The State of Sex is a study of Nevada’s brothels that situates the nation's only legal brothel industry in the political economy of contemporary tourism. Nevada is part of the "new American heartland," as its pastimes, people, and politics have become more central to the nation. The rise of a service and leisure economy over the past sixty years has propelled sexuality into the heart of contemporary markets. Yet, neoliberal laws in the United States promote business but limit sexual commerce.
How have Nevada's legal brothels survived, while the rest of the country criminalizes prostitution? How do brothels operate? Who works in them? This book brings social theory on globalizing economies, politics, leisure consumption, and emotional labor in interactive service work together with research on contemporary prostitution and sexual commerce. The authors employ an innovative, multi-method sociological approach, combining historical analysis of how the brothels came to be with over a decade's worth of ethnographic research on the current state of the industry.

A Book for the Ages
By Korski
The State of Sex: Tourism, Sex, and Sin in the New American Heartland is an innovative and long-overdue study of the only place in America where prostitution is legal. There has never been anything on the topic worth noting prior to this seminal effort, and now we have these three women from the University of Nevada at Las Vegas who, for fifteen years, have thought about and discussed and nicely and persuasively put into perspective like few people could possibly do everything anyone would ever want to know about legal prostitution in the suburbs of the New American Heartland. The amount of fieldwork they have done is staggering, impressive by any standard, and they are to be commended for their ability to get brothel owners and madams and the women in the brothels to candidly come forth with intimate and genuinely revealing insights into their often secret and transformative lives. We have here, in this brilliant study, novel insights into conceptions of the "body," how one conceives of one's identify and sense of self where one is selling or "renting" access to a transformative existential being, and how all of this plays out in the arena of men seeking to fulfill misguided fantasies about sex and womanhood, all in the globalizing context of everyone's spiraling angst and dizzying subconscious predicament in a post-postmodern, post-post colonial world that is changing at a mesmerizing rate, due in large part, as the authors so insightfully note--drawing no less on the incredible insights of David Harvey and his novel take on the dialectic of late capitalism--to the multi-billion dollar pornography industry, a miasmic web of post-post structuralist transformations and permutations that we are only now beginning to get the first arresting insights into, thanks in large part to the pioneering work of these innovative women of unparalleled credentials.
The reader can only be made admiringly numb by the prodigious amount of research found in this strikingly impressive book, suggested by an incredible sixteen pages of references, a mere fraction of what the authors are rumored to have in their extensive files on this subject long of interest and all but ignored until this study made its auspicious appearance on the feminist-queer-transgendered scene. One can only imagine how difficult it must have been to get inside 16 of the 30 or so brothels in the state, an accomplishment without parallel; and, no less, to be able to get five of the women to candidly talk about the difficulties and innumerable perplexities of negotiating the many and complex and anonymous male bodies that appear before them in what are euphemistically known as "lineups"--and then in the bedroom where men come forth with hyper-masculinized and paternalistic presentations of the displaced self in unfamiliar and challenging genderized spaces where existential permutations transform one's historicized and mutating present into ever-changing globalized selves and unrecognizable bodies that are at once detached and yet paradoxically attached and therefore must cope with demands that can never be predicted and can have mutilating effects on the ego, changes not subject to known forms of post-Jungian and pre-Freudian analyses, even taking into account long repressed dream sequences in which the id invariably overrides the propulsive determinants and tendencies of the rather primitive superego.
In short, one has to read not once but twice, and in a proper and studied frame of mind, to begin to grasp the many and multiple and profound insights not only into the world of prostitution but in equal measure into the even more difficult fractal geometries of genderized and feminized women as first noted by St. Francis de Asis and given exegesis in the writings of Thomas Nagel. This is a work--The State of Sex--that, surely, will have implications for genderized feminist and queer and transgendered studies that will reverberate for decades through the great world of academia.
On a final note, and hardly worth mentioning, there are a few minor typographical errors in the bibliography, and perhaps one or two conceptual distinctions that might benefit from fine tuning, but nothing that detracts in the least from a book that cannot fail to be seen as setting a new standard for research and insight in the social sciences.
