The book introduces an entirely new analytical approach to the study of modern state power and the social consequences to the interaction between long-ignored "historical agents" like pirates, smugglers, refugees, and the rural poor. In this respect, the roots of the most fundamental institutions and bureaucratic practices associated with the modern state prove to be the by-products of certain kinds of productive exchange long categorized in negative terms in post-colonial and mainstream scholarship. Such a challenge to conventional methods of historical and social scientific analysis is reinforced by the novel use of the work of Louis Althusser, Talal Asad, William Connolly and Frederick Cooper, whose challenges to scholarly conventions will prove helpful in changing how we understand the origins of our modern world and thus talk about Modernity. This book offers a methodological and historiographic intervention meant to challenge conventional studies of the modern era.

About the Author

Isa Blumi, PhD (2005 NYU), is currently a Fellow at the Centre for Area Studies at Leipzig University. He teaches Balkan, Middle Eastern and world history at Georgia State University. His previous books include Rethinking the Late Ottoman Empire (2003); Chaos in Yemen (2010 with Routledge) and Reinstating the Ottomans (2011).

About the Author

Karen Golden-Biddle is Everett W Lord Distinguished Faculty Scholar and Professor of Organizational Behavior at Boston University School of Management. She currently serves as Senior Associate Dean. Karen received her PhD from Case Western Reserve University. Her research interests focus on large-scale organizational change, cultural dynamics and micro-processes in change, and health system transformation. She also examines the process of theorizing in field-based research.

Jane E. Dutton is the Robert l. Kahn Distinguished University Professor of Business Administration and Psychology at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan. She is currently Associate Director of the Center for Positive Organizational Scholarship. Jane received her Ph.D from Northwestern University. Her research interests focus on organizations and compassion, high quality connections at work, job crafting and the dynamics of positive identities.

Rob Phillips is Associate Professor in the Educational Development Centre at Murdoch University, Australia.

Carmel McNaught is the Director and Chair Professor in the Centre for Learning Enhancement And Research (CLEAR) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Gregor Kennedy is Director of e-Learning and Associate Professor of Educational Technology in the Centre for the Study of Higher Education at The University of Melbourne. His current work involves leading the university's strategy in technology-enhanced learning and teaching, supporting staff in the use of learning technologies, and undertaking research in the area of e-Learning. He has a background in psychology and has spent the past 15 years conducting and overseeing research and development in educational technology in higher education.

I ordered this book back in March and have been so excited for a practical book for us to use as a resource within our school. With that said, I have received two copies. Both copies have arrived without the accompanying CD. So, I am still anxiously awaiting the full package. Only having the book for a little over a day, it seems easy to use and comprehensive in nature. Amazon has been trying very hard to remedy the mistake. I'm hoping all will be fixed by tomorrow afternoon. Then, I will be able to give a full review.

At last!

For too long educators have complained that they do not have the materials to teach courses on women in the Bible, particularly the Old Testament. At long last, Bach has filled the void with a collection that appeals to both educators and the general public. It will be a long time before this volume will outdone.

Good and varied collection

The book is done well and has a lot of food for thought, and is well written and well referenced. I bought it to explore methodologies used and it was useful for that.

My only complaint - which is much broader than this book - is that I fail to see why there is a presumption that a discussion of women's issues usually is expected to be a discussion of sexuality (as if men are not involved in sexuality and it is solely a women's issue). However, since that's how women are usually thought of in a patriarchal framework, especially in a culture and era where the main expectation for women was to reproduce, I suppose it's expected!

Enlightening and Readable

An academic critique of the four Star Trek series, this book has three main sections. The first explores the use of the nautical metaphor in Star Trek. The second considers the many ways in which Star Trek has explored the question of what it means to be human. The third part discusses Deep Space Nine and Voyager as post-modern.
Though that may sound a bit dry, the book is well worth reading, and the authors provide a number of insights into Star Trek. Unlike some critics, the Barretts do not overuse academic jargon, nor do they blindly condemn Star Trek as racist, sexist, colonialist, or fascist. Their approach is more nuanced, and the fact that they seem actually to know something about the show may at least partly explain that. When they label the latter Trek series as postmodern, they explain what they mean by modern and postmodern, and why The Next Generation epitomizes the former and Deep Space Nine and Voyager the latter. Although Deep Space Nine seems profoundly and obviously different from The Next Generation while Voyager often feels like a retread of The Next Generation in many ways, the Barretts find a number of areas (including a greater openness toward religion) that the post-Next Generation series share.
Of particular interest to Trek book fans: the Barretts mention some of the Star Trek novels. Diane Carey's nautical obsession is mentioned in the book's "The Starry Sea" chapter, and Peter David's New Frontier character, Burgoyne 172, is mentioned in a discussion of sexual identity and orientation. Star Trek novels are generally overlooked in examinations of the Star Trek phenomenon, which makes these references a welcome change of pace.
