Excellent Coverage and Clear Explanations - Just Make Sure You Have The Errata Sheet

I don't know if the previous reviewer saw it, but the publisher provides an errata sheet. These are not major errors but that's not an excuse for a careless job. I received my copy a month ago and it included the sheet. If yours doesn't, contact the publisher; I'm sure they'll provide one - and no, I'm not related to the author and I don't work for the publisher.

It's just a very readable and thorough book on a topic too often plagued by opaque books that are torture to read. I think it deserves better than to be dismissed out of hand for relatively minor errors. Just correct them and get on with the learning.

This Book Sucks

This book is terrible for the simple fact that it has been extremely poorly edited. Before we started using it in class, we had to go through and fix 33 errors that the book company has published in a list. 33! Many of them were wrong notes in examples and exercises. Unknown wrong notes in a music theory textbook could cause hours of confusion and be very frustrating. For $75, I do not expect to have to edit the book myself. Unacceptable.

Entertaining

This was a great, in-depth look into the evolution of the United States presidency. The book contains many interesting topics including the relationship between the presidency and the other two branches of the government, plus it contains interesting little known facts about presidents. Overall, the book is good read and isn't convoluted like many other textbooks. I would definitely recommend this books to Political Science students or anyone interested in the presidency.

Kindle Edition is Poorly Formatted

The book itself is great and is a refreshing take on the evolution of the executive branch, avoiding the bore of textbooks. The Kindle Edition in particular is so atrocious however that I felt the need to make a review. Words are misspelled, there are inexplicable spaces in between words or even more annoying, no spaces at all. It's so poorly formatted that it's a distraction trying to read. You're better off getting the physical copy for now.

Women faculty’s participation in academic science and engineering is critical for future US global competitiveness, yet their underrepresentation particularly in senior positions remains a widespread problem. To overcome persistent institutional resistance and barriers to change, the NSF ADVANCE institutional transformation initiative, instituted in 2001, seeks to increase the workforce participation of women faculty in academic science and engineering through systematic institutional transformation. This book assesses the equity, diversity and inclusion outcomes of the changes underway at 19 universities. It provides a comprehensive, stand-alone description of successful approaches to increase the recruitment, advancement and retention of women faculty throughout the academic career pipeline. The findings show that targeted institutional transformation at these 19 U.S. universities has resulted in significant increases in women faculty’s workforce participation, as well as improved gender equity and inclusion. Analyses by discipline show that the greatest changes have occurred within engineering and natural science disciplines at these universities. Yet the results also point to the overall continued underrepresentation of women faculty in academic science and engineering at the nation’s research universities. Mancall (Deadly Medicine: Indians & Alcohol in Early America) and Merrell (Into the American Woods: Negotiators on the Pennsylvania Frontier) have edited a collection of 25 outstanding articles drawn mostly from journals such as Ethnohistory, William & Mary Quarterly, and American Indian Culture and Research Journal. While not interrelated, the articles provide insight into various contact points throughout North America. Articles such as Theda Perdue's "Cherokee Women and the Trial of Tears" and Helen Tanner's "The Glaze in 1792: A Composite Indian Community" are especially noteworthy as they provide insight into aspects of the Native American experience that is often ignored. Highly recommended for public libraries and essential for academic libraries with Native American collections. The 15 essays in the book edited by Vaughan (New England Frontier: Puritans and Indians, 1620-1675) were all originally published in the New England Quarterly. The authors of the original essays were given the opportunity to revise their essays, and some also included postscripts to further enlighten the reader on their subsequent scholarship. While extremely informative, this book is a bit too specialized to be of interest to libraries outside New England unless they support graduate programs. Libraries interested in the Native American experience in New England might also want to examine Dawnland Encounters: Indians and Europeans in Northern New England, edited by Colin G. Peter C. Mancall is Professor of History and Anthropology at the University of Southern California and Director of the USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute. He is the author of several books, including Deadly Medicine: Indians and Alcohol in Early America and Hakluyt’s Promise: An Elizabethan’s Obsession for an English America.

James H. Merrell, the Lucy Maynard Salmon Professor of History at Vassar College, is the author of the Bancroft Prize-winning books The Indians' New World: Catawbas and Their Neighbors From European Contact through the Era of Removal and Into the American Woods: Negotiators on the Pennsylvania Frontier.

A Deeper Understanding

A dispassionate, scholarly look at what happened in North America to its native peoples when the Europeans arrived. The book spans 1500 to 1850, the latter being essentially before the American Civil War. It concentrates on events inside the present day United States. You should be aware that there is little coverage of Mexico and the Canadas. Lest you think this restrictive, remember that we are still referring to a span of 350 years and the US. Given this vast field in time and space, the book does not claim comprehensiveness. What it does have are chapters on numerous aspects of the encounters. Intermarriage, religion, trading, disease and, of course, war and the forced relocation of the few survivors.
There is coverage not just of the eastern seaboard, with the well known incidents at Plymouth and the selling of Manhattan. Also presented are chapters on the Spanish incursions and settlements in the South West. The chapters strive to go beyond the stereotypical, marginal roles played by the natives in standard histories. You can get some understanding of the intricacies of their societies and the range of their dealings with the Europeans. There is, though, a continual frustration; which is not the fault of the authors. The written records we have are overwhelmingly those left by the settlers. We can only wonder now at what was never recorded directly by the natives, and which has been irretrievably forsaken to the nameless dust of history.

Important and Inspiring Book

This well-researched book, while about survivors of the Holocaust and their families, is really a book that informs us about those who survive extreme inhumanity. The message of the book, based on extensive research over 20 years with over 250 individuals, is that it is possible to lead a rich and rewarding life after enduring terror and brutality. Over one third of the survivors they interviewed went on to create family lives in which they and their children flourished. The book is based on in-depth interviewing and innovative data analysis. The researchers used a team approach throughout their decades project. The book reviews the most relevant literature for each topic. I highly recommend this book, which is a great achievement. I feel profoundly grateful to the authors for allowing themselves to be so deeply affected by the survivors' stories and working with them with such heart and integrity.

This is a very engaging book that identifies the strengths that enable trauma survivors to go on to lead
full and meaningful lives. It can be helpful to therapists who treat survivors of various traumas including sexual abuse and physical violence.
It can be helpful to families of survivors as well. This well researched book is based on extensive interviews with Holocaust survivors and their families-
The timeliness of this research and the sensitivity to the survivors has lead to valuable insights and pays tribute to the survivors.

Must Read for Understanding How We Can Survive and Transcend Trauma

Based on 275 in-depth life histories with Holocaust survivors, their children and grandchildren, Transcending Trauma provides a comprehensive understanding and integrated model of coping and adaptation after extreme trauma that can be applied to a broad range of traumas and a diverse group of survivors. The book and accompanying CD of full-text life histories vividly describe how differences among survivor families and how they nurture and socialize children in the formative years helps to explain variations in adult coping and adaptation. The researchers thoroughly explore and describe protective and risk factors leading to resilience and vulnerability. Valuable insights and evidence are provided for the development of mental health interventions and social policies that could not only mitigate the negative effects of these horrific traumatic events, but also help foster more positive, long-term adaptations for all trauma survivors. What I most appreciate about the book and the integrated model it proposes is the holistic, systemic approach that is presented. The model is a most useful and thoughtful addition to current thinking on the intergenerational transmission of extreme trauma.

Good Reference

This book was pretty thorough for documenting health and human rights in several areas of the world, apart from those in the middle east. A gross omission was the case of Iraq. It had an appendix with the declaration of human rights (plus others) for those interested in the "ideal" Otherwise, it was a great introduction into health and human rights.

This book presents a terrific introduction to the role of human rights in public health practice. While quite accessible, some may wish to augment this book with additional readings- perhaps Just Health Care by Normal Daniels?

Electoral Reform

I agree with 85% of his proposals.
I especially like his idea of repealing all electoral reform, abolishing the Federal Election Commission and similar laws, and let candidates for office at the local , state , federal level raise and spend whatever money they want. The only requirement would be the candidates who receive the money (contributions over one thousand dollars in any one year)[my proposal] must indicate who gave them the money, and how much they received during a calander year from each person. Only living people can give money to candidates. No unions , corporate , or foreign nationals contributions permitted. PAC's could support a candidate or an issue, but could receive only donations from living human beings U.S. citizens. That way the voter can decide who is influencing whom and whether they wish to vote for the candidate or not. This will also allow elected officials to concentrate on governing and researching policy options instead of phoning for campaign contributions every week in order to finance their re election campaigns.
Ballot access for third party candidates is important. But ballot access for first time candidates is also important.
The author wanted closed primaries. I disagree. We need open primaries so that independents can vote and chose a nominee. I also want a three ballot election system and eliminate party primaries and the electoral college. This should ensure that whoever wins the office was supported by an actual majority of the voters in the district, city, state, or nation, instead of only a plurality of the voters as is the case with the current voting system used in most states known as the 'first past the post' election method which most states currently use.
The author suggests a Single transferable vote remedy to reduce elections and ensure majory rule, but I am not sure his proposal would achieve what we both desire. Becasue psychology plays a part in human actions in elections, I like my 3 ballot election proposal better. But we should test both the author's ideas and mine to see which is the most efficient and effective method to achieve results. My other idea is to return to having the state legislatures elect U.S. senators , but have them elect one man and one woman per state and give them a 4 year term with a 20 yr. limit as a means of improving the performance of the U.S. Senate. I would also modify the filibuster to mean that whenver a member stops talking about a bill, then a vote could be taken. But they or their collegues would have to continuously talk 24 hours a day to maintain a filibuster. They would eventually tire and we could then vote on the bill or nomination. Also it should require 10% of the Senate to put a hold on any bill or nomination. Only one senator should not possess the power to do that delay. Also , the names of the 10% should be published in the Senate journal with a reason stated for their delay of the bill or nomination.
I urge my fellow citizens to read this book and consider both electoral reform and additional constitutuional reform to eliminate the current political gridlock in Congress between the ultra liberal left who will spend us into bankrupcty and the moral majority right whose main goals are preventing abortion and raising taxes on the rich. Neither party is willing to cut spending to reduce entitlements which we simply cannot afford at any price given the current tax and spending policies both parties have supported for the past 50 years. We must live within our means and / the middle class must pay more in taxes too to finance the existing programs of : medicare, medicaid, and social security as all 3 progroms will go bust in the near term future without radical reductions in spending on them and much higher taxes for the middle class to pay for the benefits their rotten members of Congress voted to give them!
