Used in his course

I just completed the course that Professor Krome designed around this recently published volume of out-of-print science fiction war stories. The work is an excellent look into style of literature that is not well known in our day, but gives an interesting glance into the birth of science fiction. The selections range from shorter(a few pages)to longer(30 or more) and are a wide variety of writing styles, some better than others. Dr. Krome, of the University of Cincinnati, ties them all together with insightful introductions and chapter narratives. I would recommend this to any science fiction fan who would like to learn about and read the early works in this genre. The college text nature of the volume does make it rather pricey.

An Anthology that might as well be an Encyclopedia. Brilliant!

Krome's book is a treasure, especially for those sci-fi fans (re: most) who have gaps in their learning. For me, I know quite a bit about Science Fiction warfare (Heinlein, Haldeman) and plenty about cyber dystopia (Gibson), and I even knew something about 19th century early prognosticators (Verne), but this book fills in all kinds of gaps for those who want to know the fears and dreams of writers from a bygone era.
It's easy to laugh at this remove at the idea of an airborne "yellow Han menace" or purchasing aerial bombardment insurance against roving heavier-than-air Teutonic dirigibles, but these were once very real existential issues for Americans.
The stories consist primarily of war / annihilation-themed fiction written between the start of the First World War and the end of the Second. These tales are interleaved with images from the magazines where these stories originally appeared, and Krome's indispensable introductions and commentaries explaining the issues of the day that informed the stories.
Krome is a historian first and foremost, and he puts everything into its proper context, dividing the book into several, well-organized sections. I know I'm not alone among SF aficionado / autodidacts in saying there are huge gaps in my knowledge of the field, particularly its earlier years. Before reading this book I knew only the broad outlines, the names of Hugo Gernsback /A. E. Van Vogt. After reading this, I now know much, much more.
Besides that it is a fun read.
