Unique insights

Not everyone knows that Foucault analyzed religion with his philosophical mind and kept a regular correspondence with a Jesuit scholar and priest. These are fascinating insights and good to know when writing papers and essays on religion.

A mixed bag

As the English speaking world is lacking the definitive collection of Foucault's numerous occasional writings for journals, newspapers and forwards to books, any addition to the ever-expanding oeuvre of translations is a plus.
Most of the selections here have been published previously in other collections. However, this collection includes some interesting pieces that were previously hard to find. My favorite may be "Who are you, Professor Foucault?" an interview conducted shortly after Les Mots and les choses, in which Foucault dismisses the criticism of anti-humanism by referring to humans as mere functioning species. Classic. Also, the essay, "Is It Useless to Revolt?" is a stunning and conflicting piece of political writing. Beautifully written (and translated). The editor includes a selection of Foucault's final lectures which outlines the intended fourth volume to the History of Sexuality: The Confessions of the Flesh.
In all, these essays provide an interesting contrast between Foucault's aesthetic views and views on spirituality and religion. Indeed, the mystical side of Foucault are highlighted in his essays on Klossowski and modern French fiction when read alongside his writings on the Church and mystical experiences.
Oh, and this collection includes a marvellous brief memoir by James Bernauer. Good stuff...

The work of almost 30 historians, this volume is an update of a 1996 publication. Laura Bush makes a debut appearance, and there are new entries on Abigail Adams, Frances Cleveland, Lou Hoover, Bess Truman, Mamie Eisenhower, Rosalynn Carter, and Nancy Reagan. Other entries have been revised. Coverage is restricted to the 39 women who were married to U.S. presidents during their terms, thus excluding those like Martha Jefferson who died before their husbands took office. Because of this, there are some presidential administrations that are not represented. Entries provide several pages of detailed biographical information followed by a bibliographic essay, each of which has been updated for this edition. Entry length varies from six (Letitia Tyler) to eighteen (Eleanor Roosevelt) pages. Two appendixes follow the text: the Siena College First Lady Polls for 1982 and 1993, and a chronology. RBB

if you like to read fact based stories about movie stars

The book Dorothy Dandrige is a very deep and interesting story about a young woman who stugggles all through movie her career. The book is very well written and is real in depth about her life. I think that the author realy did a good job writting this book, althogh i wish he would have go more indepth about her life before she was a movie star. I recommed this book to anyone who knows what it is like to struggle in life and did what it takes to over come the struggle.

Evolution in International Relations

This work is a selection of essays discussing the idea of a evolutionary paradigm in international relations. The works span the spectrum of thought from those who reject the proposition to those you accept it and believe that it is the answer to the static nature of realist and liberal theory. The debate is wonderful and includes some of the greatest minds in international relations, sociology, and history. A truly interdisciplinary work.

If you are not interested in the idea of this paradigm, it is still a read because of the discussions on the use of the word evolution in modern thought. The word is being used in quite arbitrary ways to describe changes in the world. Attributing observations to evolution when it has nothing to do with it. This is an excellent work, but it is not a light read. This work does not require an exstensive knowledge of international relations so even if you don't know anything, you can pick this work up and understand what the authors are discussing. Highly recommended.
