, this book has really helped me to further grasp and respect the fundamental differences between the two approaches and techniques used. I love the this manual offers a shopping list for the beginner therapist, a vast amount of case studies, many pictures of actual client trays, and descriptive and in-depth explanations and examples of various approaches you can use with this technique. Whether you are a Jungian or CBT or any kind of helping person (who practice with a theoretical approach)interested in helping more people overcome trauma, abuse, or other hurt(s) & pain BUY THIS BOOK! You will learn so much and have a better sense of how to apply it for the hurting people in your practice. I know you will enjoy exploring this technique with this book! Enjoy your growth spurt!

Here she defines fundamentalism as "orthodoxy in confrontation with modernity," making it broadly applicable not just to Christianity but to other religions as well. Nearly 200 entries by 100 anthropologists, historians, sociologists, and religious scholars cover the full range of fundamentalism, from definition, history, and beliefs to movements and churches, significant individuals, and expressions in various world religions. Creationism, fascism, rock music, and the Taliban are a sample of the topics covered. Part of Routledge's Religion and Society series of reference sources that cover various aspects of religious experience from a cross-cultural perspective, this encyclopedia discusses and analyzes the concept of fundamentalism in American Protestant Christianity and other religious traditions and cultures.

In her introduction, editor Brasher treats fundamentalism primarily as "a widespread, populist, socio-economic movement that emerged in twentieth-century Christian Protestantism." But she defines the scope of this encyclopedia broadly, noting that the term fundamentalism can be applied to movements within different religious traditions. "These movements," Brasher states, "attempted to blockade religious authority from most, if not all, outside critique, and fence off adherents from the influence of contemporary culture beyond their religion."

The clearly written, alphabetically arranged entries range in length from one to seven pages, and each ends with an author byline and a short bibliography. Some of the longer articles also include sidebars with textual excerpts from documents related to the topic of the entry. There are a few marginally relevant black-and-white photos interspersed throughout the book. Entry topics include major fundamentalist movements and sects (there are long entries on Catholic, Hindu, Islamic, and Jewish fundamentalism but none on Buddhist or Confucian Fundamentalism); significant creeds (Creationism, Cult of Mary, Westminster Confession); historical events (Azusa Street Revival, Great Awakening) ; and social and political issues that are important to fundamentalists (Abortion, Antifeminism, Militia). Biographical information on key figures in the history of fundamentalism is interwoven into the text of many of the entries.

Entries such as Bible study, Evil, Free will, Miracles, Prophecy, and Sin and sinners are exclusively or mostly discussed in a Protestant fundamentalist context. Information in entries dealing with topics related to Judaism is sometimes set in a Christian context, for example, the Hebrew Bible is called the "Old Testament," the Western Wall is called the "Wailing Wall," and an entry on Elohim (one of the words for God used in the Hebrew Bible) discusses its interpretation by Christian fundamentalists but not their Jewish counterparts.

Although most elements of this encyclopedia are covered adequately in a combination of other broader reference works (e.g., Encyclopedia of Religion [Macmillan, 1995] and Encyclopedia of American Social History [Macmillan, 1993]) the Encyclopedia of Fundamentalism provides the most comprehensive and accurate coverage of Protestant Fundamentalism; its entries of non-Protestant Fundamentalism are less complete. Fundamentalist Christians use the Bible as their "Encyclopedia". They have open minds to new ways of looking at things, as long as the proposal is accompanied by a contextual look at relevant scripture.

I can't speak for anyone else's religion, and neither should the author. It's significant this was published in September 2001...

Political Philosophy and the question of black existence

Sylvia Wynter has said that it is the challenge of the writer to create new "forms of life." Lewis R. Gordon has done just that with "Existentia Africana." With chapters such as "Can Men Worship?", "'What Does It Mean to be a Problem'?", and one of the most moving sections, "Writing: Words and Incantation", Gordon pours out his soul in trying to explain to the reader why in the year 2000 black people in Africa and the African Diaspora are still regarded as problem people. The author is a writer, philosopher par excellance, a jazz musician, a product of both Jamaica and black America, the academy and the realm of grassroots political activity. Discussing persons such as Frantz Fanon to Angela Davis to Jean-Paul Sartre to W.E.B.Du Bois to Naomi Zack to Josiah Young to Abbey Lincoln and to others, Gordon's words and incantation force the reader to confront the meaning of black existence from Jamaica to the United States to the UK to Africa to aboriginal Australia. Gordon differentiates between the European movement of thought "Existentialism", versus what he terms a "Philosophy of Existence/Existential Philosophy." A Philosophy of Existence addresses issues of freedom, anguish, dread, and responsibility in a way that does not limit discourse to European thought and thikers such as Sartre, Heidegger, Jaspers, and Simone de Beauvoir. Dear reader, please read on if you are willing to confront these serious and pressing issues of our times.

Scholarship as its best...

If you are at the least familiar with Prof. Gordon's work, then you should need no prompting in purchasing this text. If not, then I wholeheartedly recommened "Existentia Africana" for anyone with an interest in race theorizing along existential lines. Gordon draws influences from such existential theorists as Frantz Fanon, W.E.B. DuBois, Jean-Paul Sartre, and bell hooks to paint a very coherent and useful picture of modern Africana existential thought. Buy it, and read it, you won't be dissappointed.
