Much needed synthesis and new work on topic
By Michael J. Murphy
I've used many of the essays in my own writing and teaching and find them eye-opening and instructive. I highly recommend to those interested in the West, or men and masculinity in American history. Expands existing East-coast centric studies of masculinity, and draws together information scattered throughout other, more-general writings on the West. Well documented, accessible prose will be welcomed by amateur experts and academics alike.

Modest_Witness@Second_Millennium.FemaleMan_Meets_OncoMouse: Feminism and Technoscience, by Donna J. Haraway

Modest_Witness@Second_Millenium.FemaleMan_Meets_OncoMouse explores the roles of stories, figures, dreams, theories, facts, delusions, advertising, institutions, economic arrangements, publishing practices, scientific advances, and politics in twentieth-century technoscience.

The book's title is an e-mail address. With it, Haraway locates herself and her readers in a sprawling net of associations more far-flung than the Internet. The address is not a cozy home. There is no innocent place to stand in the world where the book's author figure, FemaleMan, encounters DuPont's controversial laboratory rodent, OncoMouse.

Review
"Donna Haraway writes about science like nobody else. She's exploring new territory, she's drawing new maps, she's onto something--the metaphors come thick and fast. Love her or loathe her, you ignore her at your peril."
-"New Scientist
"Haraway's 'modest witness' is a fascinating figure....In a contribution that is by itself worth the price of the book, Haraway produces a wonderfully thoughtful and complex account of...the interpenetration of biology and capitalism, two central players on the stage of politics....Haraway has produced a volume that richly rewards the hard work and generous literacy it demands of its reader. It is challenging, powerful, and unsettling to comfortable notions worth distressing."
-"LSojourner
"A mixture of passionate polemic, abtruse theory, and technological musing."
-"Detroit Free Press
"A conversation with Haraway is an experience you don't soon forget."
-"Santa Cruz County Sentinel
"It can change the way you think."
-"San Francisco Examiner and Chronicle

Haraway Review
By Jessica L. Kyle
A note to be made to any potential readers regarding the accessibility of this book is that there are two areas in which some background is extremely helpful: critical theory (certain terms and concepts) and Sandra Harding's idea of strong objectivity, which is used, in Haraway's altered form, as a central concept in the book. Neither critical theory terminology nor strong objectivity is explained in enough depth for a reader unfamiliar with them to understand well, and, in the case of the latter, have a strong enough grasp to consider crucial differences in the approaches of Harding and Haraway.

Haraway's stated purpose of the book is that it is an "exercise regime and self-help manual for how not to be literal-minded, while engaging promiscuously in serious moral and political inquiry (...). I also want [readers] to have a good time. Comedy is both object of attention and method" (15). There is a certain tension throughout the book resulting from her dual commitment to the non-literal and playful and to the very serious. Her way of delving deeply into the adventures and symbolic meaning of fictional characters to use them to illustrate her points and her penchant for word-play are rather distracting, and frequently detract from the substance and clarity of her arguments. Additionally, the content of Haraway's book is enmeshed in a perhaps altogether unnecessarily elaborate format, for example, with sections of the book intended to correspond with parts of the study of semiotics.

Yet, Haraway's main argument concerning technoscience, that there is a need to create what has been called a politicoscientific community based on participatory democratic structures, is well supported by her numerous and thought-provoking inquiries into who the actors in technoscience are, who is benefiting, who is suffering, etc. She offers effective criticism of conventional scientific (weak) objectivity, which is grounded in an ideal of the scientist as neutral or value-free, and seeks to build a strong objectivity that will bring into focus the interests and contributions of humans and non-humans who remain unseen or unheard in technoscientific development and practice. I cannot help but wonder, however, why a book intending to promote participatory democratic involvement has been written in so complex a manner that it is inaccessible to countless numbers of people.

I have two main reservations about what Haraway writes. First, she is using her own version of Harding's strong objectivity, which differs in important ways from the original concept. Haraway attempts to generate knowledge from the perspectives of both fictional characters, ones from paintings and ones that Haraway helps invent, and non-humans, and this is much out of keeping with Harding's approach and yet no implications of the altered meaning of this key concept are discussed. Second, Haraway has a clear bias toward, even a romanticization of, certain technoscientific feats like putting fish genes in tomatoes. While she makes no attempts to conceal this bias, I do think it influences her too-quick dismissal of activists working against such human tinkering, as she claims she "cannot hear discussion of disharmonious crosses among organic beings and of implanted alien genes without hearing a racially inflected and xenophobic symphony" (62). The activists to which she is referring simply deserve more credit than this.

Hopefully, the future of science studies
By J. Wiedemer
Haraway's work is stunning in the risks she takes. Refusing to buy into categorical distinctions between disciplines, Haraway references and subreferences science, literature, technology, art, and anything else that could possibly be used to emphasize the cultural production of knowledge. I disagree with just about all of Haraway's conclusions about capitalism, but I love what she says about technology, and find in her work a fresh and innovative alternative to that of stuffy analytic philosophers and overly pedantic sociologists of science. Not the easiest read, but worth a look if you're into SSK, STS, HPS or any other initials having to do with the study of science. Whether you take the book to bed with you at night or toss it out the nearest fifth story window, Haraway's work is bound to impress. Check it out.

Very witty writing
By A Customer
Donna Haraway is without question America's most gifted postmodern cultural critic. In this book, Haraway considers the realms of "technoscience," focussing mostly on genetic research, to consider how this emerging science constructs race, gender, and human relations. Haraway is an extremely witty writer and a true humanitarian, dedicated to questioning those cultural assumptions which hurt so many social groups. Well written, well organized, well illustrated (by Lynn Randolph)... a great book.

Excellent Start
By S. Livingston
There are a number of truly excellent, insightful, and must read essays in this book, covering ideas of the other, gender, orientalism, and black women in art history. Which is my only criticism of the book, it is about art history, not contemporary art and not about the theory itself. The theories are employed within the essays which is helpful to see how that is done, but if you are looking for the source of the theories on race and on race in art, this is not the text. However, there are a lot of great essays, very interesting to read, very accessible, not so ladened with theory as to be unapproachable.

Latino Gay Men and HIV: Culture, Sexuality, and Risk Behavior, by Rafael M. Diaz

With research based on focus group and individual interviews in the United States, as well as a thorough and integrative review of the current literature, Latino Gay Men and HIV discusses the six main sociocultural factors in Latino communities -- machismo, homophobia, family cohesion, sexual silence, poverty and racism--which undermine safe sex practices. In an attempt to explain the alarmingly high incidence of unprotected intercourse in this population, this in-depth cultural and psychological analysis shows how an apparent incongruence between knowledge or intention and behavior can possess its own sociocultural logic and meaning.

Amazon.com Review
Over the past 10 years, AIDS educators have consistently had one truth driven home to them: it is impossible to talk about HIV, AIDS, and safe sex without talking about how people live their lives. This is the message that resonates through Rafael M. Diaz's Latino Gay Men and HIV. Diaz, trained as a social worker, is a Professor of Medicine at University of California, San Francisco, and has created a panoramic portrait of the wide range of issues that Latino gay men deal with in making decisions about safe sex. Discussing issues of poverty, class, ethnicity, and gender as well as concepts of "manliness" in Latin culture, Diaz supplies us with some steps that might be taken to help stop the spread of AIDS among Latino men. Perhaps more important, his writing conveys an insightful, nuanced portrait of gay Latino men's lives. Perceptive, intelligent, and sensitively written, Latino Gay Men and HIV is an important addition to AIDS literature and to the growing body of work that examines the diversity of gay life and culture.

Review
"This is a powerful book that reveals much about the Latinos. ..all this is written here provides a better understanding for researcher who is faced with creating strategies that can help to educate the Latino men abour AIDS.."
-"AIDS Book Review Journal, April 1998 No. 44
"Dr. Diaz poignantly shows that it is not ignorance of the guidelines for safer sex that explains why Latino gay-identified men continue to engage in unsafe sex. For the guidelines to be accepted and practiced, they must be more than commands. The author convincingly argues that they must be embodied in an understanding of the subjective meanings of their sexual unions within a culture that is pervasively homophobic and sexist.."
-John P. De Cecco, Center for Research and Education in Sexuality
"In short, "Latino Gay Men and HIV is an intelligent and well-written book--it is a major contribution to the HIV disease prevention literature. Additionally, it adds to the general literature on race, ethnicity, and disease. Any HIV/AIDS researcher, activist, or provider will find this book accessible and useful, and I should add: important!....Diaz has produced an excellent piece of scholarship."
-Alexander Ortega, "Journal of Gay and Lesbian Medical Association
"While "Latino Gay Men and HIV: Culture, Sexuality, and Risk Behavior is obviously written to target Latino gay men, it will benefit any prevention worker or clinician dealing with HIV and cultural issues. Indeed, it is exemplary of what culturally-informed work can be when it moves beyond superficial rhetoric and reaches for the heart of the matter."
-"Focus AIDS
"The book is well written, and the arguments offered are passionate andcompelling....The book offers innovative models as well as interventions. It should be read by HIV/AIDS researchers and community activists, regardless of the ethnic group with which they work.."
-Maria Cecilia Zea, George Washington University

Excellent text about a very complex issue. While this book focuses on Latino gay men, the psychological barriers concerning risk are very relevant to almost everyone. Definitely worth reading and sharing with friends.

muy informativo i excelente!
By A Customer
Dr. Diaz talks about the multiple factors which may contribute to gay Latino men's susceptibility to contract HIV/AIDS. This book is great in that it does not assume that all Latinos associate gays with whiteness or that those who are attracted to men refrain from identifying as gay. It ends with a promotion of activism and a description of a gay Latino organization that is fighting the disease. Every GLM that I know in San Francisco owns a copy and every gay person of color should go out and buy one for themselves. This book is an important contribution to gay studies and Latino studies.

When For-Profit Meets Nonprofit: Educating Through the Market (Studies in Higher Education), by Jared Bleak

This study addresses the increasing tumult over the commercialization of higher education - a battle over profit and principle, money and mission. While many issues in higher education encompass the mission and values of the university, the operation of for-profit subsidiaries by nonprofit universities provides the potential for an especially contentious clash. Some faculty have been especially vocal in this debate, claiming that the culture of the academy is being irreparably altered as traditional values are being replaced by a corporate style of management, or by some hybrid.

By answering the questions of why for-profit subsidiaries of nonprofit universities were created, how they are governed and managed, and what the nature of the relationship with their nonprofit parent is, this book contributes to a better understanding of the larger controversy over whether universities have become too business-like, too market oriented, and whether they have sold their souls and values in the process. In essence, the book provides a window into whether it is possible to do business like a business - a trend afoot in the academy - and still retain allegiance to core values.

Review
"For me, the most helpful sections of "The Politics of TESOL are the third and X chapter, both of which integrate the concepts of critical pedagogies, contrastive rhetoric, genre analysis, and ESL teacher preparation in ways that are innovative and transparent..."The "Politics of TESOL will help teachers-in-preparation work toward the meta-awareness of what it means to be a professional, the "critical edge" now lacking in the ESL field, that is Ramanathan's objective.."
-Joy M. Reid, author of "Understanding Learning Styles in the Second Language Classroom
"In this wonderfully written book, Vai Ramanathan deftly melds together a number of currently crucial areas in language and literacy studies and applies them insightfully to TESOL. The Politics of TESOL Education is a highly innovative and deeply significant contribution to the field.."
-James Paul Gee, author of "An Introduction to Discourse Analysis: Theory and Method
"Professor Ramanathan's approach and audience focus in this volume have been neglected in TESOL teacher education programs, which have come somewhat late to an ideological view of their practices. Consequently, teacher education programs may be failing to ask future teachers to confront with any depth ideological questions inherent in teaching English.."
-Ilona Leki, Co-editor of the Journal of Second Language Writing and/or Director of ESL at the University of Tennessee (Quote continued below)
"Ramanathan's thoughtful reflections and scholarly depth of understandings provide both a questioning of disciplinary assumptions and a theoretically grounded yet practical way forward to effecting change where possible and necessary. Using the notion ofThinking Communities, Ramanathan's discussion points the way toward moving disciplinary newcomers, i.e., teacher trainees, in the direction of critically analyzing the discipline itself and some of its assumptions. By tackling head on such disputes as those revolving around genre and cultural essentializing, Ramanathan helps teacher educators see how to include this vital aspect of English teaching in their courses and curriculums.."

From Library Journal
Previously published by Garland in 1993, this biographical dictionary includes new entries and an updated bibliography for nearly 250 Native American women born between 1499 and 1965. More than 85 contributors researched tribes ranging from Abenaki to Zuni, with a preponderance of entries related to Cherokee and Sioux women. Alphabetically arranged by surname or the first word of a native name, this well-organized work features familiar historical figures (e.g., Pocahontas, Sacagawea, Woman Chief) and lesser-known contemporary women (e.g., medical illustrator Bonita Wa Wa Calachaw Nunez, linguist and MacArthur fellow Ofelia Zepeda, librarian and author Velma S. Salabiye, activist Shirley Hill Witt). Typical entries are concise and well referenced, with occasional high-quality illustrations. Appendixes organize names by decade of birth, state/province of birth, tribal affiliation, and primary areas of specialization, from activism to medicine to storytelling. The index is organized alphabetically by name, tribe, and related subject (e.g., Lewis and Clark expedition). Even libraries that already own A to Z of Native American Women (LJ 8/98) may wish to purchase this newer work because it features many more women, especially lesser-known contemporary women with interesting stories. Recommended for libraries collecting in women's history and/or Native American studies. Elizabeth Connor, Ross Univ. Sch. of Medicine, Commonwealth of Dominica

From Booklist
This second edition of Native American Women is much enlarged over the first edition, published by Garland in 1993. As always with works by Bataille, who has been writing about native Americans for nearly 25 years, great attention has been paid to detail, and the list of contributors is a veritable who's who of persons working in the field of Native American studies.

The volume contains A-Z biographies of more than 270 women with diverse roles within their cultures, from fur trader Sally Ainse (c. 1728-1823) to lawyer Melody McCoy (1960-) and from traditional medicine practitioner Coocoochee (early 1740s-post 1800) to tribal leader Wilma Mankiller (1945-). Entries are generally less than a page in length and conclude with bibliographic references. The volume has four valuable appendixes: "Primary Areas of Specialization," "Decades of Birth," "State/Province of Birth," and "Tribal Affiliation." The index is a little slim and does not include many of the names and organizations mentioned within the entries. Less than one tenth of the entries have illustrations. The bibliography has citations for several new items published since 1993.

Overall, this volume is exceptional. It offers more than twice the entries of Liz Sonneborn's A to Z of Native American Women (Facts On File, 1998), although Sonneborn's entries are generally longer and include more illustrations. Recommended for academic libraries as well as public and high-school libraries that need a new resource in this area. RBB

Review
"The strengths of the volume are found in its readable entries, end references, and diverse coverage. A good title for undergraduate programs and large public libraries, and a good general source for both women's and Native American studies."

Review

"Sociology Looks at the Arts comes at exactly the right moment in the historical relationship of the arts and the social sciences. From the very outset, with the personal narrative of her exploration of the musical worlds opened to her by the magic of a great musician – Miles Davis – she reveals her position that the aesthetic experience should be taken as seriously as the socio-economic-political context that enables it. From that point on, Rothenberg draws the reader inexorably into her understanding of the complexity of that relationship, the changing nature of the both the contexts and the art forms in which they emerge, and their meanings for human beings. She succeeds in giving due attention to the changing character of globalization, commercialization, and the revolutions - political, economic, cultural – that nudge social meanings of what constitutes ART from one function to another over time."

-Vera L. Zolberg, Sociology, New School for Social Research, and author of Constructing a Sociology of the Arts

"Sociology Looks at the Arts is a masterful invitation to the sociology of art. Written in an accessible and engaging style, enlivened by timely and relevant examples, this book presents an original synthesis of diverse approaches to the social analysis of art and culture. Rothenberg has provided an exciting addition to the too sparse introductory literature in this field. Her book will be an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to teach and learn about the relationship between social structure, aesthetic experience and works of art."

-Alain Quemin, Sociology, University Paris-8, France, Past President of Research Committee # 37, Sociology of the Arts, of the International Sociological Association

"Rothenberg looks at the worlds of the arts through a variety of sociology's sharpest lenses, accompanied by a wealth of delightful images and quotes that make this book a pleasure to read and teach."

-James M. Jasper, Sociology, CUNY Graduate Center, Author of The Art of Moral Protest

"Stepping into the divide between social science and artistic creation, Julia Rothenberg's book provides not only a superbly researched introduction to the way social scientists investigate culture, but her nuanced reading of contemporary art clarifies ongoing debates about political agency and activist aesthetics. Sociology Looks at the Arts will swiftly become an essential textbook for anyone teaching on art as a form of social production."

-Gregory Sholette, Studio Art and Graphic Design, CUNY Queens College, and Author of Dark Matter: Art and Politics in the Age of Enterprise Culture

Educating for Diversity and Social Justice (Routledge Research in Education), by Amanda Keddie

Educating for Diversity and Social Justice foregrounds the personal stories of educators who are engaging the space of schooling as a site of possibility for realizing the goals of social justice. It is a book inspired by a vision of education as a practice of freedom where young people – especially those who are marginalized – can learn that they have a voice and the power to change their world for the better. Drawing on the work of US philosopher Nancy Fraser, the book examines issues of justice and schooling in relation to three dimensions: political, cultural and economic. While its focus is on research within three Australian case study schools, the book provides an international perspective of these dimensions of justice in western education contexts as they impact on the schooling performance of marginalized students. Towards greater equity for these students, the book presents a comprehensive scaffold for thinking about and addressing issues of schooling, diversity and social justice. Through practical examples from the case study research, the book illustrates the complexities and possibilities associated with schools providing inclusive environments where marginalized voices are heard (political justice), where marginalized culture is recognized and valued (cultural justice) and where marginalized students are supported to achieve academically towards accessing the material benefits of society (economic justice).
