About the Author
Matthew Muehlbauer is currently on the faculty with Austin Peay State University, but has taught military history at schools including the United States Military Academy and Rutgers University.
David J. Ulbrich is Assistant Professor of History at Rogers State University. He is author of the award-winning Preparing for Victory: Thomas Holcomb and the Making of the Modern Marine Corps, 1936-1943.

A great piece of work and outstanding resource

Majored in History in college (and in full disclosure, went to college and knew Matt at the time; we were acquaintances on friendly terms and I last saw him at my 25th reunion where he told me re this book).
Putting aside any personal factors re one of the authors, I can as a veteran of numerous history book read-a-thons of my own making that this one stands out among ones discussing mil. doctrine and policy in the modern era. Most are predictable and frankly lack imagination in interpretation and insight re cause and effect, even when written by intelligent mil. professionals and/or historians. This one puts most such books to shame and ought to be on the reading list of every aspiring US mil. officer. Officers are charged w/ being able to see The Big Picture along w/ showing and exercising leadership and sound judgment bolstered by courage and a focus of purpose to fulfill missions. A solid grounding in Big Picture doctrine helps with all these req'ts and this book is right on the money for it.

If you are a serious student of military history, please place this on your reading list. It is well worth reading especially in these days when so many voices keep encouraging us to just put "boots on the ground." This is an important work and should be on every bookshelf, if you love history.

It is a good and to the point survey on US military history

It is a good and to the point survey on US military history. Given its scope and perspective, I cannot hold the typical US-centric point of view on World War II that treats USSR contributions as a side note against the project.
I am not satisfied with the quality of copy-editing. From a major publishing house, you could expect editors to catch more missing articles, double articles, and the like.
More important, though, since maps are such a significant factor in teaching and studying (military) history, simple errors like in Map 13.1 "The World during the Cold War" (in the 2014 paperback edition) should not have slipped by: What is indicated here as "FRG"/West Germany actually shows post-1990 reunified Germany and what the map shows as "GDR"/East Germany is actually Poland. Embarrassing, especially since FRG and GDR are the only two countries labeled on this world map, apart from the US and USSR.
