Proposing that art can contribute in a wide range of ways to the work of envisioning and making a more just world, this imaginative, practical, and engaging sourcebook of contemporary artists’ works and education resources advances the field of arts education, locally, nationally, and internationally, by moving beyond models of discipline-based or expressive art education. It will be welcomed by all educators seeking to include the arts and social justice in their curricula.

Philosophical Inquiries into Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Mothering: Maternal Subjects (Routledge Studies in Contemporary Philosophy)From

Philosophical inquiry into pregnancy, childbirth, and mothering is a growing area of interest to academic philosophers. This volume brings together a diverse group of philosophers to speak about topics in this reemerging area of philosophical inquiry, taking up new themes, such as maternal aesthetics, and pursuing old ones in new ways, such as investigating stepmothering as it might inform and ground an ethics of care. The theoretical foci of the book include feminist, existential, ethical, aesthetic, phenomenological, social and political theories. These perspectives are then employed to consider many dimensions of pregnancy, childbirth, and mothering, which are of central importance to human existence, but are only rarely discussed in philosophical cannons. Topics include pregnancy and embodiment, breast-feeding, representations – or the lack thereof – of pregnant and birthing women, adoption, and post-partum motherhood.

The Shadow of the Tsunami: and the Growth of the Relational Mind, by Philip M. Bromberg

During early development, every human being is exposed to the relative impact of relational trauma – disconfirmation of aspects of oneself as having legitimate existence in the world of others – in shaping both the capacity for spontaneous human relatedness and the relative vulnerability to "adult-onset trauma." To one degree or another, a wave of dysregulated affect – a dissociated "tsunami" – hits the immature mind, and if left relationally unprocessed leaves a fearful shadow that weakens future ability to regulate affect in an interpersonal context and reduces the capacity to trust, sometimes even experience, authentic human discourse.

In his fascinating third book, Philip Bromberg deepens his inquiry into the nature of what is therapeutic about the therapeutic relationship: its capacity to move the psychoanalytic process along a path that, bit by bit, shrinks a patient's vulnerability to the pursuing shadow of affective destabilization while simultaneously increasing intersubjectivity. What takes places along this path does not happen because "this" led to "that," but because the path is its own destination – a joint achievement that underlies what is termed in the subtitle "the growth of the relational mind."

Expanding the self-state perspective of Standing in the Spaces (1998) and Awakening the Dreamer (2006), Bromberg explores what he holds to be the two nonlinear but interlocking rewards of successful treatment – healing and growth. The psychoanalytic relationship is illuminated not as a medium for treating an illness but as an opportunity for two human beings to live together in the affectively enacted shadow of the past, allowing it to be cognitively symbolized by new cocreated experience that is processed by thought and language – freeing the patient's natural capacity to feel trust and joy as part of an enduring regulatory stability that permits life to be lived with creativity, love, interpersonal spontaneity, and a greater sense of meaning.

Review

" The Shadow of the Tsunami is an evolving expansion on Philip Bromberg’s two previous books: Awakening the Dreamer (2006) and Standing in the Spaces (1998)―the link between everything and nothing! Nevertheless, The Shadow of the Tsunami―filled as it is with delicious content about clinical process that challenges the status quo, challenges us to bring our best selves to our work―can be read as a stand-alone text"- Jennifer Rodriguez, Attachment Journal, November 2014

"Bromberg, a master writer, presents his experience and perspective examining normal pathological dissociation in a most readable manner. His clinical examples are lucid and interesting, demonstrating well his understanding and perspective. He clearly outlines his models of dissociation, emphasizing the importance of activation of what he calls ‘not-me’, self-states of consciousness, both in life and in therapy." –Journal of Analytical Psychology

"Bromberg’s theory of trauma, dissociation and enactment is a valuable contribution to clinical psychoanalysis. Most psychoanalysts, I believe, will find much in this book that expands their understanding of, and ability to work effectively with, all patients, particularly those of whom trauma plays a central part in their mental life." – The International Journal of Psychoanalysis

"In The Shadow of the Tsunami, Philip Bromberg has made it clear why he is widely regarded as the doyen of relational psychoanalysis. He speaks to the process of healing and growth like no one else. His writing comes to life so powerfully that you don't just hear his words but virtually participate in what is taking place between and within each partner. The late Stephen A. Mitchell called his writing 'unique jewels' – how Mitchell would have appreciated this new book! More than ever, Bromberg bridges domains that for others would tend to collide – literature, poetry, theory, neurobiology, infant research, and decades of clinical wisdom. As you read, surprises are in store – clinical surprises, conceptual surprises, transforming surprises. Whether you are brand new to the field or a senior analyst – read it!" - Lewis Aron, NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, USA

"The Shadow of the Tsunami is a beautiful book: the reach and depth of its thinking, the vividness of its clinical narrative, enlarge the reader's imagination. At its heart is the daily work of healing which, for Bromberg, is the work of 'collision and negotiation,' of the struggle of patient and analyst to find common ground after experiences of dissociative enactment. Through the intensity of such shared but separate not-me moments, the ability to acknowledge and bear conflict is mutually developed. These richly wrought essays poignantly describe the process of nurturance, healing, and growth, drawing not only on psychoanalytic theory but on music, film, poetry, and fiction – all engagingly deployed to convey the nuances of shifting states of being. In Bromberg's compassionate vision, developmental trauma is part of being human. He endows the concept of 'relational unconscious' not only with clinical persuasiveness but with a resonance that extends beyond the consulting room." - Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg, author, The Murmuring Deep: Reflections on the Biblical Unconscious (2009)

"This is a text to be listened to, just as Bromberg teaches us to listen to our patients: from right-brain to right-brain. Excitingly, the readers's left-brain is equally enlivened because the book integrates clinical psychoanalysis, attachment theory, trauma, research, developmental perspectives, and the latest advances in neurosciences. Bromberg's book will enrich all aspects of the reader's creativity, allowing new seeds to grow in the field of clinical practice as well as the theorization of new models. A unique opportunity to open up horizons hitherto unknown." - Antonino Ferro, author, Avoiding Emotions, Living Emotions (2011)

Best Relational psychoanalysis book yet
By Barbara Breger
"The Shadow of the Tsunami," the third in Philip Bromberg's trilogy, is his magnum opus and the best thing I have read in the interpersonal-relational literature to date. It is rich, clinically grounded, and, above all, coherent: all the concepts and clinical examples reinforce each other. Dr. Bromberg has given a whole new meaning to the concept of the unconscious in terms of dissociated self states that surpasses previous psychoanalytic versions of this crucial concept. There are cogent discussions of dissociation and dissociated self-states, the way these cannot be understood apart from the context and relationship -- especially as this is played out with the analyst or therapist -- the centrality of trauma -- both large and small -- the role of attachment and its disturbances, the motivating force of the fear of overwhelming and dysregulating emotions (this is the shadow of the tsunami of the title), and the way his clinical work, beautifully evoked in the case examples, demonstrates how all these concepts operate in his work with patients. This last may be the most original part of the book, though so much else is as well, for many contemporary psychoanalysts describe themselves as "relational," but I'm not sure if very many work in the closely self aware way that Dr. Bromberg does, focusing on both the patient's and his own moment-to-moment emotional reactions, hidden or dissociated self-states, and their change over time.

In addition to the conceptual and clinical sophistication, the book uses humor, references to movies, and songs to evoke its themes.

This is a book that all contemporary psychotherapists, patients, and everyone else with an interest in psychological/emotional disturbance and its treatment, must read.

The Mind's Response to Trauma
By Markus Youssef
The title of this book refers to the after effects (shadow) of the dissociative response to trauma (emotional tsunami) that forces one to "escape where there's no escape," where one often ends up saying that they feel like they are sleep walking through life, going through the motions in a semi trance-like state, not really being all that present in the here and now, and not feeling fully alive.

The book does an effective job of putting this condition into "thinkable inner conflict" terms. One of the effects of trauma is for the mind to develop an "emotional smoke detector," which when activated sets the mind off into deeper fragmented self-states or "separate islands of truth" that don't communicate with each other (ie: compartmentalize). When one is in a therapeutic relationship with a friend, partner or therapist, one that allows for safety and risk, a person who experienced trauma, developmental or otherwise, can learn to "shrink the tsunami" and process/digest/integrate/metabolize/"mentalize" things more easily (ie: enhance one's ability to self soothe without external aids or "primitive defense mechanisms" and build bridges or "stand in the spaces" between various self-states or "islands of truth" through self-reflection, working towards an enriched "personal synthesis (Janet 1907)."

The author includes a description of the novel, The Fly Truffler by G. Sorbin, which follows one man's loneliness after a traumatic event. Although the story offers a unique case, it provides a cautionary tale of what might happen when one avoids "standing in the spaces" between self-states for too long. In other words, just find someone to talk to.

Bromberg quotes the poet Alda Merini, "Psychoanalysis - always looks for the egg - in a basket - that has been lost" and feels that the egg "is not buried content but the symbolization of a dissociated relational process that is ... mutually cocreated through enactment." pg 186 He selects the old song, "The Nearness of You" as a musical representative for this relational process.

Other terms offered for this shadow of trauma include:

Gaps in Subjective Reality
Spaces that surround multiple self-states
The mind that's got minds of its own
Not-me presences
Ghostly intrusions
Ineffable experiences
Reality blinks
"Ourself behind ourself - concealed" Emily Dickenson
"Unnumbered spirits around thee fly ... though unseen, are ever on the wing" Alexander Pope
Haunted
Sort-of knowing
A dramatic ensemble
Unformulated experience
Pre-symbolic experience
A chaotic intersubjective field
Disconnected dissociative schemas
Unrepresented self and other representations
A missing dialectic between seeing and being
Anesthesia of the personal interactive field
Flight into the "extended mind"
Damaged capacity to organize experience
"It never entered my mind"
"Dissociation narrows one's range of perception so as to set up nonconflictual categories of self-experience as different
parts of the self." pg 43

On why trauma can often feel like a curse: "The reason the trauma is never over for the brain is that it leaves a residue of unprocessed, dissociated affect that the brain was unable to regulate ... What the brain cannot regulate it tries to control." pg 49

The author praises the film, Analyze This! starring Billy Crystal and Robert DeNiro. The movie's tagline is, "New York's most powerful gangster is about to get in touch with his feelings. You try telling him his 50 minutes are up." He feels that Billy Crystal's character provided a good enough "other" for DeNiro's character. I remember the film to be entertaining but I think the TV series, In Treatment, offers more practical insight into the healing process.

The book includes probably one the best poems that's ever been written about trauma. By Emily Dickenson:

There is a pain - so utter -
It swallows substance up -
Then covers the Abyss with Trance -
So Memory can step
Around - across - upon it -
As one within a Swoon -
Goes safely - where an open eye -
Would drop Him - Bone by Bone.

I think if one wants to face the truth of what happened to them, this book, along with the author's two earlier ones, will be of help. It helps to symbolize, by putting into words, something that was meant to have been felt but wasn't given a chance.

Bromberg's latest oeuvre
By Victoria C.
In Dr.Philip Bromberg's newest book, he writes poetically and in a conversational manner about how to work with the dissociated parts of one's client. His clinical examples are not only riveting but instructive in terms of how to apply his technique, which Dr. Allan Schore calls Affect Regulation Therapy, in the clinical setting.

Highly recommended not only for professionals but for anyone who is curious about how a master heals his clients.

SUPERB !!!

Our Beautiful, Dry and Distant Texts: Art History as Writing, by James Elkins

Our Beautiful, Dry, and Distant Texts examines art historical writing as an expressive medium, capable of emotion and reflection - and therefore deserving of serious consideration for its own sake, as the testament of art history and of individual historians. Elkins asks such questions as: How do various art historical approaches represent works of art? What can they see, and what must they miss? And what insight does such writing offer us about ourselves? Drawing on analyses of texts by Derrida, Deleuze and other leading critics, as well as illustrations of artworks from various cultures, Elkins constructs an eloquent plea for circumspection in the entire endeavour of trying to force images into words and in the curious vocation of writing the history of art.

Review
"Concerned with the rhetorical dimensions of artwriting, Elkins identifies the ways in which immediate questions about the truth of interpretation are inevitably deflected by awareness of the stylistic qualities of art historians' texts... Wildly imaginative at making connections, his highly original book inevitably will be one necessary starting point for all future discussion."
-David Carrier, Carnegie Mellon University

Awakening the Dreamer: Clinical Journeys, by Philip M. Bromberg

In Awakening the Dreamer: Clinical Journeys, Philip Bromberg continues the illuminating explorations into dissociation and clinical process begun in Standing in the Spaces (1998).  Bromberg is among our most gifted clinical writers, especially in his unique ability to record peripheral variations in relatedness - those subtle, split-second changes that capture the powerful workings of dissociation and chart the changing self-states that analyst and patient bring to the moment.

For Bromberg, a model of mind premised on the centrality of self-states and dissociation not only offers the optimal lens for comprehending and interpreting clinical data; it also provides maximum leverage for achieving true intersubjective relatedness. And this manner of looking at clinical data offers the best vantage point for integrating psychoanalytic experience with the burgeoning findings of contemporary neuroscience, cognitive and developmental psychology, and attachment research.

Dreams are approached not as texts in need of deciphering but as means of contacting genuine but not yet fully conscious self-states. From here, he explores how the patient's "dreamer" and the analyst's "dreamer" can come together to turn the "real" into the "really real" of mutative therapeutic dialogue. The "difficult," frequently traumatized patient is newly appraised in terms of tensions within the therapeutic dyad.  And then there is the "haunted" patient who carries a sense of preordained doom through years of otherwise productive work - until the analyst can finally feel the patient's doom as his or her own.

Laced with Bromberg's characteristic honesty, humor, and thoughtfulness, these essays elegantly attest to the mind's reliance on dissociation, in both normal and pathological variants, in the ongoing effort to maintain self-organization.  Awakening the Dreamer, no less than Standing in the Spaces, is destined to become a permanent part of the literature on therapeutic process and change.

Review

“Whether the wish is to know oneself more deeply, to understand better the psychoanalytic process, or simply to immerse oneself in seamless, elegant prose, Philip Bromberg's Awakening the Dreamer is enormously satisfying. Besides showing that the analyst's thoughtful self-revelation is not simply permissible, but actually necessary in the analytic process, Bromberg makes salient connections between leading-edge work in affective neuroscience and the relational psychoanalytic tradition he helped create. A nearly effortless read, Dreamer places the reader inside the minds both of a master clinician and of his patients.” - Richard A. Chefetz, M.D., Past President, International Society for the Study of Dissociation

“Philip Bromberg's gift is to put himself  right 'out there' in the therapeutic encounter without the standard ‘technical’ body armor of psychoanalysis. He emphasizes instead the analyst's genuine involvement both as a source of insight and as a guiding frame for the clinical work. His core ideas relating to dissociation, self disclosure, and enactment are compatible with current research in neuroscience and in the psychology of emotion; indeed they help bridge the gap between psychoanalysis and these fields.  In Awakening the Dreamer, Bromberg’s gift of emotional connection extends to his brilliant series of clinical illustrations; they engage readers in a way that enables them to participate in the process and not merely to observe it.” - Wilma Bucci, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, Derner Institute, Adelphi University

“This extraordinary and beautiful book explicates how one mind reads another and why the mind-brain is intrinsically relational.” - Leston Havens, M.D., Harvard Medical School

"Bromberg is a gifted clinical writer with a vivid style that conveys with immediacy the analytic encounter. His theoretical exposition is poetical, drawing liberally from literary sources and from his own autobiographical recollections."  - Melvin Lansky, Ph.D., International Journal of Psychoanalysis

"Bromberg’s book assembles a whole new way of thinking about what we are doing within the therapeutic relationship - a way that accounts for moment-to-moment affective contact in our attempts to interpret transference and countertransference.  It might be even more fun to read Awakening the Dreamer with some colleagues and talk about how it impacts all of you in your clinical work. I guarantee it will be a lively and revealing conversation." - Polly Young-Eisendrath, Ph.D., Psychologist-Psychoanalyst

"Awakening the Dreamer is a stimulating and important book that is fascinating to read.  To classically trained clinicians who are open to having their basic assumptions challenged, and who want to learn about the current thinking of a highly experienced relational psychoanalyst, I strongly recommend it." - John L. Frank, Ph.D., Psychoanalytic Quarterly

"Every chapter in the book, each of which stands out on its own as a well-crafted and valuable contribution to the literature, holds the prism of dissociation to the light, reflecting its many facets as they pertain to development, psychopathology, and psychoanalytic treatment.  The appeal of this book to clinicians from a multiplicity of theories also lies in Bromberg's encompassing grasp of ideals embraced by stances ranging from interpersonal psychology, self psychology, object relations, intersubjective systems theory, complexity theory, cognitive psychology, and relational perspectives, to theories of trauma and dissociation. It would appear that Bromberg has created a work as multifaceted as the patients he writes about the clinicians for whom he writes. - Nancy VanDerHeide, Ph.D., International Journal of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology, 3(4), 2008

"The import and real pleasure of this volume are threefold: First, it constitutes a truly substantial contribution to both theory of mind and clinical practice in offering a paradigm shift away from the orthodoxy of classical thought without throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Second, Bromberg is one of those rare writers whose expression, wonderfully clear, has something aesthetically magical about it. Third, therefore, is the interest he stimulates in the reader by his own enthusiasm for the creative imagination, whatever the arena. This book consistently attests to "awakening" as a phenomenon as mutually significant to reader and writer as to analysand and analyst." - Lois Oppenhein, Ph.D., Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association, 57(2), 2009

"Bromberg approaches psychoanalytic work in a deeply personal manner that enables him to articulate so compellingly the reasons why it is not only acceptable but also entirely necessary for the analyst to engage personally with the patient. He also creates a personally impactful psychoanalytic reading experience for his readers...Bromberg's enormously influential Standing in the spaces:Essays on clinical process, trauma and dissociation (1996) introduced the psychoanalytic community to the development of his theory that wove together interpersonal psychoanalysis, dissociation and the growing literature on trauma. This volume represents a rich expansion of his approach, drawing on contemporary develpopments in psychoanalysis, attachment theory, neuropsychology, child development, and Bromberg's abiding faith in literature, poetry, and the imagination. Awakening the Dreamer presents a thorough and fully formed statement of Bromberg's original and unique body of work." - Robert Grossmark, Ph.D., Psychoanalytic Psychology, 27 (1), 2010

Clinical Writing At Its Best
By Dr Lawrence Hauser
For the practicing clinician, "Awakening The Dreamer: Clinical Journeys" is an exciting trip into the shared reality of the interpersonal field in which psychoanalytic treatment takes place, and into the critically important dissociated aspect of that field. The book is a totally engaging read, clinically alive and wonderfully erudite, drawing on the history of psychoanalysis, literature, poetry, and neuroscience. Both clinically and conceptually, it provides an indispensable frame of reference that will deepen even treatments that appear "routine," but Bromberg's perspective is most breathtakingly powerful in helping the analyst reach the many so-called difficult patients currently finding their way into our waiting rooms.

From the vantage point of what is experienced as "me" at a given moment, a patient's "not-me" self-experience, because it cannot be formulated cognitively or linguistically, is communicated through enactment in the interpersonal field of the analysis --a shared dissociative experience that requires the co-participation of the analyst in processing it. By Bromberg's willingness to share with the reader his most intimate thoughts and feelings as he describes his actual work with patients in evocative detail, he provides the reader with an extraordinary window into the enacted channel of affective communication that links dissociated self-states in patient and therapist while what we call "the work" is going on.

Bromberg vividly portrays how the optimal analytic relationship involves an ongoing process of collision and negotiation between the subjectivities of the participants and is thus "safe but not too safe." In this relationship the analyst allows himself to perceptually experience and contain the existence of his own "not-me" states and eventually share the details of his subjective "awakening" with his patient while simultaneously communicating his attunement to the issue of how affectively "safe" this self-revelation is feeling to his patient. The analyst is in effect disclosing his personal encounter with a "not-me" self-state in the patient, and by so doing he allows that aspect of the patient's self to feel recognized relationally and thereby begin to "awaken" too. An increased tolerance for surprise gradually replaces dissociative defenses against potential traumatic shock because verbal meaning, including that of "safety" is negotiated rather than unilaterally defined by the analyst. By the therapist's surrender to the domain of personal reality --his own and the patient's-- for which no words exist, those areas of the patient's subjectivity that have been traumatically invalidated, find a relational context through which "not-me" can become part of "me," and participate creatively and spontaneously in the process of living.

This book by Philip Bromberg, "Awakening The Dreamer: Clinical Journeys," is a remarkable accomplishment, a courageous and inspiring example of clinical writing at its best that should be read and reread by therapists and psychoanalysts of all persuasions.

Dissociation And Return/ Bromberg and Kalsched
By Seja Rachael
My conceptual and experiential response to patients that have severe dissociation due to of early and repeated trauma, has been deeply enriched with the work of two clinicians, Kalsched in his text, The Inner World of Trauma, and Bromberg in his text, Awakening the Dreamers. Both ponder the everlasting conundrum, "How is possible to be therapeutically intimate with someone who has experienced repeated injury during their period of greatest dependency?"

As clinicians we wish to approach or at least be in the proximity of our patient's experience of psychic/physical obliteration. Yet this attempt to make contact can be highly threatening to the patients if they have survived by partitioning off their unbearable pain into segregated self- states, (Bromberg's terminology) or archaic defenses of the self, (Kalsched's terminology). Kalsched's text published in 1996 does not include current research in neurobiology while Bromberg correlates his thesis with these findings. Nevertheless both proceed with intuitive and correlative insights that are reinforced through the accumulating data of neuroscience. Bromberg suggests that neuroscience research may actually confirm that "the brain itself is intrinsically relational."

Both writers have given me much encouragement as I search for my patients in the half light and bit by bit we find each other. The mutual direction is away from alienation, towards the actuality of trustworthy connection, the option that was taken from them so long ago.

A Must Read!
By Anonymous
This slim volume is a concise and incredibly enjoyable read. I feel like my clinical awareness has literally soared as a result of this one book...I can hardly frame in words how much this text puts into perspective not only my own experience as a budding clinician, but my own self-understanding, as well. I have gained considerable insight into my own journey, and I believe this awareness will continue to expand and bear fruit in my own life, and in the lives of those I "connect" with interpersonally, clinically and otherwise. I am looking forward to reading the author's newest book, "In the Shadow of the Tsunami," and I am especially interested in the fact that the lengthy preface is written by Allan Schore, who is also one of the "biggies" right now, and for good reason! I would heartily recomment "Awakening the Dreamer"!

Street Sex Workers' Discourse: Realizing Material Change Through Agential Choice (Routledge Research in Gender and Society), by Jill McCra

Incorporating the voices and insights of street sex workers through personal interviews, this monograph argues that the material conditions of many street workers ― the physical environments they live in and their effects on the workers’ bodies, identities, and spirits ― are represented, reproduced, and entrenched in the language surrounding their work. As an ethnographic case study of a local system that can be extrapolated to other subcultures and the construction of identities, this book disrupts some of the more prevalent academic and lay understandings about street prostitution by providing a thorough analysis of the material conditions surrounding street work and their connection to discourse. McCracken offers an explanation of how constructions can be made differently in order to achieve representations that are generated by the marginalized populations themselves, while placing responsibility for this marginalization on the society in which these people live.

Review

"The book’s primary strength lies in its respectful, careful consideration of perspectives gleaned from both women involved in street-based sex work as well as those with professional or activist investment in the issue. There is a serious dearth, in the sex work research literature, of critical inquiry into criminal justice and social services professionals’ beliefs and practices, and McCracken’s book is an important first step toward further exploration of this neglected topic."

Susan Dewey, Assistant Professor of Gender & Women’s Studies, University of Wyoming, in Criminal Law and Criminal Justice Books

Feminist Revolution in Literacy: Women's Bookstores in the United States, by Junko Onosaka

This book examines the history of women's bookstores in the US from the 1970s to the 1990s. It establishes that women's bookstores played an important role in feminism by enabling the dissemination of women's voices and thereby helping to sustain and enrich the women's movement. They improved women's literacy - their abilities to read, write, publish, and distribute women's voices and visions - and helped women to instigate a feminist revolution in literacy.

The Magic of the State, by Michael Taussig

Set in the enchanted mountain of a spirit-queen presiding over an unnamed, postcolonial country, this ethnographic work of ficto-criticism recreates in written form the shrines by which the dead--notably the fetishized forms of Europe's Others, Indians and Blacks--generate the magical powers of the modern state.

Review
"Taussig offer[s] much of value for us to think about." -- Religious Studies Review

From the Back Cover
The Magic Of The State focuses on the theater of spirit possession at a Spirit Queen's enchanted mountain where the dead--Blacks and Indians, Europe's fetishized others--pass into the bodies of the living, creating a circulation of ecstatic bodily power. The Magic Of The State envisions power's violence, but also its adjection and attraction. This work is, in the surrealist tradition, a kind of defacement of power, and of the sacred underpinnings of modern sovereignty.

About the Author
Michael Taussig teaches in the Anthropology Department at Columbia University. He is the author, most recently, of The Nervous System and Mimesis and Alterity, both published by Routledge.

Not Magical
By V. Radcliffe
I have published academic work based on Taussig's writing on the 'public secret', or knowing what not to know. That material was quite compelling. This starts out interestingly enough but increasingly becomes flaky I am afraid. I couldn't see basing a paper on it in all seriousness. I stopped reading 2/3 of the way through, it was enough.

A fine example of Taussig's
By Henri Edward Dongieux
Taussig, as his career has progressed, has embraced more and more Nietzsche's dictum that cultural representation must - absolutely must - be inherently radical. The Magic of the State perhaps exemplifies this best - being of a different conceptual order than just about anything out there in large-press anthropology. However unorthodox Shamanism, Colonialism, and the Wild Man or Defacement may have been with their incorporation of the more literary voices in ethnography and cultural studies, The Magic of the State slips between orthodox and heterodox altogether - as it simply abandons anything resembling an enthographic model, and instead takes the form of a fictional narrative that might be called anthropological literature or, more accurately, surrealist anthropology...
If you can suspend your standard expectations of what state-theory should be all about, you will find Taussig's book extremely rewarding and even humorous in spots. If you remove the historical, traditional, and methodical bases of Benedict Anderson's Imagined Communities, and inject a generous helping of hallucinatory imagery, dada-esque playfulness, and representational experimentation (and maybe some steriods), you MIGHT come within several kilometers of describing Taussig's masterful book. But in this case, to describe would be to "write around," and this is certainly a work that should be "written with" and celebrated for the vistas from which it enables us mere mortals to see.

The modern state as voodoo ceremony
By Mark J. Knickelbine
Taussig starts with an impressionistic analysis of a Latin American spirit possesion cult and then uses it as a model to explain how the modern state relies on various mysterious incarnations as the basis of its legal system, economics, official history, even its highways. Mixes ethnography, political theory and cultural criticism in an often unsettling but ultimately convincing performance. You WILL believe in ghosts!
