God's Gym: Divine Male Bodies of the Bible, by Stephen Moore

In this strikingly original work, Stephen Moore considers God's male bodies--the body of Yahweh in the Hebrew Bible, and the Father of Jesus Christ, and Jesus himself in the New Testament--and our obsessive earthly quest for a perfect human form. God's Gym is about divinity, physical pain, and the visions of male perfectability.

Weaving together his obsession with human anatomy and dissection, an interest in the technologies of torture, the cult of physical culture, and an expert knowledge of biblical criticism, Moore explains the male narcissism at the heart of the biblical God. God's Gym is an intensely personal book, brimming with our culture's phobias and fascinations about male perfectability.

From Library Journal
Moore (Poststructrualism and the New Testament, Fortress, 1995) explores torture, dissection, and male physique. Unlike Howard Eilberg-Schwartz in God's Phallus (LJ 8/94), which focused on the known and unknown features of God, Moore states, "You too can have a body like his, if only you are willing to pay the price." Moore begins by graphically examining torture and the transformation torture can produce. "Dissection," his second essay, looks at the anatomy of the Fourth Gospel and an autopsy of Jesus Christ, i.e., Bible study. The last essay looks at Jesus' bodybuilding career and his workout routine. What ties these essays together are the subjection and control found in the Bible. A scholarly work for larger collections.?L. Kriz, West Des Moines Lib., Ia.

Review
"Bias has been transformed from something denied or ousted, to something that is to be recognized and controlled, to vital lenses for seeing anew...bias might be renamed slant, perspective, interest, concern, even ideology. Such is the case in Moore's remarkably engaging and sometimes outrageous three studies....."
-"Religious Studies Review, July 1999
"Stephen Moore may well be the most brilliant NT scholar publishing today ... And God's Gym is his best book so far ... This little book brims with fascinating readings, packaged in exquisite prose, and informed by sophisticated literary theory and cultural studies."
-"Journal of Biblical Literature

Exquisite, excruciating, and very entertaining
By graphik_persona
Not being either a Christian or an Exegete this book is still a great gore-soaked read. The attempt at modern-day analysis of the Bible is nothing new, but Moore's correlation between Biblical myth and body-building, torture and forensic dissection ports this book into a realm of the horrific. And for this reason I found this to be a very intelligent and entertaining read. Perhaps because I'm a fan of the horror genre in general, the detailed evisceration of the biblical narrative spliced up into fleshy parts centered on the knowable aspects of modern forensic paraphernalia as well as the intimate extremes of human suffering and vanity gave the essays an engagingly unique and in-depth approach. The persuasiveness of Moore's examination is both subtle and highly effected, yet one comes to the conclusion that it is meant to be nothing more than a clever interpretation by an overactive imagination run wild with impish conviction. Definitely a recommended read for those who want an interesting `take' on the Bible, or even better, for those with a horror-genre affliction looking for works whom lend that particular analysis towards even the most peripheral or mundane.

A superb study of masculinity and the Bible
By deafguy
God's Gym is a fantastic piece of literature. The author is smart, the writing is elegant, and while the book is witty and entertaining, it makes very serious points about violence in the Bible and the hypermasculinity of the god of Israel and Jesus as they are portrayed in the Bible. Moore uses comparisons that are strange at first sight (critical biblical scholarship set next to early physiology and anatomy writings about dissections; the gospels' descriptions of Jesus set next to the rhetoric of modern bodybuilding magazines), but the comparisons are highly thought-provoking. And again, Moore's writing style is simply dazzling. If you are interested in gender studies and the Bible, there is no better place to start than God's Gym.

Amazing - for those unafraid of the nontraditional!
By A Customer
"Whatever does not kill me makes me stronger... but Jesus says, 'Even what DOES kill me, makes me INFINITELY stronger!'" A terrific study of the archetype of "perfecting the imperfect human being" in torture, bodybuilding, and New Testament theology. (Yes, you read that right!) This might sound pretty wacky, but Moore has solid backup for all his points. Strongly recommended for readers who aren't afraid of a shocking but plausible look behind the surface of their beliefs! (Seriously, this book is WELL worth a look!)
