Dry, Could Use Better Editing (if the legalities allowed)
By Gary Kruckeberg
Fifteen academic studies of (typically) Millennial sects and how they react when the predictions/prophecies don't pan out as expected. The "classic" study they all seem to be reacting to is the one by Festinger, Riecken, and Schachter in 1956. Because these are separate readings there is a lot of covering the same ground (over and over and over again) in pursuit of making each reading's own points and corrections/additions to Festinger, et al.. These are academic writings so they are fairly dry. A much more coherent, shorter, readable, and enjoyable book could be made (assuming the legalities could be handled) by summarizing these studies and putting them in a framework starting with the Festinger, et al. study and then adding each study's nuances. This is not a book for the mildly interested non-academic reader, rather one for someone who wants references to source material on the topic.

A superb collection of readings about how new religious movements predict TEOTWAWKI (The end of the world as we know it) and how they recover from the inevitable failed prophecy.

From Publishers Weekly
In this entertaining and thoughtful meditation on the nature of work in human life, Gini (a Loyola University philosophy professor) careers between the philosophical (quoting Pope John Paul II and Pope Pius XII as well as G.K. Chesterton) and the practical (ruminating on social philosopher Jeremy Rifkin's contention that computersAthe "third industrial revolution"Awill mean the end of work in the future). At the heart of his book is the complex relationship between human behavior, social organization and the need to practice meaningful work. In a sprightly chronology, he traces attitudes toward work throughout Western historyAfrom the Greeks, who looked down on physical labor as antithetical to philosophy, to the Protestant work ethic invented by Luther and Calvin, to the 18th-century Luddites who destroyed machines in protest against losing their jobs, and the robber barons who quoted scripture to justify inhumanely long work hoursAbefore deftly turning to contemporary U.S. attitudes. Drawing upon such diverse sources as labor statistics about women in the workplace, publications of Workaholics Anonymous, nationwide polls about job satisfaction and the writings of William James, Gini paints a nuanced and scholarly portrait of Americans' response to the place of work in their lives, acknowledging that as the nature and meaning of work changes, people still need "a vision that recognizes and honors the precept that, minimally, work must do two thingsAmaintain life and add to it." Review
"[An] entertaining and thoughtful meditation on the nature of work in human life".

-- Publishers Weekly

From the Back Cover
Why do we work? And why do we work so obsessively? Al Gini observes that work rules, runs, and sometimes ruins our lives. But what is intriguing is that in spite of this, many of us come to love, or at least need, that which holds us captive. In this provocative, lively, and sometimes disturbing meditation, Gini reveals that work is not only a fundamental aspect of our humanity, but also a profound reflection of our deepest selves. Peppered with real voices from workers and employers across America, and with references from psychology, history, popular literature and economics, My Job, My Self speaks to every employed person who has yet to understand the costs and challenges of a lifetime of labor.

Thorough, Data-Filled, Academic Treatment of Modern Work
By Amazon Customer
After finishing this book, all I can say is "wow." Mr. Gini is clearly one of the more knowledgeable people on the subject of work and its changing role in modern society. This book is masterfully well written and demonstrates a sound knowledge of the subject matter, which is presented in a very well thought out and logically presented manner. The scope of the subject matter being very broad, the author's ability to envelope it and treat so many aspects of it in such depth was really remarkable. There is an amazing amount of information presented within the book, a plethora of footnotes, and yet the book is not imposing - it is in fact rewarding because of all it.
While the entire book was fascinating, I thought that there were four chapters in particular that were outstanding. Chapter 7 "Women in the Workplace", Chapter 8 "Squeezing Time", Chapter 10 "Work Spend and Debt Syndrome", and Chapter 12 "The End of Work, is Rifkin Right?" all cover enough detail to be books of their own, Mr. Gini references many other books which do just that. "Women in the Workplace" explores the many remarkable facets of how the increasing penetration of women into the workforce has changed our society, and how society has driven those changes. "Squeezing Time" talks of the incredible shrinking of free time in modern society compared to those of years gone by. The author sees this as a natural extension of the Industrial Revolution, and has the data to back up this view. "Work Spend and Debt Syndrome" talks about the shift in society to one of people with lives to one of people as consumers. The similarities between this and "Bobos in Paradise" by Brooks is startling. Mr. Gini demonstrates qualitatively and quantitatively how we have become a consumer society, and shows us what exactly that means. "The End of Work, is Rifkin Right?" is an amazing chapter (partly because I agree with his points very strongly) in which the author looks at the some of the questions posed by Mr. Jeremy Rifkin and Mr. Robert Heilbroner in their 1996 book. Their main point had been that the increase in productivity caused by the personal computer had yet to fully ripple through the workplace, and that as it did so we would see waves of greater and greater unemployment. Mr. Gini takes a look at this view four years later, and is cautious to not deliver an aggressive verdict.
One of the more interesting things I found about this book, other than the points that the author brought forth and the views of society that he projected, was that it almost had a self-help aspect to it. There is an amazing amount of comfort behind statistics in which "85% of all workers felt __", especially when the blank is filled in with something you feel as well. In that manner, there were parts of this book that evoked similar themes to "A Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor Frankl, something that completely surprised me. This is by no means a central tenement to the text, but its effect was certainly worth noting, and really added strongly to the value of the book.
I couldn't recommend this book anymore strongly. It would be of great value to anyone who is working, trying to figure out what they should be doing with their lives, or is looking to do research on the changing role of work within society. This is an outstanding book.

Sum, ergo laboro ("I am, therefore I [must] work")
By Christopher Nelson
For most of us work as a means to an end (namely, consumerism) has displaced the notion of work as a pleasure. Etymologically, the words "work", "job", or "labor" denote pain, sorrow, or heavy, burdensome tasks. Thus, in "My Job, My Self" Al Gini wonders: "So why, given our poverty of time and the burdens of work, haven't we traded our prosperity for leisure?" (p. 141). One answer provided by Gini in this thorough expose on everything "job/work", is that most of us no longer work out of a sense of duty, necessity, or utilitarian pleasure; nor hunger or the satisfactions of craftsmanship or pleasures of a job well done. Sadly, we no longer seem capable of knowing what exactly to do with our free-time, and find ourselves more often than naught, bored, wanting, and desiring things only more money can buy. We have become a nation of culture consumers: "Emo, ergo sum"/"I shop, therefore I am", (p. 140).

The main thrust of "My Job, My Self" is not to propose some vague utopian elimination of work altogether, but rather to acknowledge the importance that modern society places on work, and to show how we have come to identify ourselves through our jobs. If our jobs are so vital to who we are, then we really ought to pay more attention to what exactly we're getting out of them. Gini admits that, "Work will never be completely free of disappointment, drudgery, and toil, but all work should, at least, offer the possibility of purpose and hope" (p.224).

"My Job, My Self" is an enlightening journey through a subject many readers read books to escape from in the first place! Yet, our jobs consume so much of our time and lives that only a straight-forward examination of what we do, and why we do it, can be therapeutic - and quite possibly life-changing. "My Job, My Self" is rounded off with insightful chapters on subjects such as race, women in the workplace, time and stress issues related to workaholism, and the importance of ethics and leadership. In general, it contains sound socio-economic discussion related to the nature of work itself, and the worker's relation to it in an increasingly technologically driven economy. Read, reflect, and arm yourself with your new-found revelations, for "without love, work is servitude" (p.224).

Understanding the origins of work inner dimension...
By Paterni Riccardo
Why do we work? What we do expect from work? What do we get from work? Is the nature of work changing along with the economic and social changes affecting all of us? The topic is relevant to anyone and the perspective taken by Al Gini (member of the Department of Philosophy and the Institute of Human Resources and Industrial Relations at Loyola University Chicago) is at the same time academic and wide ranging for the general reader referencing from subjects such as psychology, history, popular literature and economics. This book stimulates the reader to reflect upon the `way that we make a living' while gaining a sense of perspective and insight upon what we really value about our own work. The exercise is at the same time challenging and enlightening and it helps us also to find ways that could improve the way we experience and perceive work itself.

From necessity to self-realization: identity

First of all, why do we work? OK, the first answer is a given: `we work to make a living'. But there is much more than that and too often we fail to consider and value it. Gini puts it quite clearly: "Renè Descartes was wrong. It isn't `Cogito ergo sum' (I think, therefore I am), but rather `Labora, ergo sum' (I work therefore, I am). We need work, and as adults we find identity in and are identified by the work we do. Our work tells us who we are. If this is true, then we must be careful about what we choose to do for a living, for what we do is what we become. At its worst, work is a burden and a necessity. At its best work can be an act of personal freedom and self-realization. But either way, work is a necessary and defining ingredient in our lives". From both a psychological and social perspective the sense of identity that we get from work is a powerful one; it does shape who we are and the way we are perceived by others, yet most of all, the `rules' of our work do have a powerful impact on the way we understand and give meaning to events shaping our lives and the lives of others.

Beyond the survival game?

Do we work to survive or can we also gain satisfaction from work aiming at that self-realization that deep inside we all strive for? Since the Industrial Revolution the progressive spreading of material well-being (at least within the Western civilization) should have enabled workers to go beyond the threshold of `work as survival' into a dimension of work more linked to real achievement, expression of talent and inner potential. Gini writes "Unfortunately, both conventional wisdom and sociological surveys tell us that a significant portion of the workforce feels trapped in jobs that lack the possibility of `real achievement', `feelings of satisfaction' and the opportunity for the development of a `healthy and stable sense of self'. For these individuals work remains an obstacle to endure instead of an opportunity to expend one's life. Clearly, the only satisfaction to be found in some jobs lies in the necessity of getting it done when no other alternatives are available. Survival, not satisfaction, becomes the goal. (...) More and more workers feel that their jobs lack any meaning and value beyond the utilitarian function of providing them with a paycheck." Since ancient times work has been associated with a burden, a necessary unavoidable toil (on the topic Gini points out several references from ancient Greek and Roman cultural tradition and also the Bible); with time, no matter what kind of material improvements society has created overall, we have been unable to tap into the richer inner individual dimension of work and this has created serious individual and social consequences "Too many workers believe their jobs have nothing to do with their inner sense of self, at least not in a positive sense. Too often, they're right. Too often, frustration at work finds expression in addiction, depression, withdrawal or violence".

Safety of the body; what about safety of the mind?

Since the Industrial Revolution there is been a lot of progress within the workplace of factories and offices in terms of physical work conditions. Physically healthier and safer work environments have progressively become widespread at least within the Western world. Yet this does not seem to have proportionally contributed to increase the overall positive perception of work. As Gini puts it "Although the modern workplace goes to great lengths to protect workers' bodies, little or no attention is paid to the potential damage to their psyches and spirits". The key issue here is once again associated with the sense of meaning, the sense of vision that we stimulated to associate to our work and too often this stimulation is too little or totally not present within organizations and work environments. Gini labels this issue as `lack of vision'; first of all lack of vision on the side of organizational leadership whom fails either to develop, articulate or communicate effectively a sense of project, of contribution to a larger goal, to which workers at any level of the organization can relate to. Once again the consequences of this are widespread and have a deep impact on an individual and societal level "Because so few of us feel we are part of a larger purpose, we lose ourselves in the pay-off, the paycheck, and are driven solely by the goal of pecuniary well-being. The primary meaning of our labor is reduced to what it allows us to get or buy. We no longer work to create or contribute but only to consume". Human nature leads us to strive for meaning, to strive for achievement and since we cannot find neither meaning nor achievement within the daily nature of our work, we associate meaning and achievement not to what we create but to what we consume. Gini argues that this affects also the sources of our motivation to work and produce "The desire for goods and services, aided and abetted by advertisement and the installment plan, is the `new candided carrot', to use Bell's phrase, that keeps us at our jobs and motivates our work efforts. The new American worker has been formed not by discipline, ideology, or need by by boredom, want and desire". Once again these dynamics might contribute to ensure safety and well-being of the body, the latest and trendiest goods and services do satisfy - at least for a given amount of time - our external needs and wants; yet our internal drives for real contribution and achievement are too often pushed aside with the undesirable consequences above mentioned. Today's way to work takes care of our body and little of our mind; over two hundred years of growing material progress has done very little to change this.

Tapping into the inner dimension of work: values and moral leadership

Failing to take into consideration and develop the individual inner dimension of work is detrimental of the individual; nowadays it is detrimental also for organizations that have the necessity to tap into the inner individual creativity and talents in order to innovate and be competitive within a very dynamic and demanding global economy. Work with a real meaning, clearly part of a real contribution to a greater purpose is for more and more organizations no longer simply an unnecessary benefit granted to workers, it has become a requirement of effective management and leadership. Yet too often companies still fail to understand this and they miss the opportunity to truly evolve the dimension of work on both an individual and organizational level. Work has always been in search of meaning and increasingly organizations are in search of meaning in order to establish a strong sense of identity and purpose necessary to make their contribution to a fast changing economy truly recognized as unique and valuable. Meaning needs to be rooted in a real greater purpose to which we aim, as individuals and workers, on the basis of shared values and behaviors that need to be stated, articulated and respected. Meaning given by a set of principles that not only give a real greater purpose to work, they define its moral dignity. Within these dynamics leadership has a key role in coming to redefine and reshape the way we perceive and experience work. Gini writes "I believe that Tom Peters and Bob Waterman were correct when they stated `The real role of leadership is to manage the values of an organization'. All leadership is value-laden. All leadership is ideologically driven or motivated a by certain philosophical perspective, which upon analysis may prove to be morally acceptable. (...) Leadership is hard to define, and moral leadership is even harder. Nevertheless, I am convinced that without the `witness' of moral leadership, standards of ethics and organizational life will not occur or be sustained. Leadership, even when defined as a collaborative experience, is this about the influence of individual character and the impact on personal mentoring. Good behavior does not always beget good behavior, but it does establish tone and offer options. Although it is mandatory that an organization as a whole make a commitment to ethical behavior to actually achieve it, the model for that commitment has to originate from the top. Or, am I wrong? Is it always about the money?" Once again, what is going to prevail about work? Its superficial material focus, based upon the outer dimension or the deep rooted meaning-laden real-contribution-driven based on the inner dimension?

Global societal, technological and economic changes give us the opportunity (an opportunity increasingly shaping itself as a necessity) and the means to finally have an impact upon the nature of work, the way that we identify with it, they way that we consider it not simply as a mean to survival but as a mean to self-realization. Time will tell if us and our leaders have the vision and the courage to embrace this opportunity.

Serving Military Families in the 21st Century (Textbooks in Family Studies), by Karen Rose Blaisure, Tara Saathoff-Wells, Angela Pereira,

This text introduces readers to military families, their resilience, and the challenges of military life. Personal stories from active duty, National Guard, reservists, veterans, and their families, from all branches and ranks of the military, and those who work with military personnel, bring their experiences to life. A review of the latest research, theories, policies, and programs better prepares readers for working with military families. Objectives, key terms, tables, figures, summaries, and exercises, including web based exercises, serve as a chapter review. The book concludes with a glossary of key terms.

Engaging vignettes are featured throughout:

· Voices from the Frontline offer personal accounts of issues faced by actual program leaders, practitioners, researchers, policy makers, service members, and their families.

· Spotlight on Research highlights the latest studies on dealing with combat related issues.

· Best Practices review the optimal strategies used in the field.

· Tips from the Frontline offer suggestions from experienced personnel.

The book opens with an introduction to military culture and family life. Joining the military and why people do so are explored in chapter 2. Next, life in the military including relocation, employment, education, and deployment are examined. Daily lives of children in military families are explored in chapter 4. How stress and resilience theories are used in working with military families are then reviewed. Chapter 6 focuses on milestones experienced by service members and programs that support them through these transitions. Everyday issues caused by the trauma of war are reviewed in Chapters 7 and 8. Programs, policies, and organizations that serve military families in dealing with deployment, education, and health and child care are explored in chapters 9 and 10 followed by initiatives supporting reintegration and reunification issues. Next, how to work with families and those who have experienced traumatic events is considered. The book concludes with a review of career opportunities and stories from working professionals.

Intended as a text for advanced undergraduate or graduate courses on military families or as a supplement for courses on the family, marriage and family, stress and coping, or family systems taught in family studies, human development, clinical or counseling psychology, sociology, social work, and nursing, this book also appeals to helping professionals who work with military families.

Review

"As a former military service member, I can say that this is the first book I have discovered that conveys a true-to-life picture of living the military lifestyle from the perspective of the active duty member, family member, and veteran. Practitioners, researchers and students will derive enormous benefit from the authors’ expertise and insight concerning this unique and dedicated group of men and women." - PsycCRITIQUES

“Our military and their families deserve informed support practices and this volume is the resource for those efforts.  The authors have expertly crafted the most engaging and comprehensive collection of “usable” information on military families ever created. This is an essential read for every course on human services and family studies and for every human services provider.”- Francesca Adler-Baeder, Auburn University, USA

“This book fills an important educational gap and will help students and others gain the understanding they need to be sensitive to the needs of the military families they will encounter in their future work.” -  Joyce Wessel Raezer, National Military Family Association, USA

“…A must-have primer for anyone  working with military service members and families. Gaining fluency in military culture and context is an essential first step in being able to effectively serve those who continue to serve us.”  - Angela J. Huebner, Virginia Tech, USA

“Without compromise to academic standards the authors succeed at narrating applicable knowledge that will benefit professionals, practitioners and partners of military service personnel as well as soldiers themselves. The book is a good read!” - Rene Moelker, Netherlands Defense Academy, The Netherlands

“This innovative and practical book offers a wide range of topics on military families and is ideal for students and practitioners.  This crucial textbook should be on the desk of every military family therapist!”  - James G. Daley, Indiana University School of Social Work, USA

Lots of informaton
By Rockin Mama
Got this book for the Military Psychology class I am taking. The book is crammed full of details and facts and insight into the minds and emotional health of our Service Members. The end of each chapter has questions to test your knowledge and make you think. Some involve websites or links to videos that are not longer available, so that can be problematic, But overall, a very informative book.

Outstanding book on the basics of military life and the effects military service has on the family members. There is a lot of research on the effects of service, specifically in combat, on the member but very little on the family members. Book was used in the class Military Families tought at TAMU-Central Texas and is a great read for those looking to enter the social work or behaviorial health care field where they could be counseling military members or their families.

Glamorizes the military
By vanessa l.
I was in the military for 4 years and my husband has been in for 8 years both on active duty. This book is garbage. The authors do everything they can to provide free PR for the military. Much of what is said isn't even true.

Today, new media is both augmenting and extending the traditional classroom with a variety of technology-based tools available to both students and faculty, and has created "new" virtual classrooms for anywhere, anytime availability to education. Despite the enormous potential for technology to support the educational enterprise in this emerging "creative" economy, technologies are still not yet fully integrated in the classroom and their association with educational outcomes is as-yet unclear. This book profiles scholarly work from around the world to examine closely the effectiveness of the newest media in education at bridging the gaps among and between teachers, students and subject matter at all levels, from K-12 through adult education. These pieces are theory-based investigations with implications for future research, theory and application. Contributors examine how the fields of education and new media have evolved and are continuing to evolve pedagogically and practically, from predominantly instructivist, with a passive, one-way teaching format; to constructivist, including teacher- and learner-controlled, sensorially immersive and socially interactive exchanges. This book will be of interest to students and faculty in the areas of new media in education, including distance learning, online learning and "virtual" learning.

From Library Journal
Over 20 years ago, Lyotard defined the postmodern condition: "The postmodern would be that which, in the modern, puts forward the unpresentable in presentation itself." Lyotard's definition engages both the political (how can we explain modern states that participate in terrorism, that is, the unpresentable?) and the aesthetic (what images can we use to present the unpresentable?). In this collection of essays, 14 philosophers offer a tribute to and a fresh engagement with the philosophy of Lyotard, who died in 1998. Six of the essays examine Lyotard's hermeneutics in conversation with partners ranging from Mikhail Bakhtin, Hans Georg Gadamer, and Emmanuel Levinas to Jean-Luc Nancy and Manfred Frank. Four essays explore the tangled relationship among unpresentability, otherness, and moral and political responsibility. The final four essays focus on Lyotard's rethinking of Kant's distinction between the beautiful and the sublime as Lyotard fashions a postmodern sublime that presents the unpresentable in presentation itself. Editor Silverman (Textualities) includes a previously unpublished essay by Lyotard on Freud's case study of Emma that contains the core of much of Lyotard's philosophy. In this essay, he investigates the "moments between" two juxtaposed positions (or differends, as Lyotard called them) that are incomprehensible to each other. The volume also contains a thorough bibliography and some never-before-seen photographs of Lyotard. Overall, the essays provide a helpful introduction to the development of Lyotard's philosophy, but they require such a level of knowledge about philosophy that the volume is recommended primarily for libraries serving college communities and for academic libraries. No More Secrets: Violence in Lesbian Relationships, by Janice Ristock

Violence is a male biological trait. When women fight, no one gets seriously hurt. Lesbians don't abuse their spouses. The truth revealed in Janice Ristock's groundbreaking book is that lesbian relationships sometimes do turn violent. Based on interviews with more than one hundred lesbians who have suffered abuse and seventy-five case workers, No More Secrets is the first in-depth account of this startling phenomenon. Although one in four gay and lesbian couples are affected by domestic violence, the problem has remained hidden for several reasons. By giving voice to the victims, Ristock helps women to address violence by breaking silences, sharing secrets, and naming the forms of abuse.

From Publishers Weekly
In No More Secrets: Violence in Lesbian Relationships, University of Manitoba women's studies professor Janice Ristock presents one of the first studies of lesbian domestic violence. Basing her work on interviews with victims and social workers, she evaluates firsthand testimony, piecing together how and why lesbian relationships become violent and how the medical and criminal justice systems react when they do. The book concludes with suggestions for battered individuals and for wider community action.

Review
If any message can be taken away from this book it is that lesbian women's experience of violence in all its differing contexts must be reconceptualized outside restrictive frameworks that to date have failed to consider the intersections of racism, classism, sexism, ableism as well as heterosexism. In providing us with the first in-depth critical exploration of the subject matter, Ristock has provided us with a valuable resource for feminists by which future Canadian and international research may be conducted.
–Automne

This study of abuse in lesbian relationships looks you in the eye and dares you to turn away. Far from being a prurient study of a fringe group of violent lesbians, this book demands that the queer community at large--afraid of straight disdain --recognize its accountability. No More Secrets illustrates that despite what many lesbian feminists believe, acts of violence are not committed solely by men. Beautifully sad and unflinching in its insistence on the centrality of its subject to lesbian--and gay--life, this book, penned by an esteemed women's studies associate professor, sheds light on domestic abuse and gives voice to its tragic victims.
–Out Magazine

No More Secrets is the most comprehensive treatment of violence in lesbian relationships to be published to date. Grounded in rich interviews, this book builds on the empirical work that preceded it, but moves us beyond monolithic models to a recognition of the diversity of lesbian relationships and the complexity of lesbian intimate partner violence.
–Claire M. Renzetti, author of Violent Betrayal: Partner Abuse in Lesbian Relationships

Janice Ristock has given us a compelling study of violence within lesbian relationships. She argues compellingly for open discussion of this violence both by those involved and by professionals working with such women. This courageous book will help clients escape the secretly abusive spaces currently occupied by far too many of us trying to live with and love other women.
–Toni A. H. McNaron, author of Voices in the Night: Women Speaking About Incest

This is an important and groundbreaking book, examining the taboo subject of violence in lesbian relationships. It shatters the myth that it is only men that perpetrate violence against their partners, and provides important insights into this particular form of abuse. The thoughtful analysis Janice Ristock presents, based on extensive interviews, lifts the lid on this important subject, answering the question of how violence develops between lesbians, and makes suggestions for prevention or intervention. I highly recommend this book.

More of the same feminist propaganda
By Robert V. Rose, retired education researcher
I read this book quickly because I wanted to learn more about what causes lesbianism. Unfortunately, the author herself is a committed lesbian and feminist. And the book is pretty much the same as others I've read. So there is no discussion at all about the origins of homosexuality. It seems few want to talk about it, thought wikipedia states that a complex combination of inborn and environmental factors is to blame.

I personally think that human secondary sexual characteristics have something to do with it along with human instincts, a subject which currently needs a lot more study.

Revolutionary Memory: Recovering the Poetry of the American Left, by Cary Nelson

Revolutionary Memory is the most important book yet to be published about the vital tradition of leftwing American Poetry. As Cary Nelson shows, it is not only our image of the past but also our sense of the present and future that changes when we recover these revolutionary memories. Making a forceful case for political poetry as poetry, Nelson brings to bear his extraordinary knowledge of American poets, radical movements, and social struggles in order to bring out an undervalued strength in a literature often left at the canon's edge. Focused in part of the red decade of the 1930s, Revolutionary Memory revitalizes biographical criticism for writers on the margin and shows us for the first time how progressive poets fused their work into a powerful chorus of political voices. Richly detailed and beautifully illustrated with period engravings and woodcuts, Revolutionary Memory brings that chorus dramatically to life and set a cultural agenda for future work.

Review
"Cary Nelson's "Revolutionary Memory offers exhaustive scholarship of a genuinely lived kind, as personal interviews and rare artifacts of material poetic culture--texts marked up for performance, poems transcribed onto postcards home, scrapbook entries--reveal the meanings and uses of poetry in people's everyday lives and reflect this book's remarkable level of historical detail."
-"American Literature
"Nelson's book is an important realization of the sort of literary archaeology that he called for in Repression and Recovery. It is particularly valuable in its sustained attention to the poetics, practice, context, influence, and achievement of the Depression generation of Left poets, placing (or replacing) those poets within longer and larger Left traditions."
-James Smethurst, University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Radical Teacher, September, 2002

An Incredible History of the Labor Movement through Its Poetry
By John DeLaurentis
If you ever wondered what the left, and those associated with the American Communist Party, were thinking, this book documents through poetry their suffering, their emotion, and their political passions. Often those who are linked with the left or the communist party are thought of as being aligned with the fascism of Hitler. This is a grave error! Many were involved in the fight against facism. These people were concerned with fair working hours and wages for the working class who were often abused by the steamroller of industrialism. We do not realize that the eight-hour work day we take for granted today was something these people fought for. This book does an excellent job recovering a lost chapter in American history. Nelson writes this history with incredible fluidity and grace. It is filled with many pictures of the poetry documents from his own collection. And despite the political poetry of this period being marginalized and forgotten for decades, it is powerful and moving poetry that serves wider purposes than just its historical context. There is a lot that people of our modern generation could learn and relate with to our current societal struggles. Open your mind and read. You will learn an incredible amount of information about these unsung heroes of our past.

Collective Voice of a Revolution
By Kevin Killian
In part because so many important documents and texts now appear to be lost irretrievably, through careless indifference or malice, Cary Nelson tells us right upfront there that is "no one story to tell" in the history of American poetry of the Left during the first half of the twentieth century, but he insists that there are many stories that might still be told.

Without a single narrative arc, Nelson's book isn't as dramatic a statement as his groundbreaking volume Repression and Recovery: Modern American Poetry and the Politcs of Cultural Memory, 1910-1945. He begins with a sampling of poems, beginning with Markham's once famous "The Man with a Hoe," that (he claims), the New Critical establishment wanted to will away, and from the patchwork assortment he moves on to a striking test case, a poet called Edwin Rolfe and the vicissitudes of his career. I had just about heard of Edwin Rolfe and had no idea of the extent of his involvement in various causes and poetics, but Nelson is not really interested in reviving the reputation of any one forgotten poet. He is more keen rather on presenting Left poetry as a whole, and the third part of his book really had me quarreling in my head with some of his decisions. He suggests that a good way to understand the poetry of the left would be to take various lines from various poems and make your own poem out of it. and he does this on several occasions.

I found the results singularly unconvincing and, of course, "nervy" isn't the word for it. A monkey, no, even one of my cats, could have constructed a stronger poem than the "poetry chorus" Nelson makes out of scraps and lines from a few dozen poets. I think emotionally I believe in what he is saying, but there must be a less self-serving way for him to go about it. (In this light, why, why, why on every page, whenever there's an illustration, must we get the same tag, "From the collection of the author"? Just put it in the front of the book and have done with it. Otherwise you're just asking for burglars to come to our office and take what must surely be the largest collection of left-poetry-ephemera ever publicized in one book.)

Part III dealt with left causes in general and how to make one poem out of them, but Part IV ups the ante by narrowing in on a particular body of work, the poetry of the Spanish Civil War (not all of it by Americans, in this chapter). Nelson is a brilliant scholar and the things he does with language are astounding, and never more so than the way in which, here, like dominoes, one simple flick of his pen causes hundreds of scholarly and popular misconceptions to fall down in sequence... he should be in the Guinness Book of World Records for two reasons.

The Multicultural Riddle: Rethinking National, Ethnic and Religious Identities (Zones of Religion), by Gerd Baumann

Multicultural Riddle is a comprehensive exploration of all the issues that shape our search for a multicultural society. The book examines how we can establish a state of justice and equality between and among three groups: those who believe in a unified national culture, those who trace their culture to their ethnic identity, and those who view their religion as their culture. To solve the multicultural riddle, one must rethink national identity, ethnicity and the role of religion in the modern world.

Fresh thinking and call for action
By V. J.
Baumann's thinking on the very pertinent issue of multicultural riddle, or living out in an increasingly multicultural context in the West, is an excellent resource for the students of social sciences interested to work in this area. In 12 small chapters the author provides brief descriptions of the prevalent theories and then eruditely critiques them. Baumann then introduces his theory which ridicules attempts of reifications of ethnicity, religion, and culture. However, he also argues that people use both reification as well as dialogical process of making and living their identities in a multicultural context. Examples, though very few, complement his theories. Baumann also closes with a passionate plea for intensive empirical research in this area to help develop a multicultural understanding and living in the West. What is lacking in this book, however, is the unwillingness to learn from societies like India which have lived with multicultural and plural communities for centuries.

Baumann boldly rethinks current multicultural theory.
By A Customer
The Multicultural Riddle is a bold rethinking of current multicultural theory. Baumann identifies the three points of the multicultural triangle as national culture, ethnic culture, and religious culture, and calls into question essentialist notions of these three identities. Looking cross-categorically and rethinking reified categories as processes are the goals of Baumann's theory, and he incorporates the means to these goals into his interpretive analyses. The book is a fresh and well-thought response to current multicultural theory, and is definitely a recommended read for those interested in multiculturalism, sociology, politics and governmnet, philosophy, and religion.

Revealing and reassuring
By A. Rowaan
Written especially to broaden the views of researchers in social sciences, this book can give anybody a revealing view on the many cultural identities all of us are reacting from. I got also a much better understanding where racism and xenophobia find their roots. In this time where they let us believe that there is a villain behind each tree, this book is very reassuring.
