About the Author

Chloë Taylor is an assistant professor of philosophy at the University of Alberta. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Toronto and a postdoctoral fellowship from McGill University. Professor Taylor has published articles in journals such as Philosophy Today, Postmodern Culture and the Journal of Modern Literature. She is currently working on a book on Foucault and sex crimes, as well as undertaking research on animal ethics, feminism, and literature.

Not only for "academics"

Written in a highly accessible way, i found this book a pleasure to read. Taylor very clearly and concisely covered a lot of history and theory in her book, which was great, because it then made it easy to take those ideas and find contemporary manifestations of confessional culture that might exist in one's life. I would definitely recommend this book, especially if you enjoy Foucault, feminism, identity politics, or are interested in the practice of confession from antiquity to modernity.

About the Author

Priscilla B. Hayner co-founded the International Center for Transitional Justice and served as program director and director of its Geneva office. She has advised truth commissions in well over a dozen countries, working with the United Nations, the Ford Foundation, and others, and has been featured in Newsweek, the New York Times, the Christian Science Monitor, and Le Temps. She is currently writing on the subject of justice in peace negotiations.

The Margins of Truth

Priscilla Hayner is, very likely, the world's most expert writer on 'truth commissions'. This book is a follow-up on the article '15 Truth Commissions', published in the Human Rights Quarterly, which was the first systematic review of the issue up to the mid-1990s. This book deals with dozens of examples up to 1999. Hayner describes how truth commissions are being established.How they operate under very different mandates, e.g. on presidential order, by parliamentary decision, under U.N. auspices, or as a judicial commission of enquiry. How some commissions deal with a large pattern of abuses, such as in Soutth Africa, and others have been concerned with selected violations only, such as the 'disappearances' which were the subject matter of the Argentine commission. How these commissions report, or do not report, on their findings. How commissions are concerned with, or show less than the necessary concern for, the victims. Much of Hayners observations are based on interviews with those directly involved in these commissions. The book has a couple of very useful appendices, where one can compare the mandate, membership, dates, operations, findings, and other characteristics. A few points of criticism are due too. Hayner's book may be the first of its scope, but it is not really, contrary to what is said in the Introduction, the first on the subject. A more serious point is that Hayner deals with these commissions rather as a standard concept. In fact, the commissions have shown wide divergencies and quite a few, if not the majority, may after all be considered less than an outright success. Hayner's optimism about future commissions may be somewhat misleading. It seems at present not at all sure that there is a sound future for truth commissions, the more so as the issue of national and international trials for those responsible has gained prominence in recent years.

"The" Reference, Applies to 9-11 and USA Truth Commissions

The publisher has been lazy and inconsiderate in failing to post adequate information about this superb book. It is without question the single most important reference, covering the theory, the history, the practice, and future of truth commissions. It is comprehensive, clear, easy to read, and superbly documented.

This book has special meaning for me, at the #1 Amazon reviewer for non-fiction about global issues and national security and prosperity issues, because on the basis of real-life experience and reinforced by the 600+ books I have reviewed in just the past four years, I have become convinced that the US public must demand two Truth & Reconciliation Commissions if we are to reach the next century in any kind of good order: one must focus on the ills that America has bestowed on the world through its Cold War years (see Derek Leebaert, The Fifty-Year Wound: How America's Cold War Victory Has Shaped Our World as well as--among many others--Chalmers Johnson, The Sorrows of Empire: Militarism, Secrecy, and the End of the Republic (The American Empire Project), its support of 44+ dictators world-wide (see Ambassador Mark Palmer's Breaking the Real Axis of Evil: How to Oust the World's Last Dictators by 2025), and our predatory immoral capitalism (Cf. Perkins Confessions of an Economic Hit Man' Greider The Soul of Capitalism: Opening Paths to a Moral Economy and Prestowitz, Rogue Nation: American Unilateralism and the Failure of Good Intentions.

EDIT of 11 Dec 07: There are *so* many other books I have reviewed that could be listed here. The sad thing is that in 8 years Bush-Cheney, with the total abdication of Congress and the media, have led an apathetic nation into ruin.

We also need an internal Truth & Reconciliation Commission that could usefully start with the treasonous, treacherous, immoral, and disgraceful failure of local, state, and federal government in the preparation for and response to Hurricane Katrina, and go backwards from there to explore not only our abuse of minorities, but our abuse of the working poor (see Ehrenreich, Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America David Shipler, The Working Poor: Invisible in America and then go from there to the pernicious deliberate looting of the Commonwealth by a combination of military-industrial, pharmaceutical, and energy special interests; corrupt Congressmen, and a Wall Street that thrives on laundering drug money and picking the pockets of the middle class (Cf . Michael Ruppert, Crossing the Rubicon: The Decline of the American Empire at the End of the Age of Oil)

Most interesting to me, although not mentioned in this book, if one Goggles for truth and reconciliation USA one discoveres the Greensboro North Carolina Truth and Reconciliation endeavor, to explore past human rights abuses through slavery and related themes. This is a proven process that is clearly relevant to all countries, and especially to the 900-lb gorilla called America. The growing gap between rich and poor is the moral equivalent of global genocide and ecocide. If the rich wish to see their future generations survive, they had better start thinking about this important alternative to popular justice.

It is in this very American context that we can conclude that not only is this book at least as important to every American as it is to the rest of the world, but that the 9-11 Commission was a cover-up, a farce, that failed to engage the people, failed to discover all that could be known, and failed to hold anyone accountable.

I am most impressed by the diligence, scope, and coherence of this book. This is an extraordinary examination, based on global travel, deep research, and penetrating personal insight that is graceful and low-key, into the role of truth commissions, the great difficulties that accompany the creation and maintenance of such commissions, and the long-term implications of a successful outcome.

On page 23, after discussing the new emerging field of "transitional justice" the author declares that it "is certain that more countries will be turning to official truth-seeking in the coming years." As we review books like Jonathan Schell's The Unconquerable World: Power, Nonviolence, and the Will of the People and Why They Hate Us: September 11, 2001...and Justice For Non and many others, two things are clear: 1) the dictators are not long for this world--I give them twelve years at the most; and 2) it is not just "dictatorships" that need commissions, but also those democracies that are fraudulent, among which I would include the United States of America (see my review of Jimmy Carter's new book, and the books recommended there, including Peter Peterson's Running on Empty: How the Democratic and Republican Parties Are Bankrupting Our Future and What Americans Can Do About It).

The author is to be commended for blending a reference work that concisely and clearly covers the 21 existing truth commissions at the time of the first writing as well as the 12 emergent between the hard copy and the new soft copy, and that brings out the reasons, the lessons, the benefits, and the costs. Readable truths

This is fascinating. This very important topic could have made for boring reading, but the author (who obviously knows the subject thoroughly and first hand) has made it quite interesting. This book will never be outdated, as it covers past events that bring to mind so many things that are going on today and, unfortunately, will be tomorrow as well. (I wonder when a truth commission will be set up for Iraq.) Authoritative yet simply worded, the book is for anyone and everyone who cares anything about the world outside the box.

Well written, diverse and interesting

My primary area of interest is film music, so this is the first book I have read in the area of television music. But like the other Routledge Screen Media Series book I've read, this one is well researched, covers a variety of specific topics in the genre by various authors, and is well written. I plan to include a unit on Television Music in my Film Music and Music Appreciation courses and this book will lend good support to that effort.

In recent years politicians have bemoaned the state of popular culture. Occasionally, they extend their critique of the entertainment industry to the new field of cultural studies, which typically celebrates pop culture's "subversive" qualities. But not everyone involved in the cultural studies movement favors today's popular culture. Distinguished author Giroux (education, Pennsylvania State Univ.) also finds much to criticize about contemporary culture. His focus here is on violence in the media. "Serious films have given way to the blockbuster," he complains, "and the tradeoff has been an increase in the number of violent films shown in movie theaters across the United States." In this context he looks at representations of blacks in the media, the growing power of talk radio, and the world view of the Disney Corporation. Giroux is particularly critical of Quentin Tarantino's films, asserting that the director "produces a racially coded, reactionary cultural politics and pedagogy that transforms neo-conservative callousness and contempt for the underclass into a hip representation of avant-garde high art." Giroux's thought-provoking approach is recommended for general and academic libraries.

a passionate defense of youth--and academe

In Fugitive Cultures: Race, Violence and Youth, Henry A. Giroux subjects media representations of youth to penetrating critique, placing himself squarely on the side of youth. He perceives youth as doubly disadvantaged: demonized in popular culture, and caught between "American dreams" of a better life and the reality of a declining economy (12). Authority and legitimation have been taken away from the institutions of family, school and workplace, and accorded to the electronic media discourses.
Giroux faults the schools and the discipline of education for refusing "to deal with the teacherly influence and pleasures of popular culture" (14). He advocates cultural studies as a platform for the study of "youth problems," since it "has never reduced education to the study of schooling." This last-mentioned quality is one of great promise, I believe, for the study of marginalized sub-cultures (as in my prospective research): it is impossible within the hegemony of formal institutions to obtain a somewhat comprehensive view of the modalities in which self-identification takes place for members of subcultures.

This book looks at the negative images - violent, irresponsible, etc.- which the media use to portray youth while ignoring the social conditions that produce real hardship for many young people.Giroux shows that youth are increasingly becoming the scapegoat for problems caused by an unjust and repressive society.Also discussed is the insidious Disneyfication of America and the use of talk radio by right wing demagogs.It is a hard hitting expose of some very disturbing trends in the modern media.

Very Fine Book on Student Community-Based Projects

A vital component of our Humanities I in Action curriculum at Hong Kong International School are Personal Action Projects, which students take on in groups in which they attempt to remedy some social concern on campus or in the community. Oyler's book, which follows teachers from primary to graduate school, is an excellent guide to consider many questions that are raised when initiating these kinds of projects, such as:

* How can teachers organize action without telling students what to think or what to do?
* How can teachers balance student-focused, project-based lessons without neglecting necessary content and background knowledge?
* How can teachers develop the affective dimension of student community activism?
* How can teachers balance activism with consideration of multiple perspectives?

Not only are the issues discussed intelligently, balancing insights from relevant literature with on-the-ground case studies of teachers implementing projects in the classroom, but the narrative style which integrates scholarship, pedagogy, and activism should appeal to a diverse range of readers.

Culture is all around us: television, video games, Shakespeare, advertisements, books, musical recordings, news reports, even the packaging of food items. The pervasiveness of culture, however, is matched by the pervasiveness of anxiety about our position in it: Who are we? What are we? According to Marjorie Garber, one of America's most astute and imaginative social commentators, culture and anxiety are so intertwined as to be inseparable.

We are, Garber argues, what we consume culturally--even if it doesn't always agree with us. Garber's approach to culture is eclectic: she veers from Charlotte's Web to Jell-O boxes, from Sir Laurence Olivier's bisexuality to the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas hearings. Yet her aim remains unwavering throughout. Far more interested in what a piece of culture "means" than in discussing "good" and "bad" culture, she sifts and sorts through the artifacts of everyday life attempting to find meaning and sense in the midst of chaos.

PC Bigotry at its most arbitrary

I was required to read this book for a graduate course. As a symptom of what is wrong with American (and Western) culture, it does a good job of exemplifying the absurdity and bigotry of the psuedo-intellectual left. If one approaches it as a scholarly appraisal of Western culture, one will be seriously mis-led.
Garber assumes, in the introduction, that Fruedianism is an authoritative hermeneutical tool for literature and culture generally. One would normally expect a scholar to demonstrate why s/he believes in a certain system of ideas. But apparently Garber approaches Frued the same way a fundamentalist approaches the Bible: Freud said it, I believe it, that settles it. That abitrary approach permeates the entire book -- confirming the worst of what one has heard about the debased (and intollerantly leftist) nature of today's English departments. Later she appeals for tolerance for Jews wearing their caps during sporting events and damns evangelical Christians for praying in public after they score touch-downs. Guess what? She's Jewish. Shakespeare, she says, is a "fetish" and "Charlotte's Web" is a work of comparable literary value. And on and on she goes. This book should be preserved if only to demonstrate how intolerant and debased the academic "left" became in the late 20th century.

May or may not be your cup of tea

I suspect this book might be hit and miss. I found it to be beyond brilliant: witty, erudite, well-researched, and playful, Garber writes the perfect antidote to scholarly conservatism, traditionalism, and stuffiness. The first essay, "Greatness," is a free-associating tour de force that not only perfectly puts her theoretical framework to work (go Freud!), but also reminds us that even those who argue against "ideology" and "politics" work through and with them, whether or not (and especially if they don't) acknowledge it. People who are still comfortably attached to orthodox scholarly beliefs will find this book to be too eccentric and perhaps even evil; the Lynne Cheneys and Camille Paglias of the world must burst into flames at the mere mention of Garber's name. Even those who agree with Garber's politics might find her method of analysis too labyrinthine and airy. I found the method refreshing. (And at least she warns us of it in the beginning.) Overall, the book reminds us that the methods of close reading and the psychoanalytic interpretation of dreams can (and must) be applied to the world around us, reminds us of the importance of reading against the grain, reading between the lines, always questioning and critiquing that which society presents to us as given, inherent, assumed, decontextualized, "real" and "great."
