Thought-provoking for the layperson and the bioethicist

The funny thing about the mid-20th century philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein is that it's nigh on impossible to understand what he means if one just readd his Philosophical Investigations (PI)... yet when Elliott applies Wittgenstein's PI to issues in medicine, it becomes possible to see why Wittgenstein is considered such a revolutionary figure.
One of the excellent things about this work is that Elliott, himself, is so clearly fascinated by the subjects he delves into that his enthusiasm is infectious. The book is thus quite engaging. It helps that Elliott uses familiar references. For example, in Chapter 2, "You Are What You Are Afflicted By", Elliott deals with how it is that the way we label ourselves (particularly when we have been diagnosed with a disease) constructs our identities. One of his epigraphs at the beginning of the chapter is a quote from Casablanca... Major Strasser: What is your nationality; Rick: I'm a drunkard. Elliott then proceeds to apply Maggie Little, Art Frank, Wittgenstein, and anthropologist Clifford Geertz to the matter of identity and disease, with particular reference to deafness and intersex (children who are born neither clearly male nor clearly female).
This sort of connection between the mundane/real and elegant philosophy persists throughout. Who can fault an author who uses the Talking Heads to introduce a chapter that tackles the philosophically tricky issue of how the use of Prozac affects our very sense of self, and our relation to social problems?

Dr. Elliott raises awareness about some very socially significant points. The issues raised range in topic from bioethics, language, and psychology. It is very nicely written; he presents his points very logically. A great philosophy book.

About the Author

Brenda Berger, Ph.D., is Clinical Assistant Professor of Medical Psychology in Psychiatry at Columbia University and on the faculty at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, where she serves as Senior Associate Director for Psychology and Director of the Psychology Externship training program. The author of the Parent Development Interview as well as several articles, she received a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and the Lionel Ovesey Award of the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research for developing a psychodynamic teaching program. Dr. Berger practices in New York City and Larchmont, NY.

Stephanie Newman, Ph.D., is a faculty member of the Institute for Psychoanalytic Education affiliated with the New York University School of Medicine. She has presented numerous times on diverse topics in psychoanalysis at the Scientific Meetings of the American Psychoanalytic Association, as well as the American Psychological Association and APA Division 39 (Psychoanalysis). With full disclosure as a colleague and friend of one of this book's editors, I cannot resist recommending this volume to therapists and anyone else interested in the intersection of finance, psychology and culture. It is a highly accessible collection of well-written, sophisticated and above all, honest essays about the role and meaning of money in our lives. The case histories are emotionally compelling, the conclusions dramatic, and the theoretical questions thought provoking. While much of the drama is viewed through the lens of the therapeutic encounter, the wide range of subjects covered, including the role of money in marriages, everyday morality, adolescent development, love, hate, greed and envy, will appeal to any reader. Finally, given the global financial crisis and its radical consequences worldwide, this is an extremely timely addition to our understanding of what money is all about.

And finally, in "Opening Scores," she considers how films such as Dangerous Minds, The Substitute, Mississippi Masala and Corrina, Corrina bring together several different entry points of identification through their scores.

About the Author

She coedited the book Keeping Score: Music, Disciplinarity, Culture (1997) and has written numerous articles and book chapters on popular music, film music and feminist theory.

About the Author

Layli Maparyan is Associate Professor of Women’s Studies and Associated Faculty of African American Studies at Georgia State University. In 2006 (as Layli Phillips), she published The Womanist Reader, an anthology documenting the first quarter century of womanist thought from an interdisciplinary perspective. Since 2006, she has worked collaboratively with the University of Liberia to develop its inaugural Gender Studies Program, serving as a Fulbright Specialist in 2010. In 2009, she was awarded a Contemplative Practice Fellowship by the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society to study and teach womanist spiritual activism internationally.
