Review
""Nine Black Women, Moira Ferguson's fascinating and informative documentation of the literary and political activities of nineteenth-century African American, Canadian, Bermudian, and Caribbean women, is a splendid addition to the library of works now recognizing the lives and voices of women of the African diaspora. A combination of biography, personal testimony, and social history, the breadth of this study opens up new perspectives on how we understand that whether they knew, or knew of each other or not, earlier black women have always engaged each other in powerful dialogue across time and space. "Nine Black Women will find great significance and usefulness in a wide array of classrooms as well as in continuing efforts to excavate a complex past that rejects our marginalization and forgetfulness."
-Nellie Y. McKay, University of Wisconsin-Madison
""Nine Black Women is an important anthology that will greatly facilitate our study and teaching of nineteenth-century black women's writing. The selections offer us intimate--and at times poignant--glimpses into the personal lives of nine black women; but they also invite us to examine the political dimensions of the women's more public cultural, religious, and social experiences. Finally, in bringing together texts by black women from different regions in the Americas, the volume gives us a significantly new gendered account of the making of the black Atlantic."
-Carla L. Peterson, University of Maryland, College Park

Facts badly botched on Mary Seacole--check out the sources!
By Dr Lynn McDonald
This book has a chapter on Mary Seacole, most of it quoting and commenting on her interesting memoir, Wonderful Adventures of Mrs Seacole in Many Lands. Unfortunately, the context given is full of errors, as is typical of the current Seacole literature--strong on propaganda, flawed in facts. Here are some of the worst examples.
Ferguson simply asserts, giving no evidence, that Seacole was a “skilled, peripatetic nurse and doctor for the soldiers staying in the boardinghouse who were afflicted with cholera and yellow fever” (68). But there were no soldiers staying at her boarding house (they lived in barracks); her customers were officers. She was neither a nurse nor a doctor; she frequently called herself a “doctress,’ meaning a herbalist, as her mother had been. She also called herself “doctress, nurse and ‘mother’” (p. 124), not really an occupation. Skilled? How do we know? Seacole gave specifics for only one of her remedies, and that included deyhydrating substances for bowel diseases! The effective cure is oral rehydration therapy. She added lead acetate and mercury chloride to her “remedy” and admitted to “lamentable blunders” (p. 31). She claimed a few cures for cholera--not many--but admitted being unable to help on yellow fever (see her Chapter 7). This is not to blame her--it was a terrible epidemic--but why make a fictitious claim?
If Seacole traveled with her brother in North America, as the chapter says, she never mentioned it in her book. Ferguson gave no source. Seacole was certainly never in Canada, the U.S. or Mexico.
The chapter is wrong again that “British administrators rejected her request--presumably for racist reasons” (69). The problem here is that Seacole never submitted the requisite application with references (available at the National Archives, Kew). She only applied informally, by dropping into various offices connected with the army, too late. The plain fact of the matter, frankly acknowledged in her memoir, is that Seacole went to London not to become a nurse, but to see to her gold mining stock (p. 74-5). She was too late even to join the second group.
Ferguson seems not to realize that officers and ordinary soldiers did not socialize together. Seacole’s business was not “a celebrated headquarters among foot soldiers and high-ranking personnel alike,” but a club for officers. Seacole devoted three chapters to describing the delicious food and drinks available, for a price (well beyond soldier’s pay). There was a mere, separate, “canteen for the soldiery.”
Ferguson was way off again in contrasting Seacole’s work with Nightingale’s, crediting Seacole with being “busy on the battlefields and in makeshift hospitals,” when her battlefield visits were exactly three in number (described in her book) and she was never allowed inside a hospital to help, again, read her book! This is not to deny that Seacole kindly helped soldiers and officers on the three occasions at which she was present at a battle--but why exaggerate? and why denigrate the very difficult work Nightingale did, under terrible conditions? Seacole missed the first, awful, winter; conditions were getting much better when she arrived.
Many more errors could be detailed, but let’s finish with the botch-up over the end of the war, which did not end “suddenly” as claimed. The last battle was on 8 September 1855 and the peace treaty was signed on 30 March 1856. Seacole and her partner unfortunately miscalculated--they were making money in the months following hostilities: “my restaurant was always full” (176) said Seacole. Why not simply give an honest, accurate, account of Mrs Seacole, using her excellent book, which is still worth a read?
