Lively & unpredictable! ... DEFINITELY A "HAVE-TO-READ" !!!

In ten fresh and exciting chapters on American fiction, nonfiction, and film, Allmendinger invites us to rethink the "literature of the West." Opening up the late nineteenth- and twentieth-century canon, he brings to light writing by and about women, children, religious minorities, people of color---the only black cowboy to have left an autobiography, a memoir by one of Brigham Young's wives, the fantastic story of a child in a logging camp who claimed to be a French aristocrat. But looking for the West also takes Allmendinger up to the present, where he examines well-known works of popular culture---Ben Hur, The Good Earth, In Cold Blood, Twin Peaks---and rediscovers their "Western" character and origins. Lively and unpredictable, TEN MOST WANTED will speak to anyone interested in the American West as it was---and as it continues to be! I found a use for this book: Starting your charcoal.
Atrocious writing followed by laughable arguments. I can't believe this person is a published writer let alone a "scholar."
There are much better books on this topic.
The other review for this product is so effusive in its praise of the book, it must be a plant by the publishing company.
I live in Cowtown... I know cowboys, baby.
