Review
..."the range of essays, the literary criticism and, indeed, the short storeis in [this] volume should convince the reader that [Stavans] has acquired eyes that can look everywhere, see everything and, more importantly, unravel what they have perceived.."
-Jewish Quarterly, Moris Farhi
"[The Essetial Ilan Stavans is] to be savoured, to be dipped into time and again and each time to be surprised happily that there is always something new in each of them.."
-Jewish Quarterly, Moris Farhi
"This engrossing collection of essays from scholar Stavans targets Latino American identity, politics, popular culture, Spanglish, and the intimate relationships among memory, translation, and literature. Spanning the last six years, the essays encompass astute cultural analyses of Latin American politics and its leaders-from Mexico's Subcommandante Marcos to Peru's Abimael Guzman of the Maoist Shining Path-and display a sensitive, if at times romantic, look at the historical, cultural, and linguistic nuances that brand "life in the hyphen." Stavans's studies of the oeuvres of varied male writers, such as Walter Benjamin, Octavio Paz, Lionel Trilling, and Elias Canetti, enhance the author's exploration of his own Jewish-American roots and illuminate a deeper understanding of the complex nature of identity and the effect of life on literature.."
-"Library Journal
"These reflections where the "you and "yo, Anglo and Spanglo, are joined in the richness of one Latino intellectual and artistic tradition make for stimulating reading. Positive, exaltant, anti-provincial, and inspiring, Stavans gives the reader the opportunity to celebrate the creation of a new Latino self in which we are notone but many, and the border becomes our 'dream catcher, ' the magic web which permits us to re-invent the future."
-Rosario Ferre, author of "The House on the Lagoon and "Eccentric Neighborhoods
"Ilan Stavans may be our most savvy reader. The 'we' in that sentence provides a space in which many groups can truly identify. He is a brilliant participant and reader of Mexican, Latin and South American literature and culture. He is an incisive and critical voice in and of the Jewish world in Hispanic America. He is one of the best the critics and interviewers in the North American, Anglophone world. An Ilan Stavans reader-something for everyone and something of true quality."
-Sander L. Gilman, The University of Chicago

Stavans deserves the credit
By Javier Lopez
Ilan Stavans came to Dallas to give a lecture on Spanglish. His ideas were quite original. I speak Spanglish all the time but feel guilty about it. After his lecture, I not only felt thankful but creative. So I brought two books by Stavans, the one on Spanglish and this one. I think he's a visionary thinker. Every Hispanic person should read him. He offers new ways to understand the community. There are essays in this collection on Sandra Cisneros, Cantinflas, Subcomandante Marcos and Mario Vargas Llosa that are very intelligently argued.

Neocolonialist linguistics, or, Hysteria in the teacups
By Simon Barrett 'Il Penseroso'
Stavans is an engaging enough proselyte, but attempts to Big Up Spanglish by analogy with Yiddish are merely tiresome. I'm happy to see Spanish reviews on amazon.com, but bilingualism is something else. Yiddish snuck in by ASSIMILATION, not from a sense of entitlement, still less by storming the barricades. I had hopes of the popular culture section, but Stavans can devote pages to Mexican comics or South American manhood (The Latin Ph*ll*s, I kid you not) while failing signally to convey what is distinctive about either
Stavans seems happier in his Jewishness than his Spanishness, yet he seems determined to ride this particular bronco, or bandwagon; on terminology, though, he's got himself in a real muddle. He objects to the term Latino* (me too - so drop it already!) likewise Latin America (me too) which he thinks should be Hispanic America (isn't he forgetting something, namely the one country big enough that they don't need to learn English - or Spanish; what's wrong with saying South America as Brits do, pushed as we are to name any of its constituent countries?) yet he objects to being called white Hispanic, 'an unpleasant term if there ever was one', presumably since Hispanic has been contaminated by association with 'drug addict, criminal, prison inmate, and out-of-wedlock family' (talk about stereotyping!) - unless it's the whiteness he objects to? I guess there's no pleasing this guy, but it reminds me uncomfortably of that fin de siècle period when French Jews were known awkwardly as Israelites as juif had acquired predominantly negative connotations, 'sale juif' being a popular imprecation no matter what your ethnicity or religious affiliation
Spanglish, meanwhile, sneaks in by the back door, from Archduke Francis Ferdinand (the Spanish for Franz is of course Francisco) to 'anyone in his right senses' and, my favourite so far, 'a hysteria in the teacups of the intelligentsia'. I took the misspelt Weltanschauung for a typo until it recurred in the following piece. Polyglotic? The word polyglot is already an adjective (Stavans clearly has 'idiotic' in mind). As for 'conversateur', when it comes to making up your own cod French**, italicized and all, well.. Stavans is clearly out of his depth and then some; at least we're spared Francis 'Franky' Fanon. It was a grave mistake in my view to permit bilingual education in 60s Florida 'in response to a request from Cubans who wished to allow their children to use Spanish in public schools' - note that 'wished' and 'allow', not to mention the weasel word 'use'. Why? The Cold War has mucho to answer for. Sergio de la Pava now - does he write Spanglish, or does he simply write well?
A Hispanist may attribute the remark about translation resembling the back of a Turkish carpet to that mediocre genius Cervantes, but he cannot have phrased it more wittily than James Howell; is this where Howell got it or is Stavans simply ill-informed? Perhaps Alberto Manguel or someone can enlighten us. On page 133 Stavans writes precludes where he surely intended something like presupposes. Like most people writing about translation, language à l'état brut and/or Hebrew, he descends to the most awful piffle; '[t]he Almighty', he tells us, 'is most likely beyond words' - as am I. 'Was the communication between God and Israel in Hebrew mutually understood? Probably not. Probably something was lost in translation.' I like that mutually - and the brace of probablies. You can put the last six words on my tombstone - or This correspondence is now closed
I was going to overlook the typos (since these are reprints no doubt many have a certain pedigree), but when I got to Professor Roy Harris masquerading as Ray I felt I had to speak up. The pictures, too, are dreadful - and on phalli the echt- or do I mean ur-Latina Camille Paglia's Vamps & Tramps is far more fun
* He seems to think it carries the implication of something Roman or even Hellenistic (p21) rather than referring simply to speakers of Romance languages
** The verb, after all, is not 'conversate'. But Stavans has evidently formed the word by analogy with observateur (from Latin observator). Could Dubya himself have done better?

An invaluable Mexican voice

I'm also from Mexico City. I have followed Dr. Stavan's career for years. His views on U.S.-Latin American relations and brilliant and original. This collection is very valuable.
