Music and Traditions of the Arabian Peninsula: Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar, by Lisa Urkevich

Music and Traditions of the Arabian Peninsula provides a pioneering overview of folk and traditional urban music, along with dance and rituals, of Saudi Arabia and the Upper Gulf States of Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar. The nineteen chapters introduce variegated regions and subcultures and their rich and dynamic musical arts, many of which heretofore have been unknown beyond local communities. The book contains insightful descriptions of genres, instruments, poetry, and performance practices of the desert heartland (Najd), the Arabian/Persian Gulf shores, the great western cities including Makkah and Medinah, the southwestern mountains, and the hot Red Sea coast. Musical customs of distinctive groups such as Bedouin, seafarers, and regional women are explored. The book is packaged with an audio CD and almost 200 images including a full color photo essay, numerous music transcriptions, a glossary with over 400 specialized terms, and original Arabic script alongside key words to assist with further research. This book provides a much-needed introduction and organizational structure for the diverse and complex musical arts of the region.

Review
Music and Traditions of the Arabian Peninsula

'The rich and varied music and folk-dance traditions of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar are little known outside the eastern peninsular region itself. This pioneering and detailed guidebook to those arts is appropriate for both general readers and specialists. It covers the song and dance traditions of Bedouin tribes and villagers, the sophisticated music of the cities, and the songs of seafarers and pearl divers. Included are several accounts of women’s wedding traditions, as well as a cd with 31 excellent audio examples... For anyone seekinga greater understanding of the traditional folk arts of the Arabian Peninsula, including those performed annually at the Saudi Janadriyah festival, this will also be a useful guide.' ―KAY HARDY CAMPBELL, Aramco World Magazine

'The Arabian Peninsula is complex and has always been so. This fine volume by Lisa Urkevich opens more doors to understanding the region than you might expect...Urkevich's writing is lucid and informative, [and] visually laid out better than most; it offers guideposts but lets the reader dive into any chapter without the need for reading earlier chapters...I highly recommend Music and Traditions of the Arabian Peninsula.' - Richard Dorsett, RootsWorld

Encyclopedic Perspectives Expand Appreciation
By Dr. Debra Jan Bibel
Comprehensive and detailed, this ethnomusicological reference book offers much even for the general reader. The various regions and states of the Arabian peninsula, including Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar--but not Yemen, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates, which differ considerably in musical and cultural aspects--are the focus. Besides the context and history of the many musical forms and dances, the book presents lyrics in English and in Arabic, melodic and rhythmic scores, descriptive choreography of the dances, costumes, numerous photographs, maps, biosketches of leading musicians (men and women) of the Hijaz, and information on the instruments, which are chiefly drums. Indeed, most of the styles have groups of men in facing lines, playing frame or double-headed drums and clapping, dancing in synch by vigorous leg movements, with soloists handling sticks, swords, daggars, or rifles in mock combat. Yet there is also art music, where ud, violin, and qanun is played, and maritime work songs that include lyre and bell percussion. The Peninsula has its "bible belt", where conservative clerics decry all forms of music as distractions to piety; but the holy city of Mecca [Makkah] is a music center because of its cosmopolitan history. Music throughout the world has been regarded as a lowly profession, and in the Peninsula, musicians are often of African slave heritage; women were especially involved in music, particularly before Islam. Folk traditions of the Bedouin are contrasted with urban peoples, laborer and elite, and also the famous pearl divers in the Persian Gulf. Weddings, Eid celebrations, rituals, and other events are excuses for music and the book provides examples in rich detail. Also included are an extensive glossary of terms in Arabic and transliterated English and a useful index. Moreover, a CD with 31 .mp3 musical examples accompanies the book. Author Lisa Urkevich, who is a professor at the American University of Kuwait, offers students and armchair travelers a remarkable book that expands our Western appreciation of this poorly known region. Far from a monolithic culture, people of the mountains, deserts, and coasts, east along the Persian Gulf and west along the Red Sea, have distinct traditions, and the variety of their music and dances becomes evident with study and listening. Very few musical recordings from these regions are available, except for Yemen, and this book and CD will certainly be valued.

At last a book on Arabian music.
By Ike
Arabian music is a much neglected field. This book goes a long way to fill the void. It offers coverage of virtually all regions of the peninsula and even includes a CD. Five stars.
