Cultivating an Ethical School, by Robert J. Starratt

Often the school is left as an institution seemingly ethically neutral, leaving untouched questions about whether the school itself is a site of injustice toward both educators and children. Springing from his well-known Building an Ethical School, Robert J. Starratt now looks more closely at the educational leader’s responsibility to ensure that the whole fabric of the educational process reflects an ethical philosophy of education.

Starratt argues that the work of educating young people is by its very nature an ethical work as well as an intellectual work, and that this work inescapably engages educators and their pupils with an academic curriculum, a social curriculum, and a civic curriculum. Cultivating an Ethical School lays a foundation for educators seeking to cultivate a comprehensive ethical educating environment. The second half of the book then takes up the more specific perspectives on teaching and learning that constitute the heart of cultivating an ethical school. Starratt provides examples of how an ethical school can expose students to a variety of perspectives on the challenges they will be called upon to face in the worlds of culture, nature, and society. This valuable book shows leaders and educators the importance of organizing a curriculum and a pedagogy that simultaneously respect and cultivate the intellectual, personal, and social qualities of being human.

Review

"....in this recent volume, Starratt (Boston College) examines the philosophical and psychological foundations underlying his recommendations in the more practice-oriented sections of the earlier work. The author's long experience in the educational trenches is apparent in his treatment of the complex intellectual and social issues involved with ethical teaching in schools." ― K. Ryan, emeritus, Boston University, CHOICE

Advances in Social Work Practice with the MilitaryFrom Brand: Routledge

With the United States’ involvement in numerous combat operations overseas, the need for civilian social workers with the clinical skills necessary to work with members of the military returning from combat, as well as their families, has never been more critical. In this practical and important book, each chapter is written by specialists in a particular area devoted to the care of service members and includes case material to demonstrate assessment and intervention approaches. The reader is introduced to the world of the military and the subsequent development of mental health services for returning men and women. Chapters look at special populations of service members with specific needs based directly on their experience in the military, discussing post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, sexual harassment and assault during their service, and the physiology of the war zone experience. The challenges faced by reintegrating service men and women are explored in detail and include family issues, suicide, and substance use disorders. A section on services available to returning service members looks at those offered by the Veterans Administration and at the use of animal-assisted interventions. The book concludes with a section devoted to unique concerns for the practitioner and explores ethical concerns they may face and their own needs as clinicians working with this population.

Review

"This book is a significant, distinctive, timely, and very welcome contribution to the social work practice literature. Its attention to military culture, special populations, clinical challenges, family, and ethical implications are particularly noteworthy."

Raymond Scurfield, DSW, LCSW, Vietnam veteran; Professor Emeritus of Social Work, University of Southern Mississippi

"I was most impressed by this book which addresses key issues faced by social workers and practitioners who are challenged to provide expertise and skill in this very demanding field. It makes a very significant contribution to social work literature on interventions with soldiers and their families when on the battlefield and upon returning home. I am most certain that many practitioners and their clients will benefit greatly from this unique book."

Rachel Dekel, PhD, Associate Professor of Social Work, Bar-Ilan University, Israel

Comprehensive, up-to-date information invaluable for today's military social worker.
By Cynthia Danute Cekauskas, LCSW
As a military veteran (Navy Hospital Corpsman) and a veteran federal civil service social worker of many years, I was happy to find that someone had taken it upon themselves to prepare a book on modern military social work with the active duty and veterans of today's wars. The last book on this subject, that of military social work, Social Work Practice in the Military, was copyrighted in 1999--a good thirteen (13) years ago and two (2) years before the United States became engaged in military action in the Middle East. An update was certainly needed.

The editor of this book, Joan Beder, DSW, is a professor at the Wurzeiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University in New York. She has been a clinical social worker for over 30 years and maintains a private clinical practice in Long Island, New York. She came up with the idea of compiling such a book after watching the HBO documentary ALIVE DAY in 2007. As she explains in the Preface the book is made up of Five Parts: The World of the Military, Special Populations, Clinical Challenges, Services and Unique Concerns for Practicioners. Each chapter is written by a specialist who works in a particular area devoted to the care of the service member and his/her family.

The chapters I found particularly helpful were located in Parts II, III and V. In Part II Special Populations, Chapters 3 Civlian Social Worker's Guide to the Treatment of War-Induced Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, 4 Care Coordination in Military Traumatic Brain Injury, 7 Helping the Combat Medic and Corpsman:Adapting to Both Primary and Secondary Traumatic Stress Down Range and Beyond and 8 The Battle Within:Understanding the Physiology of Warzone Experience were most relevant. Of particular concern, that of the high rate of suicide among returning veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan combat experience. was addressed in Chapter 11 Assessing and Responding to Suicidal Risks Among OIF/OEF Veterans located in Part III Clinical Challenges. Finally in Part V Unique Concerns for Practitioners the editor addresses the readiness and well-being issue of the practitioner him/herself with Chapters 17 Ethical Challenges When Working with the Military and 18 The Cost of Caring Requires Self Care.

I would highly recommend this book to all those presently working with returning servicemembers and their families. Much of what is written in these chapters I experienced myself in my last position with the Department of the Army when I worked at Winn Army Community Hospital in Fort Stewart, Georgia between 2006 and 2007.

Social Work in the Military Class
By Ashley
I was required to purchase this book for a college course, and it's one of my favorite books of the semester. It's an easy read and it incorporates realistic case studies to drive the point through. I deducted 1 star because it can be a bit repetitive at times.

The State of Sex: Tourism, Sex and Sin in the New American Heartland (Contemporary Sociological Perspectives), by Barbara G. Brents, Cryst

The State of Sex is a study of Nevada’s brothels that situates the nation's only legal brothel industry in the political economy of contemporary tourism. Nevada is part of the "new American heartland," as its pastimes, people, and politics have become more central to the nation. The rise of a service and leisure economy over the past sixty years has propelled sexuality into the heart of contemporary markets. Yet, neoliberal laws in the United States promote business but limit sexual commerce.

How have Nevada's legal brothels survived, while the rest of the country criminalizes prostitution? How do brothels operate? Who works in them? This book brings social theory on globalizing economies, politics, leisure consumption, and emotional labor in interactive service work together with research on contemporary prostitution and sexual commerce. The authors employ an innovative, multi-method sociological approach, combining historical analysis of how the brothels came to be with over a decade's worth of ethnographic research on the current state of the industry.

A Book for the Ages
By Korski
The State of Sex: Tourism, Sex, and Sin in the New American Heartland is an innovative and long-overdue study of the only place in America where prostitution is legal. There has never been anything on the topic worth noting prior to this seminal effort, and now we have these three women from the University of Nevada at Las Vegas who, for fifteen years, have thought about and discussed and nicely and persuasively put into perspective like few people could possibly do everything anyone would ever want to know about legal prostitution in the suburbs of the New American Heartland. The amount of fieldwork they have done is staggering, impressive by any standard, and they are to be commended for their ability to get brothel owners and madams and the women in the brothels to candidly come forth with intimate and genuinely revealing insights into their often secret and transformative lives. We have here, in this brilliant study, novel insights into conceptions of the "body," how one conceives of one's identify and sense of self where one is selling or "renting" access to a transformative existential being, and how all of this plays out in the arena of men seeking to fulfill misguided fantasies about sex and womanhood, all in the globalizing context of everyone's spiraling angst and dizzying subconscious predicament in a post-postmodern, post-post colonial world that is changing at a mesmerizing rate, due in large part, as the authors so insightfully note--drawing no less on the incredible insights of David Harvey and his novel take on the dialectic of late capitalism--to the multi-billion dollar pornography industry, a miasmic web of post-post structuralist transformations and permutations that we are only now beginning to get the first arresting insights into, thanks in large part to the pioneering work of these innovative women of unparalleled credentials.

The reader can only be made admiringly numb by the prodigious amount of research found in this strikingly impressive book, suggested by an incredible sixteen pages of references, a mere fraction of what the authors are rumored to have in their extensive files on this subject long of interest and all but ignored until this study made its auspicious appearance on the feminist-queer-transgendered scene. One can only imagine how difficult it must have been to get inside 16 of the 30 or so brothels in the state, an accomplishment without parallel; and, no less, to be able to get five of the women to candidly talk about the difficulties and innumerable perplexities of negotiating the many and complex and anonymous male bodies that appear before them in what are euphemistically known as "lineups"--and then in the bedroom where men come forth with hyper-masculinized and paternalistic presentations of the displaced self in unfamiliar and challenging genderized spaces where existential permutations transform one's historicized and mutating present into ever-changing globalized selves and unrecognizable bodies that are at once detached and yet paradoxically attached and therefore must cope with demands that can never be predicted and can have mutilating effects on the ego, changes not subject to known forms of post-Jungian and pre-Freudian analyses, even taking into account long repressed dream sequences in which the id invariably overrides the propulsive determinants and tendencies of the rather primitive superego.

In short, one has to read not once but twice, and in a proper and studied frame of mind, to begin to grasp the many and multiple and profound insights not only into the world of prostitution but in equal measure into the even more difficult fractal geometries of genderized and feminized women as first noted by St. Francis de Asis and given exegesis in the writings of Thomas Nagel. This is a work--The State of Sex--that, surely, will have implications for genderized feminist and queer and transgendered studies that will reverberate for decades through the great world of academia.

On a final note, and hardly worth mentioning, there are a few minor typographical errors in the bibliography, and perhaps one or two conceptual distinctions that might benefit from fine tuning, but nothing that detracts in the least from a book that cannot fail to be seen as setting a new standard for research and insight in the social sciences.

From Library Journal
The Egyptian-Israeli negotiations that eventually led to the Camp David Accords not only resulted in the signing of a peace agreement between Israel and a major Arab state but also permanently changed the political and strategic map of the Middle East. In this highly readable and informative book, Stein, a historian of the Middle East and former director of the Carter Center at Emory University, gives a detailed analysis of crucial events that brought about this sea change in Arab-Israeli relations. Although the book focuses on the period from October 1973 to November 1977, Stein provides background information for a better understanding of the intricacies of the negotiating process. Through interviews with a host of participants in the Arab-Israeli peace talks, he also provides unique insight into the process of peacemaking. Highly recommended for scholars of the contemporary Middle East, journalists, and practitioners of modern diplomacy.ANader Entessar, Spring Hill Coll., Mobile, AL

Review
"Anyone interested in getting a better grasp of the origins of the current Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations should consult this timely and well-informed book.... Drawing on a wealth of Arab, Israeli, American, and Soviet sources, including interviews with decisionmakers and key participants in the peace process, Stein has painted the picture on a wide canvas, without losing sight of the small detail. His is probably the best and most comprehensive account of the making of the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty, not least owing to the dispassionate and even-handed treatment of the various participants in the process.."
-Efraim Karsh, "Canadian Journal of History
"By combining rich and diverse sources, Stein has produced a study unusual for its freshness and credibility...a major contribution to the existing literature on the peace process in its crucial, founding stage, and, as such, is essential reading for those interested in understanding the process as it continues to unfold. "Middle East Journal ...finely researched study of the Arab-Israeli peace process... Recommended for upper-division undergraduates and above."
-"Choice, April 2000
"This masterly study offers us diplomatic history at its best. Anyone interested in Arab-Israeli affairs, conflict resolution, and the art of negotiation will find this book essential, enjoyable, and rewarding."
-Itamar Rabinovich, author of "Waging Peace: Israel and the Arabs at the End of the Century
""Heroic Diplomacy is indeed remarkable. For the first time, a talented historian has written a lively chronicle of the 30-year Arab-Israeli peace process by drawing on all of the involved parties--Arab, Israeli, and American. Itcontributes greatly toward understanding the complex diplomatic history of the Arab-Israeli conflict."
-Samuel W. Lewis, U.S. Ambassador to Israel, 1977-1985
"Stein's well-written, thoroughly researched account of the process that led to the Camp David Accords is the most comprehensive and insightful review of this political era. "Heroic Diplomacy contains a host of new information, and is a coherent and compelling story."
-Joel Singer, former Legal Advisor of Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and drafter of the Oslo Agreements

Student Reviews Stein's "Heroic Diplomacy"
By A Customer
As a student at Emory University, I had the unique pleasure of taking a course on the history of the modern Middle East with Kenneth W. Stein. As I learned in the classroom and later when I was finally able to read Heroic Diplomacy, Stein is indeed an expert in the complex and intricate field of Arab-Israeli conflict and in the confusing nature of the peace negotiations. In his classroom, I began to understand the conflicting goals of the major players in the region, and to appreciate the crucial role of Arab, Israeli and outside leadership in elucidating and beginning to resolve these issues. Heroic Diplomacy masterfully expounds upon these themes through a detailed account beginning with the October War of 1973, and continuing through the subsequent negotiations that ultimately led to the Camp David Accords and the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty.
This book is especially unique and important in that it draws from interviews with over eighty participants in the actual military and political negotiations between Egypt and Israel. The author conducted personal interviews with prominent leaders in the peace process, ranging from U.S. President Jimmy Carter to Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir and Jordan's King Hussein. Stein thoroughly examines the issues and sacrifices that the leaders confronted, particularly through his detailed discussions of Sadat, Kissinger, Carter and Begin.
But perhaps even more interesting, the book chronicles many of the intricacies of the negotiations through interviews with low-level career diplomats, foreign service officers and statesmen. These individuals, as Stein discusses in his introduction, have virtually become the archive of the Arab-Israeli peace process. Since few if any of them have written personal memoirs of the small portion of history they affected, Heroic Diplomacy might be the only account that will remain from their contribution to Arab-Israeli diplomacy. Information obtained from these interviews, combined with the insights gained from his discussions with world leaders, fills the book with a fascinating and timely history of this particularly contentious period.
Heroic Diplomacy is a critically important contribution to any understanding of the Arab-Israeli peace process. Stein confronts a complex and often emotional question: how could Egypt and Israel, two nations that seemed utterly opposed to one another, shock the world by signing the Camp David Peace Accords in 1978? This historical account of the negotiations answers that question in great detail. Further, the book is written in a clear and engaging way, and can be appreciated regardless of whether or not one is already a scholar of the Middle East.
I feel fortunate to have shared the classroom with Dr. Stein, and this book is a testament to his knowledge and expertise. As such, Heroic Diplomacy is crucial for anyone interested in the Arab-Israeli conflict. And for those less fortunate, who have not been able to spend substantial time studying with the author, it is a must-read.

In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the White House, the Whitcombs provide an irresistible chronological overview of daily life in the presidential residence. Divided into 42 chapters representing each succeeding administration, this survey is brimming with fun facts, tantalizing tidbits, and memorable anecdotes detailing two centuries of domestic bliss and strife in the White House. From George Washington, who chose the sight and initiated work on the presidential mansion, to Bill Clinton, whose well-documented White House escapades titillated and scandalized the nation, each individual president has contributed to the mystique of the most readily recognized home in the U.S. Together with scores of drawings, portraits, and photographs, the breezy text chronicles the significant physical, social, and emotional changes wrought by each First Family as they sought to personalize daily life in the White House. A broadly appealing slice of Americana. Margaret Flanagan

Charming and educational: nonfiction that you can't put down
By Brian Melendez
Father-daughter team John and Claire Whitcomb have woven a tapestry of American history from the perspective of the White House and the nation's first families. Their command of detail is impressive: not only the familiar trivia about decorations and furniture that you can find in other White House histories, but how each first family related to the staff, how each president financed the home's operation (paying until modern times out of his own pocket for the staff, public entertainment, and refurbishing), and how the White House has both changed and changed with the nation's concept of the connection between the people, their leaders, and their house.
I have been reading about American history and presidential trivia for three decades and, instead of running into the same familiar overused anecdotes on which so many books draw, this book contained educational and entertaining surprises on every page. The book portrays our presidents as human beings, and tells a story not only about their habits and routines, but about their emotions and their lives in and out of the public eye. The image that struck me the most was President Pierce--mourning his son's recent death--spending his first night as president nearly alone in the White House, sleeping "on a mattress on the floor, wrapped in his coat to keep warm," because his belongings were still packed, his grieving wife had not yet arrived in Washington, the Fillmores had not quite moved out, and the furniture was in disarray from the inaugural celebration. The book is full of such human anecdotes. I could hardly put it down.

Real Life in the White House
By A Customer
Excellent book about the First Families, history of the building itself and just good old fashioned American History. As a history buff, I found this excellent reading and extremely informative. Interestingly enough, Mr. Clinton was not the only soundrel who lived there and the election of Dec 2000 was not the first. The similarity of that and the past is downright spooky.

OK for newcomers to the subject
By DeepReader
Since this is the first book I've ever read on the subject, I was not aware of the factual errors that other reviewers have noted. On the other hand, there were places where I wondered whether the book had an editor who was awake or sober (dangling participles; sentences that had no conceivable relationship to the paragraph they were in; repeated prepositions not noticed during revising or proofreading, events alluded to without explanation and then discussed in full later, etc.). I've returned the book to the library, so I can't give each page and mistake.

I was disappointed in the book especially when it got closer to modern times, because often it seemed to be just hitting the highlights of the life of a particular president or the main events - and very few, at that - of his presidency. I was really interested in 'real life in the White House' and felt that it got formulaic after awhile: the arrival of the new first family; kitchen arrangements; prices of parties; who redecorated what part of the house and in what way. OK, fine... but are choices of wallpaper and furniture and how much first ladies spent on dresses 'real life at the White House'?

Almost entirely missing was the 'real life' led by the people who were in the White House from one administration to the next. I mean the servants and other staff. Sure, we heard about Secret Service agents and there's the occasional quote from a chef who is fed up with low-brow presidential taste in meals or an anecdote about how servants behaved, and repeated anecdotes about dishes (sometimes the same information, as though the two writers didn't consult each other about whether they'd already explained something in another chapter). But frankly, I would have been more interested in an account of what really goes on, day to day, in the White House, and especially the perspective of the people who work in close proximity to the families living in the White House. To my mind, 'real life' has to do with real people, really living. If anyone asked me about 'real life' in my house, I would not tell them about wallpaper, plates, clothing budgets and household repairs. I'd talk about people and how they related to each other and what they did from day to day, and I'd give more detail about special occasions than just who was there and how much it cost.

In the end, I feel like I know three things about living in the White House: it has become more and more like a prison; you can expect to shake hands a LOT if you're the president or first lady; there's no privacy. Oh, and also that being president is likely to take years off your life, if it doesn't outright kill you.

I felt that the stories were told from a distance; that the information was probably gleaned from already-published books, with no new research. I didn't have the sense that the writers tried to find first-hand accounts from people who had served in the White House in the 1800s, nor that they had interviewed personally anyone who worked in the White House and could talk about the nuts and bolts of day-to-day life. How, for example, did the WH go from being open to everyone - the people's house - to being so tightly secure that there are spy-holes in the doors of the Oval Office so that the president can't so much as hiccup without someone peeking in on him? In the section on the Clintons, we get two examples from Mrs Clinton about how the staff just sort of appeared and took over when she wanted to cook something personally for her daughter (so, finally, a real 'domestic' detail of family relationships being affected by conditions in the White House, albeit a story that was probably already in the public domain). How did it get to the point that in the private quarters, the First Lady can't even walk into the kitchen to make an omelette without staff bustling in and taking over? And why does the President put up with it? Why does it take 40 vehicles to protect the president if he wants to leave the White House and go for an early-morning jog?

We were told simply how it is, but we didn't get the background of how it got to be that way, and why no president or first lady ever put his or her foot down and said, 'this is ridiculous.' I would like to have heard the reasoning of the Secret Service in being so paranoid about the president's security that he has to have a panic button in the toilet, for heaven's sake: do they really expect an assassin to come up through the toilet bowl?

So I'm still waiting for a book that tells me about 'real life' and not things that I feel I could glean from newspapers or other widely-available public sources.

If you've never read about the White House or life in it, then this is a reasonable place to start. At the very least, it will help you put all the presidents in order in your mind, and give you a broad overview of who the presidents were - I really felt it was more about that than about 'real life' in the White House, despite repeated themes of painting and repairs and rats and redecorating that recurred so predictably as the book became more formulaic.

For people who have read widely in this area, this book will probably tell them nothing new and may even feel like a waste of time.

From Library Journal
"Strategic," for the purposes of this volume, relates to nuclear power. These 12 essays, assembled at the University of Georgia Center for International Trade and Security, discuss aspects of the sorry state of U.S.-India diplomacy. The book is divided into three sections: "Broad Strokes on the Strategic Canvas," "Security and Nonproliferation Issues," and "The Regional Context." The second section includes recommendations for the governments in question to follow in order to improve relations. Because the contributors are so diverse, there is some duplication of content; particularly annoying is an excessive use of acronyms, which requires constant consultation of the glossary. Sadly, no contributor appears to have studied the personalities that have made relations between the two countries so acidic for 50 years. Only highly specialized libraries dealing with nuclear issues will want this title.ADonald Johnson, Univ. of Minnesota Lib., Minneapolis

Review
"Blending history with analysis of current affairs and future dilemmas, these essays provide a clear picture of the perceptual, political, legislative and bureaucratic hurdles that the U.S. and India must negotiate if they are to build a relationship befitting the world's largest democracies."
-George Perkovich, Director, Secure World Program, W. Alton Jones Foundation and author of "India's Nuclear Bomb
""Engaging India is indeed a timely and significant volume, which puts together a wide array of scholarship and analysis on several crucial aspects of the relationship between India and the United States. It is important that a book on this subject be an intelligent appreciation of facts, various views and differing standpoints. "Engaging India does this expertly and is a creditable achievement."
-Naresh Chandra, Ambassador of India to the United States
"In "Engaging India, a well-informed group of authors provide broad insight into India'srelations with the rest of the world in the shadow of India's 1998 nuclear tests. This book should be read by anyone who wants to understand how these relations developed and where they are headed."
-Clifford E. Singer, Director, Program in Arms Control, Disarmament, and International Security, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Engaging India: A very "engaging" collection
By Anurag Srivastava
Engaging India is an apt name for a collection of foreignpolicy essays about the world's two largest democracies since thebook, as a whole, delivers successfully on all four interpretations of its title.
Its first and most obvious interpretation was employed by the US Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, when she presented the newly published book to the Indian External Affairs Minister, Jaswant Singh on his recent visit to the US on 28 September, 1999 and commented "Shall we ... [re-engage India in bilateral talks]?" Even before the embers from Pokharan II had died down, the Indian administration had shown its willingness to bring US to the diplomatic table. Not much has been accomplished, however, given the disparate views the two nations have about their strategic interests. The US feels that the members of the G5-and no other nation-have a quasi-birthright to develop a nuclear armament. India vociferously disagrees, citing China and Pakistan as perceived threats and believes that non-proliferation should either be across the board, or not at all. A large segment of the Indian population, especially the BJP government that conducted the tests, feels that India's docile past has weakened its strategic and security interests. However, both India and the US agree upon the imperative need to institutionalize control measures that would ensure peace and harmony in western Asia and avoid an arms race with Pakistan-an eventuality that can seriously disrupt the thin balance of power in that area and empower the Islamic fundamentalists. Several essays in this collection are devoted to threshing out the dynamics that govern these issues.
The essays discuss in great detail the primary reasons why the US finds India so "engaging" or appealing-its developing defense arsenal. Indo-US relations have been traced from the Sino-Indian conflict in the sixties, through the Cold War era, to the present day. Besides Indo-US strategic concerns, the book also explores the need and prospects for Indo-US cooperation that is needed to develop and control technology for both peaceful and defense purposes. Although the imperatives dictating nuclear safety, energy, and space are discussed in substantial detail, the primary focus of the essays are the weapons of mass destruction (nuclear, chemical, biological and toxic), their mode of deployment, and the main issues surrounding non-proliferation export control measures like the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). A separate section addressing the regional issues surrounding Indian, Chinese, Pakistani, and Russian strategic viewpoints adds to the overall perspective.
The title's third interpretation, as in when you "engage" or take on someone you realize that nothing more than an introductory hand-shake has been accomplished has been highlighted successfully in these essays. Yes, both India and US seem to have begun a new era of negotiations-but that's all it is-just a beginning. Given their diplomatic past, there is no saying what the outcome would be; unless both parties are equally prudent, diplomatically amenable, and less dictatorial about the terms and conditions of an alliance, this new "era" can easily die an early death.
The title's fourth interpretation-as in an "engagement" prior to a marriage-is discussed in detail in the earlier sections of the book. A closer look at the US and India reveals them as not unlike a human couple. Like their human counterparts, they have many things in common-both are powerful, democratic, practice freedom of speech, participate in relatively free international trade, and boast a free market. Their differences are equally stark-neither will compromise when it comes to strategically protecting its boundaries from any perceived threats, even when the other finds its reasoning far-fetched. For instance, the CTBT died an early death because the US could not bring itself to ratify it; similarly, India consistently maintains that when it comes to weaponization and non-proliferation, "what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander." Their psychological similarity has often been dubbed the "mirror-image" effect in the sense that the US finds negotiating with India so difficult because India is its mirror-image on the negotiating table. Their similar strategic goals redoubles the need for healthy diplomatic ties between them since diplomacy can be reasonably thought of as the primary vehicle with which two countries communicate, or in this case, arbitrate away their differences. Let's just hope that this "engagement" ends in holy matrimony and not a premature divorce.
All in all, I found the essays in this collection to be lucid and informative; they were all written in a captivating style that assumed little or no background, yet the essays managed to take the reader in to the depths of their ideas without getting too bogged down by technical jargon. The book provides an excellent summarization of the main issues surrounding Indo-US Strategic Relations although an essay that covered their industrial and economic aspects could have made it stronger, especially since a sound strategic alliance is often considered a necessary prelude to a sound economic relationship. For instance, India's booming software industry and the way its huge middle-class of 250 million is being tapped by the American high-tech industries not just as a cheap labor pool but also as a massive consumer group are certainly some other reasons that determine Indo-US relations. An essay that examined how India's trade and other economic interactions with the US has changed over the years and how it influences its current relation would have been quite welcome. I hope their subsequent volumes will elaborate further on the ideas mentioned since a book comprising mere 280 pages cannot be expected to do justice to the complexities inherent in a topic as vast as this. A good starting book for a beginner that also delves deep and makes viable recommendations to the policy makers of both the countries.

Not enough shades of grey covered
By Raj Patel
The book is overly optimistic but, nevertheless, remains an informative reference source.
The book should have spent more time on explaining the strategic interplay between India, Russia, China and the US. By doing so, the book would have better captured the geopolitical complexities and realpolitik.
Had the book achieved this, the reader would have rightly concluded that India is not going to fall into the trap of going with one or either side. Moreover the book would have concluded that India's strategic partnership with Russia and China's strategic partnership with Russia effectively have created a triangular strategic relationship, created with the objective of mitigating 4th party external interference, both regionally and globally.
Had the book also mentioned that India's tech-based economic relationship with the US ties the world's two largest democracies economies together, the reader would have concluded the only CERTAIN conclusion: "The days of the the superpower, acting without recourse to international law, are effectively over. The 21st century will be one of multipolarity and economic interdependence. Unilateral and illegal attacks on sovereignty e.g. Serbia, will soon be a thing of the past."
The book will sit well on the bookshelves of interested parties, but it must be read with a dose of skepticism. The picture it paints is slightly rose-tinted.

Provides some hope for an improvement in relations
By A Customer
This book was presented by US secretary of state, Madelaine Albright, to the Indian foreign minister, Jaswant Singh, on their recent meeting.
The US and India have, for too long, been suspicious of eachother. Now that the Cold War is over, both have to re-assess the evolving geopolitics. Pakistan's strategic importance to the US is withering, and Russia no longer fulfills its role of bi-polarity. India has a middle-class of 250 million, and the US should seek to capture this market.
India has a nuclear capability but this poses and intends to pose no threat to the US. Rather, her nuclear status exists solely for regional insulation.
The prospects for a mutually beneficial strategic and economic relationship between India and the US are there.
This book analyses the gains for both sides through engagement, and is written from a positive, but nevertheless, realistic perspective.
Let us see what develops, and let us hope that it is good for both sides.

Dividing Classes: How the Middle Class Negotiates and Rationalizes School Advantage, by Ellen Brantlinger

In this study of the school system of an Indiana town, Ellen Brantlinger studies educational expectations within segments of the middle class that have fairly high levels of attainment. Building on her findings, she examines the relationship between class structure and educational success. This book asserts the need to look beyond poor peoples' values and aspirations--and rather to consider the values of dominant groups--to explain class stratification and educational outcomes.

Review
""Dividing Classes forces us to confront perhaps the most troubling and least studied challenge to equitable schooling: Middle-class Americans' presumption that their own superiority accounts for their school success and the life chances that successful schooling brings. In her penetrating account of affluent, mostly liberal, mothers and education professionals, Brantlinger shows how powerfully the ideology of meritocracy undercuts the educational opportunities of low-income young people. Most important she illuminates how this undercutting works through the seemingly innocent, day-to-day talk and actions of middle-class Americans that consistently advantage society's already-advantaged young people."
-Jeannie Oakes, Presidential Professor of Educational Equity, UCLA
"Describes how members of the educated middle class act to secure the best of what schools have to offer for their own children and how they rationalize their actions."
-Journal of Economic Literature

Thought-Provoking but Frustrating
By CrimsonGirl
Dr. Ellen Brantlinger has done a fascinating case study on the impact of social class on mothers' and teachers' perceptions of government-run education in an economically diverse small Midwestern city (presumably the author's hometown of Bloomington, IN). The book really made me examine how social class has influenced my own beliefs about education.

However, I was extremely frustrated by Dr. Brantlinger's assumptions about the underlying reasons behind her subjects' responses. She kept attributing very negative motivations to the upper-middle-class moms without providing any convincing evidence to back up her accusations. Dr. Brantlinger reads classism and a desire to continue social inequality into everything the wealthier moms say, in a way very reminiscent of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson when it comes to racism.

Thought provoking book
By Amazon Customer
This book is interesting because of the author's choice to focus on the middle class. Despite the fact that you may disagree with this approach (as i did in the beginning) it pushes one to think about the class positionality of the middle class and one's self as well. I would especially read this book if you are in the middle class and have children who will be or are in school now.

by trying to do good for all kids in the classroom you inevitably hurt ...
By Frank
I give one star because its important to register this book in the negative as it pertains to the aggregate scoring. The book is an interesting read about the socioeconomic makeup of a district with the challenge of educating very different demographics and expectations of public education. Unfortunately, the author has a Liberal political viewpoint and it makes it difficult to fully engage in the book. I found this book because my daughters are currently in a mixed socioeconomic school district and have had the challenges and struggles that this diversity brings. The disruption my children feel during the course of the day is real and is mostly caused by children from poorer economic backgrounds. My focus is on my children and their educational success, with much sympathy for those low income children unable to contain themselves. Unfortunately, by trying to do good for all kids in the classroom you inevitably hurt your own high achieving kids. You have to listen to teachers, they have the first hand experience of what is going on in the classroom. Discounting these experiences as prejudiced is a cop out. What disappointed me the most about this book was how teachers who had a negative views about forced desegregation/tracking tactics and lower socioeconomic schools were labeled prejudiced when they offered their anecdotes and experiences with it. However, when the progressive teacher offered the wonders of mixed classes, of no tracking and the inevitable low expectations of the learning experience these anecdotes were treated with praise. The important point is both viewpoints were personal opinions and teacher experience and yet the Liberal point of view is viewed as the only valid one. There are no facts behind any of this social engineering in these schools. The big hurdle is somehow improving the parenting in these low income households, most of the children now entering public school are in poverty. These problems will only get worse, my fear is that the public education will be the bastion of lower economic children especially as you literally drive out the middle class and cater to the underclass.
