Shuman, co-director of the Village Foundation's Institute for Economic Education and Entrepreneurship, is author of five books and numerous articles on the relationship between community and international affairs. Not What I Expected

I already believe in the tenants behind "going local". I was looking for detailed case studies on how to get it started in my community. This book is more superficial; trying to convince you that going local is a good thing. The case studies are few and barely more than mentioned. The book contains a disappointing number of "things the government should do" to force or subsidize going local - which seems anathema to me. Part of going local should be _not_ depending on the government.

Food for thought for economic development folks

Every year on the anniversary of Walt Disney Worlds settling in Orlando, Fla., its a sure bet some newspaper will carry a story about my late uncle, Paul Pickett, and his opposition to the project. As a county commissioner when Disney first proposed bringing its giant entertainment complex to the city, he argued that the project would unleash a monster that would forever change the quality of life for residents. Tell the mouse to stay in California, he snapped.
As a person who embraces -- make that relishes -- change, Im not sure I fully agree with his assessment. But as a person who has lived for most of my adult life in an area that was decimated in the 1980s when the all-important steel industry fell on hard times and today struggles with the threat of losing still another industry on which we have become economically dependent -- car production at the General Motors plant in Lordstown, Ohio -- I understand the point my uncle was trying to make.
So does Michael H. Shuman, attorney and author of Going Local: Creating Self-Reliant Communities in a Global Age. In his book, he advocates that local communities must regain control over their own economies by a variety of means including investing not in outsiders, but in locally owned businesses like credit unions, municipally owned utilities and community development corporations and focusing on import-replacing rather than export-led development. Doing so, he maintains, will reduce or eliminate the need to offer excessive tax abatements and other incentives to entice huge corporations upon which the communities stand to become dependent. The growing power and will of corporations to move without notice or warning has presented many communities with a terrible dilemma: Either cut wages and benefits, gut environmental standards and offer tax breaks to attract and retain corporations or become a ghost town, Shuman writes. Almost every U.S. town or city has learned that capital flight is not just a hypothetical danger.
Urging cities to be just as friendly with rootless corporations as with its home-grown businesses, Shuman says, is like telling a loyal wife to accept the inevitability of philandering by her husband and to appease him by buying more sexy lingerie and cooking nicer dinners. If a community is reduced to a link in a global chain, it will be dragged wherever the corporation controlling the chain wants.
As long as corporations are free to move from place to place, the author argues, No jurisdictions efforts to target production toward basic needs, or protect its work force or environment, can succeed. Once regulations become onerous, a profit-maximizing firm will move on.
This does not mean, however, that communities should circle the wagons and lock the gates. It means nurturing locally owned businesses which use local resources sustainably, employ local workers at decent wages and serve primarily local consumers, Shuman writes. It means becoming more self-sufficient and less dependent on imports. Control moves from the boardrooms of distant corporations and back to the community where it belongs.
All things considered, Shuman offers a point of view thats worth considering by government and economic development leaders throughout the country.

A Highly Important Book for Any Concerned Citizen

This book cuts through all of the conventional public discussions on the economy and society to make a clear, convincing case for reviving local communities. Pundits, politicians, and intellectuals are always bemoaning the collapse of "community," but their analyses are usually coiled around morality, or the need for "better education," or some equally superficial issue. But as Shuman points out, all the civic involvement and moral uprightness in the world is useless if our towns and cities are being held hostage by globe-trotting corporations and ultra-mobile capital. "Community" is only possible if people control their own lives; and this is possible only when there are thriving, viable local economies. This is not a book that calls for a complete retreat from the global forces that are shaping our world -- that option is impossible with the current levels of technology. But what Shuman does outline is a way for communities to reestablish a balance between the local and the national/global, in the areas of production, finance, and government. And unlike many other books, which never get past the critique to make any positive prescriptions, this one is brimming with concrete proposals. It also has the most extensive list of groups, organizations, and resources that I have seen in the area of decentralized economics and community self-reliance. This is a must-read.

About the Author
Jerome S. Blackman, MD, is Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Eastern Virginia Medical School.  He has taught at Beijing University, Tulane School of Social Work, Virginia Wesleyan College, Old Dominion University, MIT Educational Studies Program, and Naval Medical Center–Portsmouth, and presented at programs in Germany, Italy, China, and the United States.  His first book, 101 Defenses, has been translated into Chinese and Romanian.

Outstanding text!

This is a very enjoyable book to read. Have attended quite a few of Dr Blackmans lectures and they are worth attending. The humor, quality of work, and ease of use make this book a must have for every psychiatrists and psychologist. Outstanding!

An Invaluable Resource for Therapists

This book is an invaluable resource for me in my therapeutic work. In particular, it helps me gain, regain or maintain clarity when I am dealing with challenging clients. I view Dr Blackman rather like a mentor I can turn to as needed.

I own all of Dr Blackman's books and rate them all highly. However this one is my favourite. It is both enjoyable & professionally rewarding to read. I even pull it out for a browse when I am relaxing.

It has a psychoanalytic foundation & I, with strong behavioural leanings, feel I need to assimilate Dr Blackman's wise voice from this perspective. How he presents it is understandable to me & provides me with invaluable insights & supplements my own perspective.

Much recommended for therapists.

A Must Have

Having read Hinduja and Patchin's "Bullying Beyond the Schoolyard: Preventing and Responding to Cyberbullying," I was so excited when I found out about their second book, "Cyberbullying Prevention and Response: Expert Perspectives." Being a Criminal Justice Major myself, I really think that college Professors should adopt this text when teaching cyber bullying and other technological classes relating to the field of Criminology. It should even be integrated into the curriculum of middle and high schools as well because the content is so informative.
The aspect I liked most about this book was that the authors included real-life stories from victims of cyber bullying. In other words, they don't just say that cyber bullying occurs. Instead, the authors show how cyber bullying takes place as well as the effects that it can have on people (i.e. depression, eating disorders, thoughts of suicide, anxiety, etc).
Additionally, the text explains that victims of cyber bullying are not alone. By recounting their stories, the authors are asserting that this is a very serious issue that takes place on a day to day basis, especially with the advent of the Internet and various social networking technologies. However, this text conveys the fact that there is still hope when trying to overcome cyber bullying.
Through their writing, it becomes so evident how passionate Hinduja and Patchin are regarding this topic. They have taken the time and dedicated their lives to delving into the issue of cyber bullying, as well as the exploring various measures we can take to overcome it. Thank goodness for these authors!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to learn about the under-reported issue cyber bullying.

The Bible of Cyberbullying Prevention & Response

I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about Cyberbullying, the prevention of it and how we should respond when it occurs. I checked out this book after seeing the new ABC movie on Cyberbullying. The amount of and quality of information contained in this book is amazing! There are numerous writers which contribute to the content throughout it; this really gives you a look at Cyberbullying from many different points of view. Whether you are a victim of Cyberbullying, bully yourself, educator, parent or just interested in the topic, I would definitely recommend this book to you. I rarely write reviews on Amazon, but this one was worth my time.

Cyberbullying Prevention and Response: Expert Perspectives is a great book. The book covers cyberbullying issues and ways that it can be prevented. Bulling Beyond the School Yard: Preventing and responding to Cyberbullying is also a great book. It covers a wide range of cyberbullying issues and problems. This book, Cyberbullying Prevention and Response covers in more detail the major issues that teachers, school administrators, parents, counselors, etc.. need to be aware of. This is a great book that anyone can pick up and read. It doesn't matter if you are a victim, teacher, or parent. This book does a great job explaining how cyberbullying can be identified early on. It also covers how to handle cyberbullying and what the correct response should be. The book also does a nice job of including real life stories. This book as well as Bullying Beyond the School Yard should be required readings for every student to read. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about cyberbullying and ways to prevent it. Both of the books I have mentioned have provided me with so much knowledge about cyberbullying. Before reading both of these books by Patchin and Hinduja, I had no idea all the different ways kids and teens are using technology to bully each other. Lets stop Cyberbullying once and for all!

Fine Book on a New Topic

Since writing my thesis, it is hard to fine suitiable material that examines the entire framework of how campaigning is moving into the digital areana. Wilhelm's book is a great start on this emerging field. Complete with statisitcal graphs and charts, Democracy in the Digital Age is ready to answer questions that the reader may have on ecomonic status and how that plays a role on the Internet. The book also researches different communities and how they are addressing the growing trend of democracy moving on the Internet.
Unfortunelty, Wilhelm's expansion beyond the data is sparse as he his mearly reporting the evidence out there. The reader has the luxary of great data but having to come up with a reasonable response on where this is taking humanity.
Great data and supporting evidence presented in a dry academic fashion answering no 'what if' questions would best sum up this book.

Professor Fred L. Perry, Jr. has spent over half his life outside of the U.S.A., where he and his family have lived and worked in nine countries. Finally, a book for clinicians at every level of experience, theoretically sophisticated, practical and accessible.

I love this book. It's brilliant, and Dr. Tuber makes what is so complicated and yet so clearly essential(when you see it)accessible!! The structure of the book is clever: a beginning therapist's actual process material with a child patient, juxtaposed with comments and suggestions by Dr. Tuber. It's both practical and theoretically sophisticated. I am a clinical psychologist in practice for over thirty years. I supervise psychologists in training at Yale University medical school. I will reccommend this to them without hesitation. I will also reccommend this to my colleagues as I have found it helpful in honing my skills as a supervisor.

A Must-Read for Clinicians

Starting Treatment with Children and Adolescents is a powerful learning tool that puts the reader `in the session' through vivid moment-to-moment interactions with an incredibly gifted clinician. The authors transform complex theories and formulations into a usable, practical, "experience-near" framework, making what many see as the `mystery' of child therapy infinitely more accessible. Working within the three conceptual models of mentalization, play, and ego psychology, Tuber and Caflisch help clinicians recognize how process-oriented interventions can foster a child's "sense of wonder about his own mind," allow the working through, in play, of feelings that cannot be put into words, and provide the child with the "tools" to become more emotionally resourceful: in essence, `his own therapist.' If there was only one text I could recommend to my fellow students, colleagues, and supervisors, this is it--a one-of-a-kind book that I will be consulting over and over again to sharpen my skills as a clinician throughout my career.

The best "how to be a therapist" book I've read in 40 years.

I started practicing as a psychiatrist in 1972, am on the faculty of Yale Medical School and The Western New England Institute for Psychoanalysis. I've suggested many books to beginning therapists over the years. Quite simply, "Starting Treatment With Children and Adolescents..." is the very best: it puts the reader directly into the treatment room and mind of a brilliant clinician. Steven Tuber provides detailed micro-process of his students' beginning work with children and adolescents and vividly describes what is occurring in the patient/therapist moment. For me, Dr. Tuber's book is relevant to any insight-oriented therapy, whether with children or adults. His wisdom and gentle suggestions are a treasure-trove for the beginning therapist or seasoned clinician. Why hasn't a book like this been published before? One more comment: this is a book you cannot put down.
