"An Eye-Opener"
By Richard
I stumbled upon this book by accident (no Freudian slip intended) but decided to buy it because lesbian/gay people/issues are so much a part of the fabric of American life in the 21st Century. The book is a collection of interdisciplinary essays and therefore provides a diversified approach to Freud's case study and work in this area that can be applied to gay issues in the news today, ranging from the Supreme Court's Boy/Girl Scout decision to Dick Cheyney's evolving attitude towards his gay daughter. Because the essayists are from different fields, I found this book to be a real eye-opener into the world of female homosexuality. I totally recommend the book to anyone who would like to read a thoughtful, innovative collection of essays on this subject. The book gave me a lot to think about, which in my view is the highest accolade.

A cogent, compelling collection of essays edited with a keen ear for the nuance and power of its distinct viewpoint. In the life or not, in the field or not, the book launches you on a provocative odyssey, jammed packed with rich opportunities for re-examination and re-evaluation of Freud's theories of female sexuality. Very worthwhile.

Good book, overpriced.
By W. Youngblood
(Note: Have not yet finished all sections of the book.) I am new to the study of Roman history and historiography. This is a good intro, but one would definitely need follow-up to really flush out the work of any single historian. (OK, it's an anthology.) The section on Caesar was thin, I felt, and does not really convey why he is regarded as a great Roman thinker. Still, Mellor's input as editor is very helpful, insightful, a good basic guide. But why on earth does this text cost $30?!! (as a paperback?!) What kind of racket is academic publishing!

Japanese Horror Films and their American Remakes (Routledge Advances in Film Studies), by Valerie Wee

The Ring (2002)―Hollywood’s remake of the Japanese cult success Ringu (1998)―marked the beginning of a significant trend in the late 1990s and early 2000s of American adaptations of Asian horror films. This book explores this complex process of adaptation, paying particular attention to the various transformations that occur when texts cross cultural boundaries. Through close readings of a range of Japanese horror films and their Hollywood remakes, this study addresses the social, cultural, aesthetic and generic features of each national cinema’s approach to and representation of horror, within the subgenre of the ghost story, tracing convergences and divergences in the films’ narrative trajectories, aesthetic style, thematic focus and ideological content. In comparing contemporary Japanese horror films with their American adaptations, this book advances existing studies of both the Japanese and American cinematic traditions, by:

  • illustrating the ways in which each tradition responds to developments in its social, cultural and ideological milieu; and,

  • examining Japanese horror films and their American remakes through a lens that highlights cross-cultural exchange and bilateral influence.

The book will be of interest to scholars of film, media, and cultural studies.

Review
'The American adaptation of the sensationally popular Japanese horror film Ringu (1998)--released in English as The Ring (2002)--started a trend of Hollywood remakes of Asian horror film.  Wee (National Univ. of Singapore) uses  this trend to analyze cross-cultural adaptation and intercultural influence between Hollywood's and Japan's representations of horror.  Wee explores how the values and ideologies expressed in Japanese horror films are altered or rejected in the American adaptation--and how these changes reflect either differing or similar value systems and cultural beliefs.  In the introduction and the first two of seven chapters, the author establishes historical context and provides an analytical framework for the text.  Subsequent chapters focus on specific themes--visual aesthetics of horror; single mothers and abandoned daughters; apocalyptic visions; and (post)modern anxieties--contrasting a specific J-horror film with its American remake.  The result of this type of analysis, according to Wee, is broader understanding not only of social anxieties of a specific period, as reflected in horror films, but also of shifts in a sociocultural environment over time.  Summing Up: Recommended.  Upper-division  undergraduates through faculty.'

Review
The kind of book that should be in every Student Affairs and Resident Assistant's (RA's) office. If you are working with young men and women and want to or are mandated to develop a prevention program, The Men's and Women's Program is a book that is highly recommended to help you begin.  Lois A. Carey, Molloy College, Social Work with Groups,

"No other publications provide the explicit language to enable youth to work toward ending sexual violence and be assured that their interventions among their peers are meaningful, research-based, and lasting. A charged, emotional topic is voiced in a way that engages both those who offer and those who experience these sexual assault survivor programs." - Charles G. Eberly, PhD, Professor of Counseling and Student Development, Eastern Illinois University and Past President, Center for the Study of the College Fraternity

"As a speaker on sexual assault, depression, and suicide, I have long been an admirer of John Foubert. This book is a must for anyone that works in the sexual assault field and is interested in using a unique, successful, research based program for men and women. I am particularly impressed with The Women’s Program. I have seen nothing like this available." - Andrea Fuller Cooper, Kristin’s Story, LLC

"Dr. Foubert has outdone himself. This book is a must-have for peer educators, student service personnel, and any professional committed to preventing or addressing sexual violence. The level of detail and clarity is unparalleled, while the inclusion of specific scripts for conducting both men's and women's programming ensures positive outcomes. This book demonstrates why Dr. Foubert is considered a leader in this field." - Keith L. Kaufman, Professor of Psychology, Portland State University

"...a user-friendly, "how-to" text that focuses on the use of peer educators to address the complex and sensitive issues of rape prevention. It is the kind of book that should be in every Student Affairs and Resident Assistant's office and bookshelf...Although discussion focusing on rape frequenly leave audiences uncomfortable, frightened, defensive, and/or silent, the creative ideas used in this program enable the peer educators to establish rapport with participants by creating victim empathy within a context of how to help a sexual assault survivor...If you are working with young men and women and want to or are mandated to develop a prevention program, The Men's and Women's Program is a book that is highly recommmended to help you begin." - Lois A. Carey, Social Work with Groups

Fantastic Resource!
By MBrosi
This book is a fantastic resource for any professional working in the field of preventing sexual violence. It is very well written and presented in such a manner that allows novice presenters an opportunity to quickly step in and begin presenting information to the public. This program was chosen at my institution due to its empirical validity and years of success within the academic community. Nice job Dr. Foubert!

Comprehensive State of the Art Rape Prevention Peer Education Program
By Tom Segar
Dr. Foubert has written a comprehensive volume with abundant resources for any educational institution, organization, or group seeking to create a state of the art rape prevention peer education program for men and women. More than a how-to-book, this resource is empirically grounded and time-tested.

Not worth much.
By B. Bauer
This book has a LOT of repetition. The Men's Program is identical to the Women's Program except for changing the gender. The Military section is identical to other material in the book. Also, not clear in the ordering information, it is necessary to order the DVD to run the training. Not helpful since I work in an area of Northern Uganda where there is no electricity. I would't advise this book at all. There was very little content I could use.

Review
A beautiful, moving book about the way in which poor young pregnant women are positioned as objects of shaming and pathologising practices. Pregnant Bodies, Fertile Minds is a searing indictment of current social policies. -- Valerie Walkerdine, author of Growing Up Girl: Psychosocial Explorations of Gender and Class
A breakthrough book...[A] rich ethnographic study...Theoretically sophisticated and beautifully written, this study uses original and innovative methodology to raise and reflect upon issues of gender, race, culture and the institutional structure of schools. -- Kathleen Weiler, editor of Feminist Engagements: Reading, Resisting, and Revisioning Male Theorists in Education and Cultural Studies (Routledge)
An extraordinary and moving book and a theoretical and ethnographic stunner. It is hard to imagine that anyone other than her subjects themselves could portray their voices and selves with such compelling immediacy and liveliness better than Luttrell. A brilliant contribution to our greater knowledge of the worlds of gender, motherhood, race, and adolescence. -- Nancy Chodorow, author of The Power of Feelings: Personal Meaning in Psychoanalysis, Gender, and Culture
The triumph of Pregnant Bodies, Fertile Minds is that it manages to weave the social worlds of girls, the social stigma of pregnancy, and the social policies that swaddle these young women in and out of school into a compassionate and haunting ethnography. -- Carol Stack, author of All Our Kin
Luttrell's work...connects the reader to prominent literacy and academic pieces on teenage pregnancy, race and poverty...Luttrell's writing style is casual yet well researched. Her references span sociology, feminist/psychoanalytic theory, and developmental psychology. The range of her citations is impressive and this synthesis of fields broadens the appeal of the book to several academic disciplines. -- Contemporary Sociology, Wendy Luttrell

Ideal for All Teachers
By A. Harper
I am glad that Wendy Luttrell wrote this book. I enjoyed 'listening' to the teen girls stories and enjoyed viewing their collages that represented themselves. However, being a black female, I didn't learn anything new about black teenage girls. However, I think it is a GREAT book for people who work in the field of Education and honestly don't understand a) the complex identity process that working class african american girls go through in America (let alone being pregnant) and b) how to be conscious of their own 'whiteness' and Euro-Anglo centric view of 'deviance'. I got the feeling that this book was intended more for white middle class educators who teach or may teach working class african american pregnant teenagers. I am glad that Wendy depicted the pregnant girls in a "positive" light. Wendy clearly states that she doesn't want to stereotype. She explains to the reader that she herself is coming from a white middle class background. That acknowledgement of her 'whiteness' and white privilege are important in understanding who she is as a researcher. I like the fact she explains to the reader how she did her research and her honest directness of telling the audience how she felt while doing her field research and what challenges her own identity created while trying to connect to and understand the 50 individual pregnant girls she interacted with. Overall, it is great to see that she does not construct teenage pregnancy as 'deviant' behavior. The girls in this book are HUMANIZED.

Insightful study of teenage sexuality and pregnacy
By S. Glazer
Teenage sexuality and pregnancy is a complex issue with no easy answers. This book takes an in-depth look into the lives of 50 Southern, mostly African-American girls whose spirit and creativity manages to blossom despite many obstacles at school and in society.

Review
""Race in Cyberspace is relevant to a rhetorically-based vision of the field because it opens up opportunities for a more insightful understanding of how race can operate in environments that assume it is- and should be- irrelevant."
-Adam J. Banks, "Technical Communication Quarterly
"This collection is the first scholarly attempt to examine issues of race in 'cyberspace.' A discussion of this subject in any medium has been pressing for more than a decade. Despite the exponential growth of the computer industry and network communications during the last twenty years, considerations of the role of 'race' in the production and popular uses of the technology have been repressed. For breaking the silence, this book will remain an important contribution... This collection will enrich scholar's understanding of race in 'cyberspace'."

Diversity in Cyberspace
By Ms. Janni Aragon
This anthology adds to a growing literature about the multiple aspects of cyberspace. I found several of the chapters particularly helpful in the examination of the intersections of race and gender in cyberspace. While there are many books that deal with gender and cyberspace, there are not as many that deal with race or racism for that matter. If you read and enjoyed _Cyberghetto or Cybertopia? Race, Class and Gender on the Internet_, you will appreciate this book.

Boring, Biased and Bland
By Armand D Sanchez
I had Dr. Nakamura in a Cyberspaec Literature class at Sonoma State University. Unfortunately, her teaching was as bad as the book.
1) It is incredibly boring. How a dozen authors managed to turn an exciting new field into boring concepts and trite sayings is byond me.
2) This book is, to use a Don DeLillo term, "White Noise". This means there are lots of words, but they have little meaning. You can read for dozens of pages and not learn a single thing
3) Bad Layout. The essays are only haphazardly organized, and there's no way to tell which will be good or bad.
Do not read this book in class or for pleasure.

Welfare Racism: Playing the Race Card Against America's Poor, by Kenneth J. Neubeck, Noel A. Cazenave

Welfare Racism analyzes the impact of racism on US welfare policy. Through historical and present-day analysis, the authors show how race-based attitudes, policy making, and administrative policies have long had a negative impact on public assistance programs. The book adds an important and controversial voice to the current welfare debates surrounding the recent legilation that abolished the AFDC.

From Booklist
Kenneth J. Neubeck and coauthor Noel A. Cazenave, both sociology professors, argue that "racism shapes public assistance policies and practices." They examine the role of racism in the early twentieth century and state that "Mother's Pension" and other welfare programs established the pattern for the New Deal's Aid to Dependent Children program (ultimately, AFDC). Using case studies, they explore manipulation of racial stereotypes in 1960s battles over welfare in both the North and the South. The authors trace the racialized political backlash against welfare from the 1960s to the 1996 abolition of Aid to Families with Dependent Children and then examine this "welfare to work" legislation in terms of its race-control functions. Finally, the authors call for progressives to confront welfare racism and demand that government recognize its responsibility to mitigate the suffering of the poor. Mary Carroll

Review
"Whites have long believed that most welfare recipients and most poor people are black. Such myths are so stereotyped, irrational, and off the mark that they cry out for deeper structural and cultural analysis--which is provided with great depth and thoroughness in this momentous book. Bravo to this first comprehensive analysis of welfare racism in the United States!."
-Joe R. Feagin "University of Florida
"Few social welfare scholars have provided a fully race-centered perspective on U.S. welfare policy. Neubeck and Cazenave's well-documented and readable study takes a giant step toward filling this unforgivable gap-without ignoring the dynamics of gender and class....The book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand but also to change U.S. public policy."
-Mimi Abramovitz, author of "Under Attack, Fighting Back: Women and Welfare in the United States
"Welfare racism is an important book. It forces the reader to rethink the contemporary historyof welfare policy....This is a book that effectively brings to the surface the discriminatory nature of allegedly neutral social policies. And that is not just good scholarship; it is a significant public service."
-Sanford F. Schram, author of "After Welfare: The Culture of Postindustrial Social Policy
"[A] bracing and illuminating analysis that should change the way we think about American welfare policy....Neubeck and Cazenave show definitively that the politics of welfare cannot be explained unless we attend to contemporary racism."
-Francis Fox Piven, author of "The Breaking of the American Social Compact
""Welfare Racism shows the ways racist attitudes and administrative policies and practices have longundermined public assistance programs....More than most academic researchers who deal with welfare reform, Neubeck and Cazenave ask a range of critical political and moral questions about the meaning of welfare reform that moves the reader to wonder about who we are as a nation and what policymakers think about women, people of color, the poor, and the near poor...."Welfare Racism is a well-documented study that show how welfare policy can be understood in connection with racialized public assistance attitudes, policymaking, and administrative practices that function to maintain white economic advantages over blacks."
-Contemporary Sociology

In the Wake of Hurricane Katrina With
By La Reyna
its racial/gender/class divisions played out before our very eyes on television as well as divisive commentaries on the racial/class impact on society by commentators, bloggers, and politicians. This book examines the racial/gender/class card played out by politicians, both left and right spectrums of the political ideology. How they used long-standing image of poor Black women with kids as a way to garner majority nonpoor voters who are tired of hearing Blacks' demands for greater equality in society. So they prefer listening to race and class-baiting politicians who promise law and order to the masses.

This book makes me thinks but it also makes me angry because as an affluent society, we failed to make sure that everyone has a place at the table. This is all I have to say right now.
